Re:The identity of a handheld platform
Not sure when you last tried it, but Marc's constantly updating it. In one of the more recent builds he did add support for quoting using ">" and it works for me. Download the latest stable and check the composition preferences, you should see the option you're looking for.
There's still no way to change from top-posting as far as I know. I've gone back and forth between defaulting top-posting to bottom-posting in thunderbird so many times that now I don't bother with any consistent style and just match whatever is happening with the email thread I'm currently in (what would really be nice would be some intelligence in the client to adjust according to what other folks are doing, and use my default setting if it doesn't know)
Marc's really good with adding new features constantly. And since you don't pay for upgrades, it's well, well worth the cost. I just posted a forum comment to him suggesting he revisit the bottom-posting issue. Check back in the forum every now and then to see if/when he adds it.

Re:The identity of a handheld platformWhen I bought my Treo I seriously considered the Windows versions. (I generally don't like Windows - it as a platform just doesn't suit my tastes) The deal-breaker was the screen resolution, and so I got my 650. I think it was the right choice for me but it's agonizing that they haven't modernized the OS. I want international text support. I want decent multitasking support. (I want my device to be able to fetch my e-mail without crashing the whole device in the middle of whatever I'm doing.)
Me too, that's why I purchased Chatter mail on my treo. Best $40 I've spent on software, ever.
That said though, I definitely agree about the aging OS in Palm. I've been looking forward to whatever linux-based OS they were going to come out with for many, many years now. I've had a Palm Personal, (with and without the upgrade chip), Palm III, Palm V, Palm Vx, Tungsten T2, Treo 650, and now a Treo 680. I've got too much software I know I'd miss if I hopped to any other platform, and the depth of well-done programs out there for the palm is amazing, but they really need to get off their butts with a modern OS.

"Convergence" is here - has been for a while...
Depends on what you call convergence. I call convergence a handheld that's reasonably small, handles data and voice, gives me real-time access to my e-mail, and serves as an effective adjunct to my laptop. And I call that a GSM Treo 650 - which I've owned for the better part of a year. With the addition of a quality IMAP-based e-mail client instead of Versamail, the Treo gets messages as they arrive, can do real background processing, and give me easy access and editing of all my accumulated information. If I wanted to, I could use the built-in camera to take pictures, and capture lo-res video to my SD card.
To me, that's convergence. The only thing it lacks is support for the higher-speed cellular broadband standards (and enough internal RAM), but the Treo 700w (Windows Mobile-based) works with the CDMA EV/DO service from Verizon, and the forthcoming 700p (PalmOS) is expected to work with Sprint's EV/DO network. GSM EDGE versions of both are slated to arrive pretty soon as well.
And the Blackberry that's covered here? That's the tip of the iceberg. The CTIA Wireless show is in Vegas less than two weeks from now. And there's sure to be quite a few relevant announcements there. I'm holding my breath for a ExpressCard-based EV/DO card, though - My MacBook Pro is on order and I'd rather use a card than tether a phone (I use a PC5220 card from Verizon right now with my existing PowerBook).
The ultimate definition? Convergence is a state of mind. And when your device does all the things you need, it matches that. -
Re:Push email on the Treo?
At least one email client, ChatterEmail (http://www.chatteremail.com/ - I am a satisfied user but otherwise have no connection) supports IMAP IDLE, which behaves about the same as blackberry-style push. Basically your Treo connects to the IMAP server and says "IDLE" which means "when anything changes, tell me about it." So new messages arriving triggers a message from the IMAP server to the client. From a user perspective, this is the same as push email -- it makes no difference to me whether the server or client technically initiates the connection. It has the advantage of being standards-based -- you are not tied to any particular server implementation.
There is also GoodLink, which I believe is more blackberry-style push where the network operator is involved -- network notices the device, tells the messaging server it's online, and then the messaging server initiates the connection and sends the data. -
Re:Push email on the Treo?
Yes it does, have a look at chattermail as an example. Do a google search on "treo 650 push mail" for more alternatives.

Re:Feh...
Your treo already has "push" email as well. It's called IMAP idle. http://www.chatteremail.com/

Have a Treo and access to IMAP? Get ChatterMail.
There's a great email program for Palm-powered smartphones (like the Treo 650) called ChatterMail (http://www.chatteremail.com/) that works as you'd expect with POP3 mail servers, but given an IMAP server, you can have email pushed to your treo as it arrives, normally within a few seconds.
The whole experience is pretty much just like Blackberry mail, except it is on a versitle hardware platform (heh heh heh). -
The real loser in this
(besides slashdot readers have to deal with (palm/rim)job jokes):
Chattermail
Great little program that got me through 2 years of Treo use. -
Re:Good
They mean automatic "push" synchronization, where your phone's calendar and e-mail are updated wirelessly over the cellular network. That's where the Blackberry has the default Treo beat. (Though there is a really nice piece of non-free software called Chatter that can do push e-mail for the Treo 650 with IMAP servers like fastmail).

Re:No suprise there.
There is push mail for the Treo if your server supports IMAP. You should check out Chatter mail.

Re:No suprise there.
And you don't need "push", the Treo supports polling.
Or, even better, you can use Chatter, which supports the IMAP Idle command, so it's more-or-less instant, like push, but without constantly polling the server. -
Re:Treo is killing it anyway
What about having to wait for your e-mail!
One word and one link. ChatterEmail.
