Re:Is it news or isn't it?
Microsoft is a company that cannot "let go" of anything. Take
.NET for example -- it is a miserable failure that they won't let die.A few web sites that use
.NET technology:Costco - http://www.costco.com/
Crate & Barrel - http://www.crateandbarrel.com/
Home Shopping Network - http://www.hsn.com/
Buy.com - http://www.buy.com/
Dell - http://www.dell.com/
Nasdaq - http://www.nasdaq.com/
Virgin - http://www.virgin.com/
7-Eleven - http://www.7-eleven.com/
Carnival Cruise Lines - http://www.carnival.com/
L'Oreal - http://www.loreal.com/
Remax - http://www.remax.com/
Monster Jobs - http://www.monster.com/
USA Today - http://www.usatoday.com/
ComputerJobs.com - http://computerjobs.com/
Match.com - http://www.match.com/
National Health Services (UK) - http://www.nhs.uk/
CarrerBuilder.com - http://www.careerbuilder.com/
Newegg http://newegg.com/
Geico http://geico.com/
Capital One http://capitalone.com/
Zecco http://zecco.com/And that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Maybe you should tell all those sites that
.NET is a miserable failure? Or if you were just (successfully) karmawhoring, I am sorry to interrupt the circle jerk on here. -
Re:The Worlds Lost Decade
I personally run/have run many huge enterprise apps on
.NET. It's actually a pretty good platform if you know what you're doing.Don't take my word for it, though.
When I googled for what you asked to google, I found this list of sites running ASP.NET.
Costco - http://www.costco.com/
Crate & Barrel - http://www.crateandbarrel.com/
Home Shopping Network - http://www.hsn.com/
Buy.com - http://www.buy.com/
Dell - http://www.dell.com/

7-Eleven - http://www.7-eleven.com/
Carnival Cruise Lines - http://www.carnival.com/
L'Oreal - http://www.loreal.com/
The White House - http://www.whitehouse.gov/
Remax - http://www.remax.com/
Monster Jobs - http://www.monster.com/
USA Today - http://www.usatoday.com/
ComputerJobs.com - http://computerjobs.com/

Newegg http://newegg.com/
Geico http://geico.com/
Capital One http://capitalone.com/
Zecco http://zecco.com/Maybe you should tell those sites that
.NET is a unproven technology? Or will you try to argue that these are not huge enterprise apps? Just because you want something to be true(or maybe you were just karma whoring) doesn't make it true. C# is a better language than Java, though each one has it's strengths. And even conceding your point(I don't) that Java is faster, speed is not everything. Or we would all be coding in assembly or machine code. -
Going from Perl to Erlang, eh?
TFA more or less says that IMDB is switching from Perl to Erlang. So I looked at the link and here's what I got:
We are looking for developers with experience building web scale distributed systems. We are currently working in Perl but have plans to use Java, Erlang and any other language that we think will suit our purposes. We aren't looking for expertise in any of those, particularly, but we expect that you will be an expert in the systems you know. We do require that you be passionate about testing (unit, integration, fault-injection) and code quality. Experience with relational databases (Oracle, MySQL, etc), embedded databases (BerkeleyDB, CDB, MonetDB, etc) and Linux are a big plus.
I'll leave anyone to draw his own conclusions.

Re:Consulting Firm.
Are you trying to solve a problem or make money?
Both are fine with me.
However, $250K is low based on my personal experience doing exactly what the original poster asked. That's only $250/hr for 6 months. See the common rates http://www.ticker.computerjobs.com/ Be certain to say how Wireless can help the company become more efficient if properly secured, which you'll help them architect over the following 6 months. -
Re:Is MS looking for people?!?Actually, had you clicked on the link (on that same page) that says "See all jobs with Microsoft Corporation" and looked at the individual descriptions, you would have seen that they have posted more than 237 jobs right on that site alone!
Everybody, quick, put down Slashdot for just a moment, and get your resume over there!

Is MS looking for people?!?
Posted Microsoft jobs advertised on ComputerJobs
Gee, it doesn't look like they need that many people. And if they actually advertised, I'm sure there's plenty of us who'd be more than willing to relocate at our own expense to have a job.

1991 Jobs in Texas
I just checked computerjobs.com and found there are currently 1991 jobs in Texas. I remember when that number was as high as 23,000 before the economy nose dived. Whether it is, or is not, back in other areas, it most definitely is nowhere near back in IT hiring.

Re:Completely misses the point!
Ha ha, yeah. According to the advertising industry, men are completely unable to choose their own cough syrup. That always cracks me up. Perhaps it's just that my secret feminine over-the-counter-medication-fu allows me to choose wisely when ill.
But I feel obliged to politely point out that we're still earning (on average) only 92 cents on the dollar compared to men. And the gender-based salary discrepancy is even higher in high tech fields. And if anyone says women don't earn as much as men in high-tech fields because we're not as good, I will personally punch them in the face.
As far as I'm concerned, registering for the draft would only be fair... as long as you're all sure you WANT us in the military. A lot of guys are still pretty pissed about that, you know. -
Re:Brazil is the oddest place on the planet
There are two big problems in Brazil: corruption and distance between poor and rich.
While in US the minimum wage is more than US$900 per month, in Brazil it's around US$75 per month. But I, a J2EE developer, earn around US$2000 per month, while a US J2EE developer will earn around US$6000 per month ( average from this survey). In this situation the rate distance in US is about 6.7, where in Brazil is 26.7! This is the lead cause of crimes and poor quality of life in several places in Brazil.
The corruption issue is a bit worse. Most of politicians and judges in Brazil believe they have the right to be very rich, even if they have to steal from the people. Last month a countryside city with less than 50,000 people spent US$1,000,000 (IIRC) in furniture for the representatives, even with the city's hospitals lacking resources.
Even with these problems people here tend to be warm, gentle and hopeful for the future. It's a very strange, and sometimes unpleasant, place to live, but the future seems good (hey I'm still here ;) -
Move On? HardlyLook at the job postings on Monster or ComputerJobs.
Roughly half the jobs listed in Windows want at least some
.NET or C# experience. The majority of the others are J2EE/Java.This article is just more FUD. There is no doubt that
.NET, and ASP.NET in particular (aspx pages) is the future of software development on Windows - on Linux also, if you believe Mono... -
Worked for meI listed on Computerjobs in May. I had a great job in one week at a large company. This is not an advertisement, I assure you. It is simply a reminder not to leave any stone unturned; it could happen to you.
Of course, YMMV.
-
Not to be a troll but ...
are you kidding? 3 years of experience??? People straight out of college are getting jobs you should be able to find one. I only have about 4 1/2 years of experience, I was laid off 3 weeks ago and I have contract work to do and people calling me (probably about to accept a job) and my strong points are Perl and PHP.
Seriously if you know C and Java you have it made, you might have to relocate but there are hundreds software jobs out there. I'd suggest going to ComputerJobs.com or to Monster.
I'm not saying you shouldn't start your own company, I don't know anything about the local economy where you live but I'm going to say that with 3 years experience and your skills you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a job. -

Here's a multi-state jobs availability chart
If you go to Atlanta Geek's home page, someone has been tracking the number of job postings for various cities around the USA, with data taken from ComputerJobs.com. If this is reflective of the actual IT market (when in fact it's also reflective of third-party recruiter activity), it would appear that most cities have lost 20% of their jobs in the past month, but Boston! They've leaked 30%!

Bucket of Crisco
Get another job, I had the "celluar" allowance and went through an entire bucket of Crisco fighting over celluar bills. If they want you to have a phone get them to pay for it, otherwise checkout computerjobs.com or some other head hunter site.

Re:Hi. Help?
The trick is to be confident and realize the potential within yourself.
You are my exact mirror last year. :) I'm about to be 23, been doing this stuff since I was 8. I don't write code on the high-levels, however (I do perl, sh).
Last year I was making around $50K slaving for a start-up that had me hog-tied this way and that. I actually left for 2 weeks for an E-Commerce thing but found that I couldn't handle Perl full-time and crawled back.
Now I'm at a Fortune 500 (albeit bored, but I've got plenty of other opportunities I'm working on), and I make over $100k a year. True, I'm a contractor, but the salaried positions I'm looking at equal this amount.
It's all about realizing your talents and going out there with a "You want me, you can't live without me" attitude. I got lucky with a sorta-friend hooking me up with a contract where I learned just how useful I really was. I went from there to several other places and learned the same thing. Now I'm just trying to find the exact company for me to make my permanent home.
It's about confidence. You need to think of yourself as being a $80K+ per year employee, but you've just been waiting things out.
If you are as good as you say you are, you'll be on the top in no time. It just takes a little drive at first and it's all momentum from there.
Living next to a major city helps a LOT. hit Computerjobs.com and Monster.com and post your resume and skillset.
I went away from the traditional route of resumes and put my skills and ambitions first. See an example here
Life *does* get better than this.
