Re:Damn
I use DCANet. They have a "don't ask don't tell" policy about running servers, Bittorrent, and the like. Residential service gets you 5 static IPs (assigned via DHCP based on your MAC address, so you don't have to worry about subnet and netmask insanity) and custom DNS PTR records are set if you ask nicely.
:-) They even have a outage mailing list to inform customers of scheduled maintenance, which is something I'd never expect to see happen from Comcast or Verizon.
I've been with them since 2004 and the only significant unscheduled outage I ever had was when there was a fiber cut once. Other than that, I have found them to be quite reliable and reasonable. -

Blind Drunk.10:49 [after two hours of drinking Vlad the Impaler] - 6th filtration dose, Ken - ?Wow? and ?goes down like water.? Fletcher - ?Quite Comfortable.? and I gave it a boring ?Good.?
The guy flipping you off in this picture then tells you that you are blind drunk and have no taste left. He's substituted gasoline without telling you.
I've gotten similar results from two hours of drinking. Fast food suddenly tastes good and vodka goes down like water. I have not tried gasoline and don't recommend it as it might just kill you. Still, I suspect it will do it's damage without you being able to appreciate all of the warnings your tounge, nose and other senses try to send your brain. If you are lucky, you vomit. It's really frightening when you wake up the next day and remember some of what you did.

Re:Better than a Volcano
I know something I wouldn't do, no matter how much vodka I drank, and that's shag the girl in TFA. What a fucking burglar's dog. Anyone drunk enough to want to bonk that moose should hope he isn't able to.

I dunno, I think I like the chick from Hanson better.

Re:Some calculations...
FWIW, their transcriptionist and/or minder is cuter yet, and might have two X chromosomes to rub together.

She is. I know the first thing I look for in a girl is a 5-'O-clock shadow.
That's a dude, dude. -
Some calculations...
Let's see:
Cheap vodka: $10 (US assumptions)
Name brand filter: $30
Total vodka purity: $40
As compared to: Good vodka - $34.99
Hrmm, I guess it probably made sense when they did the experiment.
Seriously though, it's neat to see hacks like this. It should also be noted that the chick in the middle of this picture is kinda cute. But does anyone know what the pills are in the bottom left corner of that picture? -
Re:Limited to 800x600?
in that case they should drop the shiny XP icon and replace it with the trusted win95 MyComputer icon.

Why DSL is the way to go...
... if it's available in your area. I have two DSL providers, DCAnet and, of course, Speakeasy. I love them both - they're always great to work with and are very responsive to my needs. I have two lines, a Covad and a Verizon, through DCA and one Covad line through Speakeasy. I've never once had a problem with either, and I've had these lines for a combined total of 5 line-years.
I routinely exceed what comcast calls a "reasonable" limit (30GB/month down and 7.5GB/month up, wasn't it?). Not only do I exceed that, I blow it away - never heard a peep out of either of them...
I have a theory about why Comcast is trying to choke off their Internet users. They recently had to double the downrate to compete with DSL, thinking that offering twice the downstream would make the extra expense worth it... However, they're also trying to ramp up their On-Demand movie service, which is far more profitable to them. So, it makes sense to try to reserve as much of their shared bandwidth as possible for movies rather than for Internet users. I would not be surprised in the least if they lowered those caps at some point, as there is a finite amount of information a single shared cable can carry...

Here's what I'm paying
Zip Code: 19010
Line 1: Covad: 384k/1.5M, /28 routed subnet, $89.95/mo
Line 2: Verizon: 384k/1.5M, /29 routed subnet, $64.95/mo
Line 3: Covad: 768k/1.5M, single static, $69.95/mo
Lines 1 and 2 provided by DCA.net, Line 3 by Speakeasy... -
My ISP loves me
I run several websites off of my three DSL connections. Two of the connections are with dca.net and the third is with speakeasy. They both know I run servers and even encourage it. So, ie-ap.org, bikephilly.org, rcmsg.ie-ap.org, lovemypets.org, and my ftp site consume gigabytes per day unimpeded.
When I signed up with speakeasy this week for the 1.5/768 on my third line, I asked if they had caps and the guy actually laughed out loud at the prospect...

Re:What about Verizon ?!?!
In my area Verizon already offers DSL, and you have the option of just using them as your line provider or as your full provider/ISP.
I chose the former, and have been using DCANet as my service provider and Verizon as my line provider for almost 3 years now with no bumps in the road and maybe a routing problem once a year that is fixed within 10 minutes of being reported, probably one of the best ISPs I've ever had....
Plus for my $40 a month, I get all static IPs and nothing filtered, everything allowed... unlike my cable modem where I coulndt' use my work VPN.....

Re:$100 hosting?
My mistake, not a full server. Just a cheapo host.
Still, a vhost can be relatively inexpensive. My ISP sells its services a la carte, and charges me $15 a month to host my web site. They also charge a fee to handle DNS, but they'll let you handle your own, which I do. Even without a static IP, a service like Granite Canyon's Public DNS Service will let you control the DNS records for your domain.
Owning and operating your own domain does not have to be prohibitively expensive.

Re:HehForget Hendrix! I'll be going after a Martin Atkins cast. Seeing as Cynthia is still persuing the casting business, she should be the one to get the rights and profit. In fact, I'd like to see her sue anyone else who tries to encroach on her particular form of replication (hey, more frivolous suits are listed here most every week).
BTW: if anyone needs a list of her existing ummm... specimens, a listing of names and dates is posted (no details on length or girth). She has 'members' from : Dead Kennedys, Revolting Cocks (figures), Pop Will Eat Itself, and the Ruttles.
