Re:The missing ingredient is FUN
Yes, everything is relative. For example, imagine what ESR would give to have Levelord's or Hans Reiser's track record of concrete accomplishments! (Furthermore, say what you will about how Levelord spends his free time, but at least he has an attractive moustache which doesn't make him look like a child molester. Come on, PageRank, do your thing.) And neither Romero nor Levelord nor Reiser are confirmed cranks. See, John, the dude is right: the more you look, the more you find to be grateful for, because one man is minus-infinity on anyone's scale of personal relativism!
P.S. Feel free to lash out at your own favorite Slashdot pincushions, everybody! -
Re:It is a good location.
If you want to see what RPI was like in the 80's, take a look at the "samizdat classic" Not the Rensselaer Handbook . While not the most flattering review of undergraduate life, it does attempt to portrait the "real RPI" of twenty years ago (at least, as I and co author Tom White saw it).

Re:Application SoftwareGood luck getting any non-Microsoft software into school districts. At one time, Apple was the defacto king of educational computers, but in the last couple of years Microsoft has very successfully marketed their way into most middle and upper-middle class schools. My local elementary has "Microsoft nights" where parents are shown Microsoft products -- all pitched under the auspices of the local school district (McKinney ISD, with which I have recently had a few disagreements and which has been noted in Slashdot here).
It's unlikely that Linux or branded Linux systems would ever be permitted in this environment. I'll be that Microsoft has sold the MISD licenses that forbid alternative operating systems on any desktop or server in the district, all in exchange for a cheaper Windows license. Well, Linux costs nothing, and as a tax payer, that really fries my bacon when tax dollars are spent on more expensive products that don't really offer any services that the school district's rather restrictive IT policies allow in the classroom.
I wonder if another monopoly court case could be construed from this?

Re:What is wrong with these people?
I'd just like to say that, from personal experience, school districts want technical volunteers like you want cancer. Please visit this site to see a chronicle of my experiences volunteering at an upscale Texas school district.
-
Re:Protest web siteI don't believe my site was "slashdotted" today, not at all. There was a healthy surge in readers, of which I approve.
My site describes the treatment I received, as a parent, by the same people who have denied Sean any due process. Since I was (what, censured?) I have not volunteered for a single event at my daughter's school (it's been over two years) and I fully expect to NEVER be allowed to participate in her class activities again. It broke my heart to stop volunteering at my daughter's school; now the only voluteer work I do in McKinney is building computers for the local Baptist Church instead (the same church attended by the Superintendent).
Here is a picture of the MISD Superintendent at the ACT Academy taken late last year.

Re:Oh please ...Visit Not the McKinney Independent School District for another (damning) perspective on the MISD. The superintentdent (Dr. Anthony) is notorious for this kind of stuff.
BTW, local resident Linda Royer is running for the MISD school board and could use some more funds to wage a campaign against Anthony's #1 Choice (Robb). Mail me if you'd like to help.

Protest web siteI found this protest website against this bass-ackward "school" district.
It seems that interpersonal relations are not the only place this school has it's head on the wrong end of the digestive system.
And, the school's website is back up! Hit 'em again! Hit 'em again! Harder! Harder!
-
Re:Happens quite a bit.
In my experience with school officials, the word "No" comes up more often than any other. They don't have the power to make anything happen, just to stifle it. This is the mind set of what is, arguably, one of the more conservative institutions publicly funded in the US. As Jon Katz keeps reminding us, today's schools are more like prisons than institutions of higher learning.

Re:To the 0wn3rz go the ComSats
For those of you who would prefer a readable copy of Not the Rensselaer Handbook, one of the authors has actually converted it to HTML here.

Re:Disadvanatagaed? or advantaged?
Why do bureaucracies do this kind of non-sense? If I give a school district an "obsolete" computer, why does it have to be insured for anything? It's replacement cost is $0. I gave it to them. I'll get them another if some kid takes it (I hope he uses it). In my experience (see this link) school districts come up with N+1 excuses for preventing technical people from helping, because (IMHO) they don't understand the tools you can provide, and therefore they cannot "manage" them.
I think a better approach is to give computers directly to disadvantaged familes -- screw the bureaucrats at school districts. And these machines come with a no-nonsense guarantee: if they break, bring back the pieces and we'll find you another one. No cost. No questions. No hassles. If only NetZero supported Linux ... we could offer full Internet capabilities over any phone line at no cost (a 14.4 or 28.8 modem and SLIP).
It's worth noting that the only successful "geeks in the streets" organizations don't support school districts, but rather smaller, more flexible organizations. Be proactive -- help those in need, not bloated, top heavy school districts. -
Re:The greatest place to start
Take a look at Not the MISD Page for a rebuttal. The local administrators DON'T want your "help", because they don't understand the technology, and are afraid of computer saavy parents. What's worse
... the people in charge of the hardware are generally (putting this gently) UNEMPLOYABLE in the "Real World". They especially don't appreciate your presence. Take a hint and stay away, or do your own thing at the local community center.
