Re:Interesting..we agree that the atmosphere makes an orbit much, much harder
Well I don't think so, since he's already done that once.

Hmmmm.... looks like we've seen that before
Check out the two websites in question: Voyager and the Virgin thingy
Doesn't the Global flyer look pretty much like the Voyager with a jet engine stuck on top? -
Article Summary is Wrong
This is not an attempt at the first flight around the world without refueling. If it is, We should check out Burt Rutan for alzheimer's. See Dick Rutan's Webpage for more info.

No, IDN RTFA!
Would these rules allow for something like a solar powered Voyager to win?!!! I would expect that the backers would be familiar with Rutan's work. We've already see plans for various forms of continually airbor UAVs for survelliance and communications relay.

xcor closer than armadillo
xcor has an actual working craft which has flown a number manned test flights already. It is being piloted by Dick Rutan. They have a working 1800lb thrust engine which exceeds anything armadillo has. They also already have a launch license.
It's a bit silly for carmack to say he doesnt think anyone else is closer than him. -
Family AffairWhat is interesting is that XCOR's last rocket propelled plane was flown by Dick Rutan, Burt Rutan's brother.
Burt Rutan's company Scaled Composites has the first license for their SpaceShipOne.

Re:Global Flyer
Dick Rutan did a similar flight with two pilots back in 1986 with Voyager.
Talk about similar designs... Burt Rutan designed Voyager. :) -
Re:Launch what? X Prize team for sure?Looking at their webpage i would guess that they got the licence for a test vehicle, so not the full scale model:
XCOR Aerospace has submitted a launch license application for an intermediate technology demonstration vehicle.
Interesting tidbit: they list Dick Rutan as their test pilot, who happens to be a brother of Burt. -

Dick's Next Trip?In 1986 Dick Rutan flew his "Voyager" around the world, non-stop, in 9 days. In 1997 he flew his Long-EZ around the world, with many stops, in 80-or-so days. Now with his EZ-Rocket maybe could now fly round the world, with refuelling stops, in (what?) a day?
Meanwhile, previous Long-EZ customer's will love this the Rocket-EZ. John Denver could've killed himself much quicker in one of these. And James Gleick could make another - high speed - attempt on his own life too.
Regards, Ralph.

Re:Some People Shouldn't Have Kids
Rutan (ROO-TAN) is a pretty famous name in the field current aviation. Him and his brother are building all sorts of crazy-kewl airplanes.
