I skipped my senior year of high school to attend The Clarkson School, a program that basically combines year 12 with freshman year in college, and the maturity issue was extremely apparent, in hindsight. Although, interacting with those of an older age was extremely beneficial in providing a "quick start" to collegiate learning and young adult development.

It's not a limitation. Hardware virtualization usually means virtualizing hardware in order to run more than one OS on it. OS virtualization is virtualizing the BASE OS to keep apps clearly separate from each other, for whatever reason. They're different. Saying that VMWare is better than Solaris Zones is comparing apples to oranges.

The claim that "OS virtualization is virtualizing the BASE OS to keep apps clearly separate from each other, for whatever reason" is absolutely incorrect with regards to Solaris containers. One of *many* studies:

Specifically, it notes that "Solaris containers do not isolate well-behaved containers from misbehaving containers." The consequence is that a bad zone could take down all zones. Both Xen domU's and VMWare guests provided better isolation than Solaris containers.

And you're also incorrect about hardware virtualization, but you probably already figured that out.

If you RTFA on the 'Xen' kernel, you'd see what's news. The Xen kernel supports some Nifty Virtual Machine Stuff which you won't find in a standard kernel

The cornstarch/water mixture is an example of a STF (Shear Thickening Fluid), which has a non-Newtonian flow. A recent Slashdot post nicely explains how hitting water at high speed differs from hitting a STF at high speed.

Technically VGA is.. you can't increase resolution...blah blah blah. This is why people at Slashdot need to all be slapped. This is a press release, of course it's not technically correct. I'll help you guys out here.

This tech is to increase visibility and clarity on low res screens by taking into account sub-pixels. They are not increasing resolution, they're just stepping back and reconsidering what a pixel is. Mac OS X does this, but it's not the same thing as Samsung's tech, since it's only for text and it's done in software. Same concept though, Samsung has just taken it a step farther. On an ultra low-res, underpowered device, having sub-pixel rendering/antialiasing on silicon would help readability immensely.

And not just in the current Dos/Win days.

Here at the university where I am a sysadmin, we get approx. 100K emails per day and we have no problem pushing them through spamassassin on a single server with dual 2.8 xeon processors. How in the world could this place possibly need 20 servers to process this much mail?!

I know/work with a bunch of people (not to mention I lived in MA for a few years). They are very smart and nice but honestly not my cup of tequila.

I like partying with Clarkson U. grads .... now I'm biased because I went there but I still find out in the field even the 50 grads know how to throw down. I think its something about being in the middle of no where that teaches you how to have fun with booze and -20 temps.

Draw yourself out a probability tree and you'll see where you're going wrong.

In this case the similiest thing to do is work out the probability that none of the drives fail. You gave 95% or 0.95. So, two drives is 0.95 * 0.95. Three drives is 0.95 * 0.95 * 0.95. And so on. So eight drives is 0.95 to the power of 8, which is 0.663, or 66.3%. So the probability of any drive failing is 1-0.663, or 33.7%.

• Obviously you haven't heard of the government cooking up bogus charges and jailing people. (Refer to the previous link and do your research)
• Obviously McCarthyism is not part of your collective mind.
• Obviously you haven't heard of John Ashcroft's recent decree to spy on antiwar activists.
• Obviously you believe the legal system represent justice. (I can't prove this to anyone. It is something that you will realize as you grow up and leave the cave that you have been living in--if you actually manage to do that!)
• Obviously you underestimate the power of the goverment.

Anyway... my undergrad was at an unknown state school, so I guarantee you I paid a whole lot less that most of the other folks. I started my entry-level job with friends who went to school in the same town as me, the only difference being they had a whole lot more debt than I did.

But I also have "name brand" masters. Cost to me? $0. How? Night school, tuition reimbursement. Not all companies have it but, but the two jobs I had both I have do (one, a huge multinational defense contractor with untold thousands of people, and two, a small ISV with about about 30 people).

I have a friend who got a full scholarship from the company we worked for, to go to school full-time to get his master's. They gave him part of his salary and he didn't have to go to work for 2 years. Part of the deal was you'd work for X more years for the company, or repay the value. But, a place hired him away and paid it off for him (yeah, late 90s, that kind of stuff happened).

There are tax implications, too. If you take classes to improve or maintain skills in your current profession, and even if you don't get reimbursed, it's all tax deductible. Why do you think employers offer it? You need to have a "current profession", obviously, in order to qualify for this.

So: go to a state school. Get a job. Go to a "name school" on your employer's dime. To be extra miserly, start at community college and transfer to the state school.

Of course, it helps to get kick-ass grades. Fumble a course in grad school and you'll find you're stuck with a whopping bill - your employer doesn't pay for lousy grades. How's that for motivation?

I'm one of the developers on patchdot. This is still a very early stage and the source is pretty gross. Like the teamlead posted earlier please give us feedback, this could become a very usefull tool for following the linux kernel. Also we will be providing the code back to PHPNuke so others can use our modules. One last thing the post didn't mention, patchdot is one of the projects sposored by the Clarkson Open Source Institute.

For those of you who don't remember, I'm one of the guys that helped win a z800 for Clarkson University that will be used in our Open Source Institute. I'm also the technical lead for COSI (whatever that means ;) so it is my job to know about what a z800 can do for us.

Some history, Clarkson University has always had a very good relationship with IBM: they employ a large amount of Clarkson students and graduates (including me, in the Extreme Blue program. So if you think that biases my opinion, well too bad as I've talked with the guys making sure that Linux runs and is fully integrated on the Linux platform and one of the original Linux S390 authors Boas Betzler.

All of these people have real experience with what the zSeries can do, as do I since I've seen it in action. A zServer is unique in the sense that you can (with the right model) run Linux S390, VM, zOS and other guest operating systems in Logical Partitions. These all act independantly of one another just as if they were seperate machines on a network. This is great if you have DB2 with maybe a web frontend because both of those machines can talk at memory speed via HiperSockets and the only outside link is the network connection to the web server, which is at Gigabit speed (did I mention that you can do full speed gigabit with one of these things on multiple interfaces?).

This article basically says that you can take a midrange Sun server and do everything that a z800 can do but much better. I don't know of any Sun Server that can run N Linux clients in a VM at full speed.

They aren't the solution to every problem, but a zServer certainly is a better solution that what is presented in the article. I really don't have the time to go in to detail with everything as it's a lengthy article but suffice it to say that this is no where near 100% accurate.

By adulthood, Mendeleev's periodic table of the elements is firmly planted in a typical mind either as a tool for study or proof of mystical forces at work in nature. There are alternative structures: some clever and others using alternate media, extensions to the table providing nuclear structure, fermi surfaces, and line spectra.

Still others are extraordinarily cross-thematic, merging chemistry with comic books, poetry or haiku. But only the grouping-nature of the columns is retained in rejected elements, condiments and beer. Eventually the elements and the periodic qualities have been lost entirely, reducing the periodic table to a design template for topical lists of funk and rock music, comedy and TV shows, famous mathematicians and presidents, even SGI products. Soon a complete breakdown of the scientific aspect yields no similarity to the original, becoming a glorified table, a marketing tool, or hype itself. There is mounting evidence of a conspiracy.

We here at Clarkson University, the place where two of the students won the recent linux challenge, there's a huge linux following. There's even a professor here whose sole job is basically heading the COSI (scroll down a ways)(clarkson open source institution).

I also remember talking to a grad student whose experience after an internship with microsoft was nothing less than "I would never work for them, and I will never again use their software" Now them's fightin' words, and the general feeling isn't quite that harsh, and windows still gets used to a large degree here, but that's mainly because there's nothing much to do at Clarkson other than play games.

So yes, the educated will turn to linux, that's really not that big a discovery. It's really always been this way. Just don't think for a second that Micro$oft will be going out of business just yet. Not until a truly idiot-user friendly Linux version comes out will a conversion of the home PC market come about. Granted, that's not a very large discovery itself, but that's the whole point. This article isn't that groundbreaking.

Being apart of the Clarkson Open Source Institute can earn you actual credit hours, we have projects that we do for the community and for the school. Linux training and tutorial sessions that provide newbies with a jumpstart into running linux. We also have several software projects underway that will help the campus and Open Source community at large. We provide a CVS server to the campus with tutorials on how to properly use CVS, as well as a central meeting place for recruiters looking for linux talent and others interested in linux in general.

There are a few efforts underway to reduce fuel consumption..

It doesn't use any Win32 APIs. It supports Beame & Whiteside TCP/IP. Runs over Crynwr packet drivers. And a wireless connection rocks. I was a LPB for a while, until Clarkson shut down my back-door wireless T-1 equivalent.

Temporary restraining order DENIED!

Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

Temporary restraining order DENIED!

Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

I assume because of the size of my area and school, I have not had nearly the trouble that is described here. I do fit the description though, every last point of it. I'm a nerd, a geek, whatever you want to refer to us as. But I am certainly no killer. I have played my fair share of violent games. But I am certainly no killer. It takes a heck of a lot more than that to "make" a person into a killer. There have to be pre-existing conditions, other problems, with deeper roots. Simply spending time in front of a computer screen doesn't turn a person into a cold-blooded killer.

I also know what it is like to have high school as a living hell. Middle school too. For years I have been singled out as the geek, the smart one who no one likes, but everyone suddenly is best friends with when they need help on their homework. It is, by no means, fun. Others are envious, jealous of the abilities of the geeks, the nerds. They turn that jealousy into hate, rage, and insults. They take out their own percieved inadequacy on us. For what reason? Simply because they are, themselves, too weak to handle it!

I, however, am somewhat atypical in a different way. I have found a way out, an escape from high school, away from the mindless peers who feel the need to raise themselves up by putting others down. No, I'm not going to kill people and go to jail (interesting, but stupid idea). I'm leaving high school, and going to a more conductive, productive environment at college/university. I want everyone to know that you can do it too. It is possible, and even sometimes encouraged, to leave high school a year early, go to college, fulfill your freshman year there, which concurrently filling your senior graduation requirements and graduating with your class. Some special programs exist for people wishing to do this. The ones I have encountered are at The University of Southern California and Clarkson University. Despite my acceptance to the Clarkson School (their special program), I have decided to take my education to the next level at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, whose support and project-based curriculum caught my eye.

So, my point is, you can do something about your situation. Those of you still early in your high school years, maybe there is less you can do. But there is hope ahead. Never give up, never forget who you are. Do not let yourself be defined by what is "in" or "cool." Be who you are, and do it without hurting others. Be persistent, and you will be heard.
