Re:Local party dominance is a major problem
Democrats have a complete lock on your local government, that is quite a feat! Even Chicago usually has at least one Republican and at least one independent.
Even DuPage County Illinois, in suburban Chicago, used to be uniformly Republican. It was the home of disgraced Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, and the, locally, infamous Phillips brothers. Even DuPage county is no longer uniformly Republican.
Wherever you live must be ripe for corruption if the Dems have such a total lock on power. Anytime one party controls everything, government always becomes corrupted.

Re:Our PC society will be our demise!
One of the biggest threats our civilization faces - is our hellbent political correctness at any cost.
I know this is off topic, but the same thing is happening with Islam. It teaches hate and violence, but point that out and people call you racist (as if there was some kind of Muslim race) and froth at the mouth. The only peaceful Muslims are ones that don't follow the Koran - and they will also be targets of the ones that do follow it.
I am way, way more concerned about Islam than Ebola.

Re:Suggestion to BA
It's amazing how 230 people can board in 15 minutes with luggage if 200 don't have to wait for one person blocking the rather narrow path
It's because, outside of North America, people don't try to carry one hundred pounds of crap into the passenger cabin. Stowing the steamer trunk, plus hockey bag, plus giant purse is what slows things down in boarding:
http://www.chicagonow.com/dennis-byrnes-barbershop/files/2013/04/bags.jpg
Also add to the mix the general level of fitness in the USA - I fly frequently (67 segments last year) and by the time many passengers get down the jetway, down to row 30, and get all their gear stowed they're turning blue and wheezing like an old vacuum cleaner... Elsewhere in the world people are a little more "spry." -
Re:Dangerous ideasHonestly, ignorance is the problem. The US, and perhaps other countries, have two big issues with pornography. First, it is limited to sex so a movie like Hansel and Gretal gets an R rating instead of NC-17. Second, nudity and sex are always considered pornography so a movie like Dreamers get an NC-17 rating instead of an R rating. It is such ignorance that promotes the sex pornography industry because, after all, if you are going to have naked people, you might as well have then explicitly fucking for the camera because the rating is going to be the same. If there was more of a gradation for nudity and sex, like there is for violence, then we might have a country that is less afraid of the physical form, more able to hold intelligent conversations that do not devolve into what might be heard in the hallways on a middle school.
That said when people go out to make pornography they certainly know what they are making and labeling it as such helps everyone. It helps those that want to view it, and it helps those that do not themselves or their children to view it. Having a reasonable filter on internet access by default is not unreasonable. The only people it will hurt are the young people that want to see but only have access through their parents accounts. I don't really see this as an issue like the v-chip where a financial burden was put on society because a few parents were too lazy to take care of their kids. You do not need to pay extra to get extra content on the internet like you do on cable. One can choose to not let kids watch TV after a certain time.
And really, if we want to challenge this thing, self censorship like on TV and mainstream websites are really the place to start. If we want to make such censorship less relevant then we need to make a naked man or women less objectionable. When I travel to other countries, or watch British TV, it is clear that full frontal is not always pornography. Yet showing breasts or a penis will freak everyone out.

Re:What's the point of this?
How about all the women on twitter and facebook after Chris Brown beat the ever loving shit out of Rihanna and they were running around saying they'd let him beat the hell out of them? And attacking *her* for being beat up by him? That was pretty sickening shit. I didn't see any defense force out for that.
Pretty hideous shit, but it seems better to just let people be hideous so everyone else can have a platform to respond to them, which in turn emphasizes just how stupid the original hideous comments *are*.
Anyway . . .
"Call me crazy, buttttttt I would let Chris Brown beat me up anyyyy day"
"Everyone shut up about Chris brown being a woman beater... Shiiittt he can beat me up all night if he wants"
"Not gonna lie.. I think I'd let Chris Brown beat me #sosexy #lovehim #awkwardtweet #dontevencare"
"I'd let Chris Brown beat me up anytime
;) #womanbeater""I'd let Chris Brown beat me up"
"Like I've said multiple times before, Chris Brown can beat me all he wants.l... I'd do anything to have him oh my"
"chris brown could beat me all he wants, he is flawless"
"Chris brown.. Please beat me
;)""Chris brown could beat me up all he wants #idontcurr"
"I don't know why Rihanna complained. Chris Brown could beat me anytime he wanted to"
"Damn chris brown you can beat me up anytyme boo!"
"I would let Chris Brown beat me"
"I'd let Chris Brown beat me any day;)"
"I'd let chris brown punch me in the face"
"id let chris brown beat me"
"ok not gonna lie i'd let chris brown beat the eff out of me"
"i wish chris brown would punch me"
"Chris Brown could serenade me and then punch me in the eye. I'm down for it."
"I'd let chris brown punch me in the face"
"Dude, Chris brown can punch me in the face as much as he wants to, just as long as he kisses it (:"
"Chris brown can punch me ANY DAY."
"Okay i'd let Chris brown punch me in the face"
"chris brown can punch me whenever he wants #love"

Re:They rejected 16% salary increase over 4 years
Yes, it is insane to pay those who are teaching the children well.
If you were to look at teacher salary by location and student performance by location, you would notice a few things.
First, you would notice that some states pay substantially more per student (implied, higher teacher salaries).
You would then notice that those places also have the worst student performance, and that the best student performance tends to come with moderate per-student spending.
For example, consider:
Cost per-student per state
Notice the top 4-- DC, New York, Wyoming, New Jersey. Guess which of those 3 are at the bottom of the barrel in student performance?
DC, New York, New Jersey. For the record, the average teacher in Chicago makes ~$71,000. 30% over top of that is absurd; thats within the average salary range of a CCIE--of which there are only about 20,000 worldwide (salary range appears to be $95-120k).

Re:Not a new - or a particularly great - idea
If this weren't already +5 Insightful, I'd say "mod parent up".
The high pitched noise emitters were the worst idea ever. They were designed to keep teens from loitering in malls (and apparently called The Mosquito; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mosquito), but the pitch that they transmit at is perceptible by people up to 25.
When I was working in Chicago a couple of years ago, I had to cut through a park in the Loop, and then wait on the street next to that park for a bus, while commuting to work. That park had these high-pitch transmitters and, while not quite painful, they were really obnoxious to my ears. I certainly wasn't loitering in the park, and was a (mostly) productive citizen on my way to work, but because I was in my early 20s I could still hear this awfulness. (the only reference I could find to this emitter is at http://www.chicagonow.com/chicago-art-blog/2010/06/giant-eyeball-to-invade-chicago/)
The only nice thing about these high-pitch emitters is that teens eventually caught on and turned them against adults. My younger cousin once used me to test her ringtone, which transmitted at the Mosquito frequency and which she used in class so her teachers couldn't hear her phone when it went off.

Re:Culture loss?
I have never seen a US city consider making public services free on a holiday. It seems almost like it is opposed to the core values of much of the US.
Chicago offers free subway service on New Years Eve.

Best Buy, not the best at all
Best Buy is the worst of all the computer/tv/tech stores I've purchased from. They charge for ridiculous 'products' and 'services' that are little more than outright scams. They have been indicted for some of them. Their prices are terrible, and they outright lie about matching others prices. This IS NOT your usual non-techy "I bought the wrong part" or techy "I know better than you" complaint. The complaints against Best Buy have to do with their criminal behavior.
