Sonic - not a rumor this time!
In case you missed out on the press, Sonic was rumored for inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Melee (released for the Gamecube back in 2001-2002). Here is a quick rundown, with requisite pretty pictures.
Actually, the intriguing bit is whether or not it will be possible to have Sonic go Supersonic, a common theme in most Sonic games. To start the rumor mill going: the official Sonic-in-Smash-Bros. trailer ends with a quick glimpse at him in Supersonic mode.... -

Re:Great news.
There really is a massive amount of little strategic and technical gems hidden in that game. Me and my friends at my dorm here play it a lot, and the more we play the more we discover. Certain characters have better match-ups against other characters, on different levels. Also, there's a huge amount of technical skill that you can pick up, doing things like "wavedashing", or "short hopping an aerial attack then fast-falling into an L-cancel." A good list of techniques is here: http://ssbm.detstar.com/advancedmoves2/ , or of course the de facto standard advanced smasher's place: http://www.smashboards.com/ So basically, I'm buying a Revolution half because of the controller, and half because of the new Smash Bros.! I'm excited to hear they're going all out on it, what with a new office and all.

Re:How do you access?
Yes, the article itself is pretty low on details on how to access this debug menu, but after some googling, I found this (from http://ssbm.detstar.com/debug/):
If you have an Action Replay, Super Smash Bros. Melee already exists in your list of preset game codes... However, those SSBM codes will only work with SSBM version 1.0.
So, how do you figure out what version you have, to decide which codes to use? Take your Melee disk, and turn it over to the shiny side. Hold it directly in the light, and search for tiny text on the dark ring. You'll have to experiment by holding your disk at different angles in the light, until the text is visible.
Eventually, you should be able to find text that says "DOL-GALE-0-xx".The "xx" will actually be a number, which tells you which version you have. The -Det Erest messing around with textures - version numbers are below:
00: Version 1.0
01: Version 1.1
02: Version 1.2
Here are the codes to access the Debug Menu:
v1.0:

v1.1:

Re:nice publicityAs a game developer, sometimes you write something and the suits say you can't put it in, so you just comment out the call to activate it. It's a lot easier than pulling all the source and assets out of the game.
Yeah lots of games have stuff left in them in them that you can't get to without messing with the code. Knights of the Old Republic 2 had text from a different ending left in (which resulted in criticism the game was rushed), Goldeneye had some incomplete levels you would need a gameshark to get to. So I guess it's plausible Rockstar left this in unintentionally.
