Re:Even More Money
Speaking of mobile devices - as long the option to change the default is still there, then this isn't a big deal. It's when, say, Microsoft makes a deal with Verizon to remove ALL search options on my Blackberry, leaving Bing as the ONLY option, then these sorts of deals become a serious annoyance.

Install the provider neutral Blackberry Firmware
The nice part about blackberries is you're not bound to use the phone provider's firmware. You can go to like the crackberry forums and grab the neutral firmware they post there and simply delete the vendors.xml file and install with the setup. The subby should use the search engine he/she so loves so much a bit more
:) and find alternatives. I never install the Verizon firmware. -
Re:Solution looking for a problem

Re:I'm one of them
Verizon unlocked the Storm's GPS about 5 months ago.
I'm not sure about that article, but AFAIK, it was always unlocked, app developers just needed to call the API differently so it took a while for it to get integrated.
I had unlocked GPS out-of-the-box (about February)... it was just GMaps which didn't use the GPS (which it does now).

Re:Umm... why the fuss?
Verizon is slated to release the BB 9630, aka the 'Tour' within the next month or 2. It's the BB 9530 Storm, but instead of a touchscreen, it goes back to the QWERTY keyboard. http://crackberry.com/blackberry-tour-spec-sheet-leaked

Re:Useful and missing Blackberry applications
Interestingly enough, Verizon, long known for sticking with ancient OS revisions for their Blackberries, just released 4.5.0.77 for the Curve (not sure about other models) yesterday. Apparently, that's the latest official OS for the Curve from RIM anyway.
Also, the forums at Crackberry.com have a section for each phone, and I believe that there is a sticky in each that tells the latest official OS from RIM, along with instructions on how to update your phone to that version - whether your provider has released it or not. Very handy, I've been running 4.5 on my 8330 since the day I got it back in August, even though Verizon was only on 4.2 until yesterday. -

Maybe ask in the Crackberry Forums (a Blackberry user site)
