Re:OS X isn't unreliable...
While OS X is as stable as any other *nixy system, if aqua poops out on you it is essentially a crash, as there are no virtual consoles or key combinations that get you out of it. If you go to this page the flash content will freeze the desktop (using internet explorer). In linux, you can simply go to a different virtual console and kill stuff, but in OS X you have to SSH in from another box or reboot.
I'm not advocating virtual consoles, but it would be nice to have a key combination that killed the loginwindow process. -
Banjo Video clip
If you're wondering where the name Banjo came from Cartoon Networks's site has a funny clip.

Cartoon Dolls vs. Anime
According to the archived data for May 2001, it looks like Anime is not as heavily searched as Cartoon Dolls. I wonder which one "The Powerpuff Girls" would be listed under?

Tad Ghostal to Release to Web
Posted by Hemos on Monday April 09, @11:45AM
from the cool-new-series dept.
T. Roche writes "Tad Ghostal, host of the near talented talk show Space Ghost Coast To Coast and the children's series Cartoon Planet will be releasing a new comedy series on the web. From the site: "The World Wide Space Ghost is not going to simply be another web page. Oh, no siree, Bob. It will be an epic adventure -- (Zorak: Stupid!) exciting interviews, presented in 30-minute installments more like a television show, that can either be downloaded (Zorak: Stupid!) and be watched at leisure or viewed right on the site. The fun doesn't stop when the Ghost is in the house! (Zorak: Stupid!) Are you done? (Zorak: Yeah... I'm good.) There will be cake, party hats, and pictures of me, Space Ghost, all available as part of the package. It can't miss, kids." No siree, Bob? Who talks like that? Anyway, I don't know if any other major superhero has tried this. You can see the super inviso-page at http://www.ghostplanet.com." The whole whiz-diddly-bang-diddler she-bang of a good-ole-time-ruckus is supposed to launch June 1. But I still say that this looks more like I think the online interview will be like - less like Slashdot's Bash The Guest idea, which was still dumb, IMHO. -
Re:I saw Space Ghost once
The "Space Ghost" mentioned here is usually not the original series, but Cartoon Network's homegrown Space Ghost Coast to Coast, which is a show that cannot be easily described but can be very, very funny. Check it out, Sundays at midnight EST.

Moltar says..."It's extreme cooking for the nineties - like Julia Childs turned Sumo wrestler."
I'll see this movie just to find out what ingredient they come up with. I just hope they have actual chefs in it. Hand doubles would really screw this up pretty bad.
Anyhoo, I hope the screenwriter manages to do a little better than his proud Shasta McNasty heritage suggests.

www.goatse.kids
Obviously, people would try to get things like "www.goatse.kids" into the
.kids domain all the time. It would be a constant battle, and the owners of .kids might be responsible for anything which slips through, which would make it a risky thing to own.But the real problem isn't the clear-cut cases, it's the weird fringe ones. Should you let a site like Jessi The Kid onto the
.kids domain, even though it's creepy as hell? How about Child Supermodels which seems to be another creep out site? And it doesn't even have to get that creepy. On yesterday's Powerpuff Girls marathon, one episode involved the Mayor being naked, and they showed his animated, nude, behind. It was clearly funny, but when some lameass parent in Butfux, Nebraska complains about it, does www.powerpuff.kids get taken out of that domain?

Re:Geeks don't like stuffed animalsBut I love fuzzies! I got me:
- A Bubbles Powerpuff Girl Bean Bag
- A Tinky Winky (The gay one) Tellytubby (it was a gift)
- A Bela Fleck & the Flectones Cosmic Hippo
- A 12" tall Eric Cartman (he's so cuddly)
- And although he's not stuffed, I got a H.M. Murdock action figure!! (from the A-Team!!!)
I want to get a stuffed Tux as well as a BSDemon.
And yes, I am a guy. BTW, you should see a couple of my friend's rooms, they are filled with stuffed animals. It's really just a matter of being a big softie. Being a big softie is not mutually exclusive with being a geek.
:-)

Re:That thing sounds fantastic
1) Recording stuff based on what you've enjoyed in the past is all well and good -- but won't your viewing get more and more homogenous? Maybe they could build communities, so that people could recommend stuff to each other, or something -- some human element to keep it from getting too samey.
What you want is called "collaborative filtering." Imagine if the TiVo kept track of what you watch, and submitted it to their central database, along with everyone else's watching habits. They could then look for patterns, such as you watch the Tom Green show and you watch Space Ghost: Coast to Coast. Then it could match your patterns against other people's patterns, ie most people who watch Tom Green and Space Ghost also tune in to the Daily Show. The TiVo could then suggest watching the Daily Show.If people use it to plan events to watch, it could even notice that people who watch Space Ghost and Tom Green have programmed their TiVo's to record the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on PBS, and ask you if you want to do the same. Privacy concerns aside, this would be welcomed by most people, but wouldn't prevent homogeny in their TV viewing. Then again, most people don't mind homogeny, they even encourage it.
BTW, if this all sounds familiar, think back to the days of yore and Firefly.

Help Test Our New Server! Posted by CmdrTaco on Mon August 30, 12:51 PM EDT
from the load-testing-is-cool dept.
So here it is: A mirror of Slashdot (as of a week or so ago). It exists now for testing: So feel free to post comments and help test the new load balancer. For the curious, the new system has 3 http machines (P2s) and one mysql box (a dual P2) with a load balancer trying to keep everyone all equally busy. And its about time: the old setup has been really stressed out trying to keep up with everyone. Anyway, don't get to attached to any of your comments here, when we're satisfied that the new setup is stable, I'm gonna mirror over Slashdot and make the final switcheroo.( Read More... | 335 of 335 comments )

Now Police Can 'See' Through Walls Posted by Roblimo on Wed August 18, 12:40 PM EDT
from the move-along-there's-nothing-to-see-here dept.
Bram writes "Just found an article about another way to invade privacy." He's talking about hand-held radar systems police can use to detect breathing, beating hearts or other motion through walls and other obstacles. Sounds like a declassified version of the Ground Support Radar [GSR] units we used years ago in the Army. I can see why police would want them, and I can also see why Bram considers them a privacy threat. Depends on how they're used, I suppose.( Read More... | 205 of 205 comments )
FreeType posts patent warning Posted by Hemos on Wed August 18, 11:53 AM EDT

Anonymous Coward writes "According to the the FreeType web page, there have been some new concerns raised about Apple's patents on TrueType.
