Re:GM versus Gene Drive
Genocide should be illegal world-wide!
No one seems to mind genocidal action against the guinea worm/dracunculiasis, which is [thankfully] getting very close to extinction in large part due to efforts by former President Carter, Gates Foundation, and other world health groups ( https://www.cartercenter.org/h... ). Mosquito-transmitted diseases are mainly spread by the invasive Aedes mosquito, so eradication of that specific species could be justified, and GM tools could target that species while sparing other mosquito species.

What you said, and more.

Re:Beyond the law?Through inheritance (isn't OOP a wonderful thing?).
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 12. And the UDHR was ratified in June 1992 and signed into law by Pres. Bush.
The constitution provides for the process, which has been followed.
Of course, one might cynically note many other actions that appear to be against the law, yet go unprosecuted; or indeed laws that conflict with international obligations as established by treaty, or laws that conflict with the constitution.
(Yes, I know parent was being rhetorical).

Carter is still on the job
In some ways his best accomplishments were done after his term:

Re:And this is why
Care to cite any evidence? As far as I know, elections in Venezuela are closely watched by thousands of UN observers, and they never declared any significant fraud since Chavez is in power. Check this.
Which is more than you can say about Baby Bush's first election...

Re:Firestone ?
Could this be the drug industry's "Firestone"? Yet another example of he classic irresponsible/corrupt/greedy corp. that tries to cover up its own blunders.
If Merck is as you say, they wouldn't be running this program for free. -
Re:I wonder...
Ummm, yeah, I wonder if Chavez is really interested in helping the US, or if he is more interested in turning poor people into communists?
Gee get thee to the 1950s!
Communism is dead. North Korea is probably the only communist country left in the world, and that's a damn wierd place that no one really knows what is going on inside, so maybe not even that one. Sure, China and powerhouse Cuba may call themselves communist, but they really aren't. Totalitarian? Oh most definately! Communist? No. China stopped being communist the moment Deng Xiaopeng said, "To get rich is glorious." Cuba has a complete capitalist economy based on American dollars.
And if you think that there's some big undercurrent in the US wanting to be communist, again. The KGB tried for years to build a meaningful communist movement and failed. In fact, looking at the since declassified KGB reports from the 50s and 60s shows that the KGB agents reported that it was a wasted effort, and get this... they were losing KGB agents do to defection.
And one more inconvient fact about Chavez. He was democratically elected in an election the Carter Center as flawed, but did not change the outcome. In other words, the election is valid. -

Venezuela, India, Australia...
Growing trend, so there's probably more post-mortem analyses available from other nations' experiences.

Of some tangential relevance, the Carter Center's report on the Venezuelan recall vote, which involved e-voting machines that produced paper receipts for verification:

Re:Victory?
It has to be a dictatorship, we don't like it, even if the people of venezuela do...

Come on, Jimmy Carter said that vote was OKSee here..
And if we can't trust Jimmy Carter, who can we trust?
Of course, Jimmy Carter also managed to negotiate that treaty with North Korea where Kim Jong Il promised to not build nuclear weapons...

Re:bull
This is utterly bullshit and you know it. I am from Venezuela and I support our democratic government. It is the immaturity of the opposition which is causing all the noise. The OAS and the Carter Center (both of wich were requested by the opposition as a condition to attend the recall, BTW) audited the result and found no evidence of fraud (the error given by the audit was 0.02%). They compared the votes in the paper trail (that was verified by each voter and is digitally signed so it 'cant' be forged -this depends in how much you trust the technology provider for the elections-).
The observers (the Carter Center, the OAS and about a hundred others) opened the boxes for 150 voting centers and compared the paper receipts with the digital results, giving the error previously mentioned. When the opposition called fraud (without any proof, because they have changed their theory as the previous one is demonstrated false) a new analysis was performed by the CNE, the Carter Center, the OAS and the observers using 200 random boxes and comparing (once again) the paper receipts with the digital results. The error of this second audit was in the range of 0.05%. The opposition did not attend to the second audit because they wanted a manual recount of _all_ the votes in _all_ the country.
Also, several independent groups (I don't have here the other links) made an statistical analysis on the opposition's main argument. The opposition (not everyone, a lot of opposition leaders have accepted the result, but the media don't give them any coverage. In fact some reporters have had 'live' fights with these leaders arguing that their attitude only benefits Chavez) states that the rate of coincidences in the voting centers for the 'SI' (YES) option was a proof of 'tops' or 'limits' for this option in the machines. But the independant analysis found that:
a) These alleged 'limits' are present in every election and only demonstrate that people on a given geograical region tend to have similar prefferences.
b) The alleged 'limits' are present for the two options (the opposition only talks about the 'SI', but the 'NO' option has a similar pattern). The 'NO' option has fewer (but not much) coincidences than the 'SI' option, which is normal given that the 'NO' option got more votes.
c) These alleged limits do not demonstrate a fraud (they aren't proof that there was no fraud either) -
MOD PARENT UP!!!Oh, where are my mod points when i need them...
Yes, indeed these are great news! I'm really happy that Velug finally managed to pull out something good for us all
:)Oh yes, i live in Caracas, i run Freebsd in my home, i also do a little sysadmin job in another Freebsd machine on a cybercafe, and put Linux in a community FM radio (94.9FM) (only heard in parts of Caracas)
Im always trying to show the benefits of free software to my friends, and it is not easy. The same, well known issues arise again and again, but i will never give up
:) Of course i don't push people to anything, in the end its their choice to give it a try. The incidents in Peru have been very inspiring for me to continue, and i hope to meet some of these fine people now finally in a position to do something positive for us all.I can't accept the position of almost all the privately held media in Venezuela that absolutely everything out of this governement is bad and worst than the previous. This can't simply be true. Too many important people has been given now the oportunity that none of the previous corrupt politicians ever made to anyone unless a lot of cash were offered beforehand, in which case, of course was only for the benefit of the big foreign corporation interests.
Please continue to spread out the good positive news!
For people not living in Venezuela:
Most private media owners declared war to the current President, Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias, who apparently refused to continue maintaining special privileges for the sector. It was clearly evidenced in past Coup d'Etat (that only lasted 2 days!) when they not only closed the only non private held TV station (and all community radios), but also they self censored themselves by not showing any kind of news coverage of the events.
People who had satellite and cable TV could watch from CNN and Telemundo the events that were taking place only blocks away, but none of the local media were willing to show. One worker who later resigned in channel RCTV was literally given the order "Don't put on air any pro chavez demonstration".
Any journalist is supposed to get and show you both sides of a story, and then let you decide. In Venezuela, most news will only cover one side. As you have clearly seen, the intent for a few (used to be more priviledged than now class) is to get rid of Chavez at all costs. Simply because he is not willing to adhere to their interests.
Yes, 10 yrs ago Chavez attempted a Coup d'Etat, failed and went to prision. He later was set free, founded a political Party, and he cleanly won elections for president in 98. Truly some people were so angered by all the previous governements that made a dream of having a sort of "mesiah" that would came and clean it all. The reality showed otherwise. Trying to revert 4 decades of corruption is no small task, and it still erodes current goverment, so there have been lots of mistakes.
Mistakes that were not disguised, or denied, mistakes thas had been admited! And countless efforts have been made to settle things down, dialogue tables, international mediators (including the Carter Center), but there is a small yet powerful sector which happens to control most media which simply cares nothing and want him out.
I am still positive though. Things like Community Radio (known as Low Power FM movement in the states) and adoption of "Free Software whenever possible by the governement, are clear indications that things can be done, and ARE being done.
