But there is a reason why there is not that many OS X viruses.

They were, but then somebody gave a shit about Mac.

Re:slashdot in bogus Mac zombie report
Since when was it news that most software on pirated sites contain malware.
It's news because it's Mac malware and Apple needs all the publicity they can get.

but We must blame them and cause a fuss...
Ok people, I'll keep this short. Stop blaming everything else for the upbringing of your children and look directly at the lack of parenting.
Videogames didn't cause it, Movies didn't cause it, that crazy hip hop music that the kids are listening to today didn't cause it. The lack of a parent not disciplining their kid did.
This comic is to a Mr Jack Thompson who's now been disbarred but is for every dirt bag out there that wants to blame something else other than himself for when his kid screws up:
http://cad-comic.com/comic.php?d=20051012
It's also sad that the most relevant line comes from the Southpark movie but here it is:
We must blame them and cause a fuss
Before somebody thinks of blaming us! -
Re:Linux: 4096
I noticed you didn't comment on my main point. Anything after 'By the way' was from a personal point of view.
"Personal" meaning for yourself, for fun or generally for a non-serious purpose.
I work from home. Most of my personal projects also launch into commercial products. Linux and open source software is all I use for daily and work related use. Yes, I develop for Windows and I can tell you the difference is staggering in ease of use (I suppose that is biased as I've been using Linux longer than Windows)
Needless to say my small company rakes in more in one month than you probably make in a year.On the other hand, as I sit here idly working away at a contract assignment on my Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 install...
'contract assignment' == you work at some dickheaded day job pushing papers. "Yes, boss. No, boss. Sure, I'll suck your cock for a raise, boss."
Honestly you say "Gentoo Linux 2008.0" like you're bragging, not about the fact you are using Linux, but about specifically running the 2008.0 Gentoo install. What? You want a pat on the back or something?
Every distribution is different. It was actually the equivalent of saying 'I use Microsoft Windows Vista' (microsoft=gentoo, windows=linux, vista=2008.0).
Linux is only a kernel. Saying "I use linux" does not have any meaning at all. I could probably name 30+ different flavours/distros off the top of my head that are "Linux".
Thus, stating the distro and version is not out of the ordinary... especially when compared to the MS equivalent. In case you haven't been following, Photoshop CS2 isn't just old, it's very old. Two generations behind in fact. I also love how you have to qualify that you "own" these products for some reason.
Not really, no. I've used CS3 and there was nothing new and exciting that said "Buy Me! I contain great value over CS2". CS4 has a few features I'd like, but there are other open source programs that accomplish the few things I would want if ever needed. So far I don't need it.
Only about 1700 items in that "huge" database are rated as Platinum, which means they work as they should, and most of them look like insignificant and unknown freeware utilities.
Really? I was not aware that the following were insignificant freeware programs:
- Guild Wars (All Versions)
- Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne
- Dreamweaver CS3
- 3DMark2000
- Xara X & Xara 3D
- Microsoft Office 200 & 2003 (2007 is currently Gold Status)Well, I just spent a few hours working in Cubase and Fruity Loops. Now I am about to fire up Dead Space and play it a little. Nice to know you're doing these things better under Linux though.
Ah, but both run under Linux with minor tweaks. I'll give Dead Space until Xmas before it is at least silver status.

Re:MineIf you're ashamed of the comics you read to the point where you completely dismiss them as "bad" or "stupid", why even bother listing them? For that matter, why be ashamed?
Here are the ones I read, and I see no reason to be ashamed of any of them. If you don't like them, no one is forcing you to read them.

Uh huh
I've got to say, when I first started to see all the marketing crud they are doing for Halo 3 I thought it was pathetic. The "game fuel" thing really clenched it for me.
I think Ctrl+Alt+Del captured it.

Well, if the ones hitting on you with swords stop to try and hit on you with bad pick-up lines, abuse the chance.
Note: I am a male in and out of games, so I don't take this particular chance at exploiting an opponent, but when I get any chance, I take it. -

There's A Blocklist Available from Tim Buckley
Tim Buckley of the Ctrl-Alt-Del webcomic made a blocklist available to prevent gold farming sites showing up in google ads.
http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/news.php?i=1011
" A few days ago I talked a bunch about gold farming and its adverse effect on MMO's. This caused the google ads on our page to specifically display the gold selling ads in their inventory, so we could effectively block them.
We've now compiled the list we're using it and made it available to you. If you run a website that used google ads, feel free to use this list to help block these gold farmers. If you frequent a website that uses google ads, email them this list and ask them to use it to block gold farmers.
Like I said, I doubt gold farming will ever disappear, but every one less customer makes the business less profitable for them."
I found this rather helpful. -

No quit?
One thing that I love about our company is that there is no 'quit' in this company.
Translation: We're gonna throw money at this market until we have it sewn up, just like we're doing with the console market. Turn a profit? We're Sony! Fuck profit! -
I'll agree that...There are too many people who think their opinions matter to the public. There are definatly too many people who are getting paid to tell us thier opionions. I get sick of all the Gamespot, IGN, EGM, GamePro, PSM, Nintendo Power, and anybody else that reviews a game. Lately, I've come to rely on the opionions of people who are dumb enough to buy most of the games I don't want to play. That is, if my friends haven't played them first. If they give a good review, and I end up profiting for it, I slip 'em a few bucks via paypal. If not, I need not worry (no offense for the dumb enough comment, but they've weeded out some terrible games for me). They don't have to be restrained when they want to go on a two paragraph rant about the play control in game X, or the absurdness of the story line.
I'm not saying shut down all the media, I'm saying shut down the media ego. Yes, thank you for playing the game long before I can. Yes, thank you for telling me the quality of the graphics and sound. No, thank you, I'd rather not read a fourteen page blowout of Halo 2/DOA Ultimate/Fable. No, thank you, I don't need you to fill half the rag with opionions from editors about what it was like to be at E3. And so on...

been a few years...
web comics have been around for years. Comics like PennyArcade and Ctrl+Alt+Del are pretty successful and have strong followings. I would have to say that the New York Times is running this is story several years to late.

Re:Cue CmdrTaco's OpenBoot Troll
And that' one thing I change (well, try to anyway) when I sell a machine. I inform people of things that most people are completely oblivious of. Differences between AMD and Intel chips, exactly WHY they should get their spyware removed instead of just buying a new box, that numbers don't govern the entire performance of the machine, etc. Although the market where I work is pretty much comprised of rednecks, hicks, and people with 5-10 year old boxes who know absolutely nothing about computers. A great example is in this webcomic (which feels like 7/10 of my sales and the sales of my companions) http://cad-comic.com/?t=archives&date=2003-10-10 Anyway, I'm trying to change the views of SOME people that whats emblazoned on the front of the box is not at all what governs your performance. Example: Recently we got a few new Pentium D systems in the store, one of which being a large Sony VAIO that comes with a big Logitech 5.1 surround system. People see that it's clocked at 2.8, so they automatically think it's inferior to a 3.2 P4 system. Then I explain that the computer has two processor cores, gets things done more efficiently, and such, quoting a personal example I had while setting up such a machine NEXT to an AMD64 system, it multitasked much better and got the "complete setup" including anti-virus, antispyware, Windows update, and such done in 15 minutes where the AMD64 system hung when I tried to do the WinUpdate and a Norton Trial removal at the same time. Took that one half an hour. People were impressed and said that they would look into things other than numbers in the future.

Re:How would a book work?Simple. Do the same thing Absath did with his Ctrl-Alt-Del Vol 1 book:
Put Commentary In It
Let's say a comic wouldn't make sense without a news post, just have Gabe or Tycho write a little bit of commentary in a bubble somewhere on the page. I particularly enjoy Absath's commentary in his book. Let me in on the little details that go along with a web comic and its story.
