Re:Context is LOST through degradation, not gainedThanks for your post. It made me realize just how much people are not interested in the actual work, but the sentimental value and charm of old worn things. Thinking of these works in pristine condition as being of greater historical value took me a few moments. Thanks. Hey, no problem! Glad I made someone think of something from a different perspective.
For extra fun, next time a baby boomer tells you they liked the original Batman better than the new ones, tell them you too liked the black and white one where he fights an evil Japanese scientist and his nuclear cannon ;-)
I like to inform them that the first one they saw was a parody, not the original. Context is crucial to all things. -
Re:Nice thought
I've probably been beaten to the punch, and this isnt really a direct quote
... but
http://www.bureau42.com/view/3011
A quote from Joss on Whedonesque.com:
All right, now I have to jump in and set the record straight. EW is a fine rag, but they do take things out of context. Obviously when I said I had 'closure', what I meant was "I hate Serenity, I hated Firefly, I think my fans are stupid and Nathan Fillion smells like turnips." But EW's always got to put some weird negative spin on it. But so we're clear once and for all: If you read a quote saying "I'd love to do more in this 'verse with these actors in any medium" all I'm saying is that Nathan has a turnipy odor. It's not his fault, he doesn't eat a lot of them but everyone else in the cast noticed it and tht's not really something I'm prepared to deal with any more. And Jewel said outright she wouldn't do scenes with him except stuff like the SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER funeral scene which was outside in a high SPOILER wind. So if I do manage to find another incarnation for my beloved creation, it will have been totally against my will.
I hope that clears everything up. Oh, and when I say I want to do a Spike movie, it means I have a bunion on my toe.
-joss (by which I mean Tim)
(no, actually me.)
SO - key details. 1) main actor smells like turnips. I can't smell but in context this seems negative, as no one will work with him.
2) Joss Whedon doesn't like serenity or firefly
3) He's not really looking to make any more of the universe.
*shrug* good enough for me. -
Re:Let it die
Its time to let it go people..
Look at the farscape fans.. We got a 'finale' and let it die a dignified death.
Um, your analogy is a bit strained. The Sci-Fi channel was content to let Farscape die at the end of season 4, even with a major cliffhanger ending that would be unresolved; it was only through a massive fan campaign to save the show that the Farscape mini-series (the Peacekeeper War) was realized. This allowed much of the story arc planned for season 5 to be told, and many of the loose ends were tied up.
With Enterprise, we again have a fan campaign to save the series, and though some would argue the case, I would say that season 4 of Enterprise is by far the best one yet, and what the show should have been in seasons 1-3. (Thank you, Manny Coto.) Farscape was cut down in its prime, and I'd argue that the same holds true for Enterprise.
I would argue that if the fans of Farscape "let it go," as you're advising Enterprise's fans to do, the show wouldn't have had the dignified death you speak of. Rather, it would have fizzled out and left too many questions unanswered. The season-ending cliffhanger at the end of season 4 was certainly not the "finale" we all hoped for. That's why the mini-series was such a godsend. (Yeah, I would have been happier with a fifth season, but better to get something than nothing.)
Incidentally, Jolene Blalock has opined that the show's finale is "appalling." Not the blaze of glory you want a show to go out on... -
Re:Firefly?
Am I the only one who hasn't heard of this show?
I would think that there are a lot of people who don't know that show. It was only on for 11 episodes...out of order, on a random timeslot, and not hyped very much.
It was also cancelled before they aired the pilot. Wich on a stupidity scale of 1 to 10 is an easy 15.
Does anyone have a better description than "space western"?
Yes, here is a sci-fi site with reviews of all the episode that made it to the air.
You can also read my journal entry on the subject.
Of course, I wrote that entry in a time long-gone when other networks were maybe gonna air it instead of Fox, but alas, that never came to be. -

I haven't written in the past couple of years because I'm retiring.

Stargate SG-1 Season 1 DVD
Those of you who haven't explored the Sci-Fi news slashbox may be interested in my review of the first season of Stargate SG-1 on DVD that CmdrTaco mentioned. (Season two is due on September 3, if you care.)

And don't forget my review at Bureau 42
You can read it here. This movie was SO much better than Ep. 1, it was unbelievable. I even thought it was better than Spider-Man. I plan to go see it again on opening day, if nothing else for the Matrix trailer.

Re:My Theater Experience
I stand corrected. (Our theater was only equipped with DTS.)
Incidentally, I saw the movie last night (and reviewed it here). The problems described above didn't happen, but the place they are described as starting the the beginning of the last reel of the movie. I'm guessing they had problems making enough copies, as the theater I was at had to delay our 8:30 screening until 9:00, and the 9:00 show was moved to the theater next door. This is a pretty definite sign that they only received one print but were expecting two, and were forced to run the shows in tandem.

How's This For Real Looking? Here's a neat swimsuit pic of Aki, and for the ladies, here's one of Gray.
At first I thought it was the models for the characters, but it's the CGI.

everyone.net.Everyone.net has a pretty nice system, though (as with most of 'em) it could use some improvement.
Pro: You sign up, send in a tax form (if based in
.us), add a bit of cut-and-paste HTML, and you're off. Couldn't be simpler. You'll start racking up ad impressions within a couple hours.Con: So-so pay rates. Over the short time (a couple months) I've been using their service, it's averaged out to maybe 6 CPM (cents per 1000 ads displayed). And their ad-fu uses JavaScript. Also, I don't think you can run ads on multiple domain names through one account (I signed up for ads on Bureau 42, and thought I'd add the ads to my personal site, but I get mostly broken-image links on the latter.
If you want a fairly short-term solution, though, while you look for something better or set up your own ad software, it's hard to go wrong here.
