In other news, Lyndon LaRouche launched a lawsuit against Ralph Nader in federal court today, claiming that a 2008 Nader presidential campaign infringes on his trademark to "crackpot candidate."

"I'M the nutjob who always runs for President, no that tree-hugger!" rages LaRouche in a strong-worded press released issued earlier today. "The American public looks to ME as their butt of wisecracks and snide remarks come election time, and I'll be damned if some Ralphie-come-lately takes that away. I ruined Ross Perot; I'll ruin him, too!"

A Nader spokesperson refused to comment on the lawsuit except to say that the 'Unsafe at any Speed' plans to summon George Wallace from the grave as an expert witness should LaRouche's petition go to trial.

Congratulations: that's what you're supposed to do.

People seem to be missing the fact that domestic companies like ADV don't own the titles that they release; they license them. The Japanese companies demand their royalties. Add on to that the cost of dubbing the thing into English - recording studio time, actor's pay, etc. - paying somebody like Captions, Inc. to make the subtitles, the translator to translate it from Japanese in the first place, the cost of video production and DVD mastering... none of that stuff is cheap.

The typical anime DVD in Japan will run anywhere from $40 to $50 US for 3 episodes of programming. In other words, twice as much. And there's no MSRP in Japan, so no shopping around for online discounts; the price on the label is what you pay. Period.

And we're complaining $29.95 MSRP - typically $19.95 online - is too much?

If it is, then wait for a year or so when the ADVs and Geneons recoup their investment. Quite often they'll do a reissue of the same title, in a boxed set, for roughly half the original price. You don't see the record or film companies over here doing that.

No, that's wrong. He's blaming the _company_ who's selling the product, not those who made it (i.e. the kernel hackers). In Microsoft's case, it's one in the same, but that can't be said for Linux: there is no "Torvalds" distro. Linus is no more responsible for the Open Port Party that RedHat used to be any more than a Windows kernel hacker (if there is such a thing) could be blamed for the Active X Happy Hour that Bill and Steve foisted on a suffering public.
