My general plan is to ignore that there are humans anywhere around. They usually do the wrong thing and so they've been taught to keep there hands off the entire thing.

I never use more than 50% of the UPSes rated capacity. It gets better run times out of them and stresses them less. Often the UPSes are the only remaining power at a place and the temperatures in these places are often into the 90s while the UPSes are still doing their thing. Less load means they can effectively withstand more heat before they reach the end of the batteries. Further, things that matter more are more apt to be on their own UPSes, so they last the longest (given similar sized UPSes).

I avoid APC UPSes, since several I've had them fail in odd and unexpected ways (in particular boiling batteries so they reach end-of-life way too early.) APC is hitting a price point, not a quality point and has been unfriendly to the OSS movement. I've had very good luck with Best and SOLA

If you run Unix (or FreeBSD or Linux or...) I suggest UPSD to baby sit your systems. Most of the sites I take care of are effectively 'lights out' (i.e. nobody that is a systems person is there regularly) and UPSD has served me well. Power fails at site X and UPSD emails me. I can then call (being up to a continent away) and manage the problem as need be. Don't forget to UPS the phone system.

I've found that most of the time the outages come in two possible groups. 0-30 minutes and 2.5hrs and more. I make sure that all of the 0-30 kind of events are fully protected. Without generators the 2.5 hr kinds are not practically covered by normal UPSes. If you're prone to lots of power failures, then go look at Home Power Magazine and in particular Trace Engineering systems. The theme is generate your own power 24/7 and be much more reliable as long as one does some minimal maintenance.

Finally, all the UPSes are tested annually for run times and the batteries are replaced at slightly longer intervals than the manuals suggest. Also be sure the that users have flashlights or other emergency lights that work. I test those lights too, since no one else gives a damn about emergency lighting.

They can make up (or change) laws. Any goverment can. But you seem to assume they have no laws allready.

According to some random web site google spat up they follow British Common Law and British Law of Contract. Which I beleve would make the GPL as valid there as in the UK.

Of corse they could change their minds, but so could any country. Even a democratic one. Ask anyone whose assets were frozen by the US goverment. Or whose bisness was nationalised in South America. You just have to ask yourself, do you trust Prince Roy?

Sealand exists because it was "captured" in 1967, before the UK extended the range of its offshore authority. As a result, a British judge ruled that the UK govt. had no authority on the "island". The previous business deals which have involved the prinicipality (it's a principality due to an odd regulation stating that no one may be convicted of treason for aiding a prince in gaining his land, much like the Hutt River Province in Australia) have been a little shady, and the platform was once attacked by helicoptors sent by a business associate of "Prince" Roy.

Sealand exists in a bizarre position: I don't think the UK considers it independent, but they cannot legally do a damn thing about it.

something more structured like C involves having to deal with too many complicated issues of programming theory and structure, and unless you're willing to sit through complicated stuff like X or Windows GUI coding, all you'll get is some boring text program.

There's a very easy library for graphics and sound under C. It's called Allegro, and it has the advantage of being available on most important platforms; it currently works on DOS, Win32, Eunuchs/X11 (even on non-Intel such as linuxppc), and BeOS. You don't have to wade through that WinAPI bullshit; Allegro is a simple layer around GDI or DirectX.

One thing I haven't seen so far (forgive me if I missed a post), is someone advising to simply ask the kids what they want to program. No one starts coding for the sake of coding, they want to create. Just ask them.... If they are into interactive web pages and like, suggest something like perl or python. If they want to make windows apps, maybe vb or delphi would be your best bet. If they like to write (as in words), maybe something like Inform (Interactive Fiction language-remember Infocom?) would be up there alley. It's the the difficulty/accesbility of the language that matters, it's the motivation and reasoning behind learning it that really makes the difference.

Better still: get them hooked on text-based adventure games, and get them a copy of the INFORM compiler used by Infocom.

Why? Because the code you write with it is object-orientated, compiled, and runs on a virtual machine (the "Z"-machine). This introduces some interesting ideas about compilation, emulation and so on - things which are fascinating, and also very tough from a beginner's viewpoint, so you can go on thinking about them for a long, long time...

Also because writing INFORM code means - usually - setting puzzles for other people to solve, which introduces a social element into the coding process from day 1: you have to think about how an "end-user" is going to interact with what you write, and you will be dealing with design issues at several different levels.

When they're not coding, they can be designing level maps, plotting adventures, finding ways to diagram puzzles and getting hopelessly lost in some of the most literate and witty adventure games ever written - games like CHRISTMINSTER and CURSES.

The programming language, the compiler, the "Z"-machine and the rudiments of game design are all generously documented, and it's all free!

The major wap phone in the UK at the moment is the Nokia 7110. This has a maximum limit on the size of compressed WML pages of just under 2k. This also applies to the Nokia WAP gateway. This places a major limit on the useability of WAP for anything other than small, funky apps. Certainly a decent rendering of Slashdot is beyond it. In any case, the 7110 is crap at WML, ignoring most of the text formatting tags and is very prone to crashing (Hmm, maybe a previous poster's comparison to Microsoft stands up even more so). Unfortunately though, as I say, it's the major WAP phone in the UK so we're going to be living with its legacy for a while yet.

There's a portable wrapper around much of DirectX. It's called Allegro. It supports nearly everything popular that runs on x86 (DOS, Windows, GNU/Linux, BeOS) and other hardware (the X11 version supports linux-ppc, Slolaris, HockeyPUX, AIX and Pains, etc.) but does not support Mac OS because none of the developers has a Mac to code on. And there are lots of games written for Allegro, including all of mine.

Something that linguists agree is fast, easy, and not redundant (this a huge problem for most languages, especially English).

Fast: A typical paragraph in English is generally up to 30% shorter than in other European languages.
Easy: I see your point there, but check out this reformed English, called Baanzish.
Redundant: The brain needs a lot of redundancy in language (it's somewhat of an error-correcting code); otherwise, noisy channels (try to talk in a subway?) will present too much interference for effective communication.

Hey, I bought a DC215 only last week.

It seems very nice. As well as gphoto, there's a nice command line tool on freshmeat called "digicam", which works beautifully with the camera.

I'm no expert -- all I can say is that the images look OK to me (sample).

These things eat batteries (I imagine all digital cameras do). I really need to buy a bigger compactflash card, too.

Predictions like those and These make some sense at the time based on current technology. They were often based on fantasy in their day. Personal robots didn't catch on due to many impractalities, starting with keeping them powered. The "Pushbutton Society" they predicted in the 50s and so forth have not been wholly realised, but some of the technologies have. PCs are also a part of the equation left out in the 50s, but they developed anyways!

While the conversion of ALL books seems ludicrious, MOST of them can be translated to machine code. A great deal of the books out there can be OCR-ed and formatted into a usable format and some stories are only available online.

Besides, the prediction of all books being available online are more limited by publishers than technology. Until you have some sort of cross-platform (fie on Microsoft!) book-reading solution where payments for material are made, you won't see everything online. This is more societal than anything else.

Since people were talking about this thing being similar to the cooling in the Dreamcast, I went and looked around for info on that.

Here is a nice page with a great picture of the Dreamcast cooling system.

If the Dreamcast liquid cooling system is similar to the one in the 3440CT, you can see why they might want it: it is flat. The 3440 itself is really, really thin. (There are pictures of it on Toshiba's site.)

In the UK, one of the conditions of having a Sky-Digital set top box is that you must connect it to a telephone line.

The stipulation is that it must been connected for the first year you own it, then you can do what you like with the box. If you were quick and got one last year when the free box deal started, before interactive adverts and rudimentary click-tracking were introduced, you should be in a postion to disconnect it from the phone line if you so desire.

Quite what information is transmitted back-to-base over this link is unclear, although it's a safe bet they're tracking their slave^W customers' viewing habits.

There are strong rumours that they are monitoring habits, but all they learn from me is:-
1. The phone line is connected to the internet most of the time.
2. As soon as the adverts start, I channel hop for three minutes, then come back to the programming.
Sky themselves are especially bad for putting adverts on at the same time each hour, and with a bit of practice, you can avoid most of them.
Considering that they have also joined forces with TIVO or replay, it's not unreasonable to fast forward through adverts in anything you might record. I think the possibility of banner ads during programming might be more of a concern, since at least one of their channels is trying to look like a webpage, but there is always junkbuster and I'm sure it will take account of these issues.

A couple of years ago, I ran into X-Files erotica on the web. (I was looking for something G-rated, I swear...) What was amazing was not that it existed, but rather the VOLUMES that did. People were totally obsessed with Mulder and Scully getting together. (X-Files, unlike most shows, did/does a great job at keeping the sexual tension high between Mulder and Scully without ever letting them cross the line.)

Hmm. for a good foundation in Crypto, I would recommend a look at PGP and Scramdisk (not only for the programs but for the information on the sites. In addition, the excellent Applied Cryptography is available online, as is the author's regular crypto newsletter CryptoGram.
I don't have much on the USA legal stuff (but that can be found on the above sites) but for the UK, currently fighting against one of the worst "Big Brother" Violation of the right to secrecy in communications bills known in the world, the UKCrypto discussion list archive would be worth a look...

Finally, here are further links to, for example, the crypto law survey which will give you an idea of the legality of Crypto in various countries.

Personally, I'd like to see this one stopped. Why? Because if this actually does anything, Chuck Schumer and the rest of the Washington Crowd will use it to obtain sweeping new powers. On the other hand, if it fails miserably, people can point out that the solutions to these types of things are technological, not legal.

Basically, giving the U.S. government an excuse to crack down on Internet freedom is not a useful way to protest things in my opinion. Besides, a Script-kiddie style DoS attack (they won't even have to obtain their own tools) which will be blamed on hackers isn't particularly 37337. An open-sourced package for a crappy OS is just an open-sourced package for a good OS that hasn't been ported yet...

And what about packages that simply cannot be ported? For example, there's fsdext2 -- an ext2 fs driver for Windows 9x. It is a very useful thing (it makes your Linux partition available to all applications with a drive letter, unlike Explore2fs/ltools/whatever), but it makes no sence to port it to a "good OS".(I'm assuming Slashdot's popular notions of "good OS" == "Linux/*BSD", and "crappy OS" == "Microsoft *".)

I've already notified the maintainer (who hasn't been actively developing fsdext2 for quite some time) about UFO.

(This was what we did for fun, besides playing games. Knocking each other's console of choice was great sport.) Instead it was he who got to be contemptuous, "Where are all the games?" he'd sneer, as he'd show me the latest Castlevania or Mega Man for his system, while I had to put up with stuff like Viking Child and extremely rare releases. I'd be incredulous, "Bbbutt, bbutt, my hardware is clearly superior! Hardware scaling and rotation, a color LCD, why is this happening..."

Everyone knows that 12 frames per second is wayyyyy too much information for our tiny little brains. Watching all that data stream by in such a short amount of time will make you blow up!

My God, this will be much worse then that Pokemon episode which made all those Japanese children go into seizures and convlulsions.
