Learn from your competitorsSeems like these guys could learn a thing or two from "large but independent" stations like Digitally Imported. DI provides free streams in Mp3, WMA, and AAC+, but also offers higher quality streams in the 3 mentioned formats for a fee.
DI can support up to 40 to 60 thousand listeners simultaneously during peak loads (thrus afternoon), and still make a profit.
DISCLAIMER: I worked for them previously

Re:Where's the FM tuner???
No MP3 manufacturer is going to be able to replace FM radio until their players have the ability to receieve internet radio streams via some kind of wireless net access.
I can already listen to Digitally Imported with my PDA at my local laundromat - but we're still a ways away from having fast network access available everywhere for internet radio. -
Re:Nobody owns anything anymore...The problem with the system is I can't own a damn thing anymore. There was a time if I wanted to tape something off TV, I would have used a VCR. Now people are paying a monthly fee for TiVo.\
No one is keeping you from using a VCR still. You still have the right to choose with your dollar. Just because Tivo charges a monthly description and cable charges an inordinate amount of money for their service does not mean you have to buy it. If VCR's are a bit archaic for you, there are DVD recorders that can record straight from TV
And it is not good enough to have a phone in the house, now everyone needs a cell phone. I had one employer ask me to update my file with my second phone number, a cell phone number. I did not have one. My boss gave me one hell of a look.
I feel your pain. I work at a university and sometimes I think I'm the only person under the age of 30 without a cell phone. I like the idea of being able to call someone from wherever I'm at and have one in case of an emergency, but not for $40 a month.
And take operating systems for example. There was a time that when I purchased a operating system, I could put it on any computer I owned. Now Microsoft wants me to call in and ask for permission to install Windows.
I agree, but that is Microsoft's EULA which is legally binding when you buy their software. Again, you can speak with your dollars.
It is not bad enough that they want $10 to see a movie, after half an hour of commericals (what is the point of paying $10 if they will force people to watch commercials anyways, isn't that just like TV?). In addition to the $10 ticket and forced viewing of commercials,
To be honest, virtually everyone I know actually enjoys the commercials before a movie. It's been my experience the movies will show one generic commercial (like Coke or something) and then show oodles of movie previews. People in love with movies always want to see the trailer for what is coming out so they know what they want to watch 3-9 months out from now.
And about the music industry.
The music industry is a bastion of poor business practices and I refuse to support them. My radio dial stays on NPR and my music at home always comes from http://www.digitallyimported.com/.
So, no, sharing is not theft. What is theft is what the corporations are doing to people.
Corporations and businesses have one job - to create profits for shareholders. They are obligated to do nothing else, as long as what they do is within the confines of the law. With that said, the only way corporations and other businesses can make money is by meeting the demand of the consumer. The consumer is the one demanding these products. As such, business will sell/license their goods or services at the price that believe will return the highest margin. If the consumers don't want the service or don't agree with the way a product is licensed or sold, then they will stop buying it and the product or service will cease to exist or will be sold/license difference.

24K? you must not love your music!
I pay monthly to subscribe to Digitally Imported Radio. I was a gold subscriber for a year. Then I tried a 2 day platinum trial account and was sold instantly. The Plarinum gives you a 160K stream and it sounds simply amazing. Compressed audio is fine for simple listening, but sounds terrible the louder you turn it up. Even at 128K. All the MP3s I make are at least 192K.

I hate shuffle, and I'll tell you why...
I listen to a lot of trance music. DJ sets, live mixes, mix discs and so on. Any track that is off *any* mix disc will have a cross-fade on either end of the track. You put two tracks from different mix discs end-to-end and you will hear two clashing snippets of other tracks as the next one starts playing. Sure I could go converting entire discs to just one audio file, but that doesn't make the file any more usable than an audio tape for finding stuff. I purposely rip discs as individual tracks so I can take advantage of the "random" access nature of computerized audio playback. This is how I build a playlist:
* load playlist with singles that don't have crossfades, and the odd full mix discs that actually are individual files
* use Winamp's (Options:Sort:)Randomize List option. It's like shuffle in its ability to randomize tracks, but you keep a linear playlist and can easily rearrange upcoming tracks
* continue loading playlist with mix discs that are broken down into indivual tracks
Failing that, I may also just listen to Digitally Imported or TranceSphere instead. ;-) -
Re:Not a diseaseAh, it's gladdening to hear that others share the exact same drawbacks at work as I do. I'm the same way with tasks; if I'm not careful, I'll rapidly switch between tasks until getting "stuck" on the most interesting or complex, leaving the simplier but often more important tasks to linger.
I also can't listen to music with lyrics (example: Gilbert & Sullivan) while working, I loose my concentration on the task at hand (UNIX administration). Thus, I tend to listen exclusively to trance, typically from Digitally Imported.
Meetings also tend to be unbearable, although I suspect most people find this to be the case.
:-) I will often figure out the outcome of the meeting within a few minutes of the start, and then having to sit there and listen to people rehash the same things over and over and over and...you get the idea. -
DI?I wonder if eventually my favorite MP3/RM/WMA internet stations will be ever be carried on satellite.
If Digitally Imported and all its channels are carried, I'll subscribe today!!

Re:Do we need another?
Give up Linux? Not really using your current distro? Perhaps you should try gentoo! Some people said "Do we really need another Linux distro", but gentoo people said yes, and thanks to that, running linux is now a dream!
And I'm sure you like whatever non-gentoo distro you use too.
These people who say why have more competition blow my mind. They are so eager to be a part of the Slashbot hate-everything bandwagon (flash haters, gentoo zealot haters, gentoo zealot hater haters, **IA h8rs, and even the reactionary slashbot haters) but then they forget to check in their brains. Oops.
"I want there to be only TWO online music distributors, darnit! That way it is less likely that I will find one that has music I like, and it will be more likely that I will get to pay more money, just like I get to pay $300 for my operating system."
Of course, if the ones carrying indy labels are forced out of the market, that would suck.
BTW, most of the music I listen to is from mp3.com. I want to hear trance, which isn't on any local radio stations (although I just discovered Digitally Imported which is sweet), but going to local music stores' listening booths sucks because it's physically inconvenient and selection is so limited, and I've had enough of buying blindly.

Internet Radio
Internet Radio is only OK.. My parents listen to NPR from Pittsburg in Ohio where they now live to get a show they otherwise wouldn't be able to. I found a few shoutcast stations that I like. Especially Digitally Imported. But I never listen to it live. I taped a few days worth of it and burned them onto mp3 cds. As a result, I can now listen to great techno music at work on my computer, out jogging on my portable mp3 cd player, in my car on my mp3 cd player, or at home with my dvd player that plays mp3 cds.

Pitchfork, RadioIO, DigitallyImported.
Pitchfork has interesting stuff about indie/alternative music. They also have sample songs of alternative bands. You can also listen to radioIO. Somewhat pretentious, but they do have good music and they have a "who's playing" applet, which lets you locate music you like. There is also digitally imported which has streams of trance/house/eurodance/classic music, and also sports a playing list for each stream.

www.digitallyimported.com
DI is a great site with a variaty of music styles. I have found a number of "new to me" artists and DJs here.
The web site has comment sections for discussing the current play list. The streamed mp3 format works great in Windows, Solaris, Linux, and Mac. -
Audio P2P running
I have seen that Digitally Imported has a audio P2P option from allcast.
I am not using it personally as I am listening to the shoutcast streams on my Audiotron, so I don't know if it's worth anything, but the idea is nice. -
Re:Ack, I've been there...
-Windows open: Fresh Air + Sunlight = GOOD!
I like a quiet mostly dark room myself, but frequent breaks to the outside are great!
-Swivel Chair/Titlty Chair: So you can move around some and 'stretch' out.
When I was in retail prison, I used to try to sell this chair all the time ("Wow, your 6yo girl's first homework setup? Try this chair! It'll, um, last her for life..."), because it's comfortable! If only it leaned backwards a little farther. Just don't let those silly stripey-shirted inquisitive helpful salesbots fool you: it already has the good fabric (might be nice in a black and dark green, though...).
-Music up: Radio or playlist, either way try to get a variety of songs/music you know.
Back when I had bandwidth, Digitally Imported would protect me. Now that those fee guidelines are in place, can it even push me down the stairs anymore?
:( (Sorry, long night...)-Coffee/Mountain Dew/Jolt/Bawls/Etc: 'nough said
Bzzt! Tea. Hot, high-quality green or herbal tea, such as ginger.
-Food: Good snacks that don't really drain you. For me, these include things like Cashews, Chex Party Mix, and Kettle Chips (if you haven't had these potato chips, SHAME ON YOU!). Avoid anything that is really sugar-rich though, as it'll give you that little boost, then kill ya and make you want to sleep. Wanting to sleep=bad code.
Just had that happen. I had a good 6hrs sleep before coming to work, which is usually plenty for me to make it through the night. I didn't feel like making anything, so I grabbed a can of SpaghettiOs. Big mistake. After consuming half the can of starch/sugar, I immediately passed out on the floor for 3hrs. (I work nights at a hotel, and it's allowed, but still.)
Sugar is poison in large quantities. Ever wonder why jellies and jams don't really go bad?
Avoid anything sugar-rich or massively starchy, period. It'll make you fat and kill your energy in general, plus for me it causes skin problems. Protein and some fat, mostly; that'll keep you energetic for the long haul, and you should be able to stay up longer without an unpleasant crash in the middle. (Just be sure to wash hands and face if you eat anything greasy, or you'll feel gross and get grease on the keyboard besides.) Try any of Morningstar's hot dogs or Boca's sausages (brats, italian sausages, etc); they're basically pure wheat/soy protein and they taste great.

P2P Internet Radio and Streaming MP3s
There are at least two peer to peer Internet radio networks: Streamer
and PeerCast.
You could also serve hot streaming mp3s with this very cool perl script
Or you could just bliss out to some great trance music ... as long as they can afford to keep going.

Try these...
I personally like the online store provided by Dragonfly Records. Dragonfly has a lot of REALLY good material in their store.
Also good is PsyShop.com, an online store where you can buy all sorts of stuff associated with Psychadelic types of electronic music. CDs, Shirts, 12-inchers, you name it.
I personally recommend to everybody that they check out the artists Prana, Shakta, and Transwave, but that's just because of my natural leanings towards psy and goa trance. Also worthwhile is DJ Tiesto, who was once regarded as the greatest Trance DJ of the year; although I forget which year that was. ;)
And, as somebody has suggested, DigitallyImported is one of the best Electronic Music streams available. They actually broadcast a variety of streams, including Trance (128k, 56k, 40k, 24k), Hard Trance (128k, 56k, 40k, 24k), Hard House (128k, 56k, 24k), and Eurodance (128k, 56k, 40k, 24k); they even stream classical music--which bothers me for some reason.
Anyhow, hope you find that information useful. -

Places to go, music to listend to
For starters, you are unfortunatly a little late when it comes to the internet radio stations that so often have good electronic music. The RIAA is in the middle of killing the free internet radio stations. Some of my favorite internet streams used to be over at SomaFM where among other music I was introduced to music from Tranquility Bass, Future Sounds of London, Aphex Twins and Orbital. I would prolly not have CD's by all these bands if it wasn't for da internet stream.
Not all streams have disappeared, Digitally Imported Radio is one of the finest that is still there. Offering Trance, hard-trance, Eurodance and hard-house. For more streams check out shoutcast a collection of online music streams.
To be introduced to Electronic music you should try to find which genres within electronic you like best. Some genres are (from mellow to really fast):
- Ambient
- Trance
- Down Tempo
- Trip Hop
- Acid Jazz
- Eurodance
- House
- Garage
Several of these genres are not per-se electronic but will contain lots of modern sound influences.
For the real electronic junkies there is also what is known as scene music. This will not appeal to most people out there, but please try it and check out the rest of the scene. -
Streaming audio
Maybe you'd want listening to online mp3 broadcasts... Almost all online radio stations have forums to discuss what's on air and such; pick up a station you like and you'll see what's playing, and what other listeners like. I suggest:
DigitallyImported (probably the most popular; trance, hard trance, house)
Massinova (eurodance / trance site in which users decide what will play next, with a moderation system for the tracks...)
SomaFM (oops, killed by CARP -- had good Drum'n'Bass)
Tag's Trance Trip (trance -- wait, off the air due to CARP)
XTC Radio (trance and prog house)
Philosomatika (goa and psytrance)
Bassdrive (drum'n'bass)
Xanu (Chillout and lounge) -
Digitally Imported
Digitally Imported, I think, is a good place to start learning about electronica in general. It's internet radio, so it does kind of require a broadband connection, however it lets you listen to various artists without spending time randomly downloading/pirating MP3s, and it gives you (what I consider to be) a relatively wide spectrum. Also, electronica stations are in abundance on Shoutcast, check them out for links and info.
Another personal favorite is Massinova, which is a pretty small webcast station. Try them out, I'm almost always listening if I'm in front of my PCs. -
A little more specific..
Electronic music is unbelievaly vast. Drum and bass, techno, trance, house, trip-hop, ambient, etc, etc. The list goes on and on.
You will probably fine trance to your liking, most people do. I'd HIGHLY reccommend di.fm, it's a European streaming site with 5 different streams at all sorts of rates, Trance, Eurodance, House, Hard House and Hard Trance. See what you like and what you don't, and buy from there. My personal favorites include:
Tall Paul (Clubbers Guide to Ibiza)
Paul Oakenfold
Paul Van Dyk (Live at Knebworth and Live at Home London are great)
Matt Harwick (Gatecrasher)
DJ Fuzion (Countdown to Wintergalactic)
For Sasha and Digweed, the San Fransisco Global Underground CDs are absolutely essential.
Check out tranceaddict for some listings as well. -
Re:the only options
Where can I get good non-riaa streaming techno? I listen to http://www.digitallyimported.com/
every day at work, and I love it. I even started saving streams, worried that it would shut down. I would even pay a subscription if it would keep them in business. Thou at 7 cents a song, about a buck an hour is quite steep, more than my cable bill a month. -
Not all is lost
It is sad that stations like Digitally Imported are quite possibly going to become an endangered species. They brought me music I'd never have encountered on FM radio, or most likely have been lucky enough to find on file sharing services. However, many public radio stations that offer streaming audio will remain, such as WQXR FM will likely remain, as they already pay royalties. So it is at least almost guaranteed that there will be some free, non-commercial radio in the internet's future. Now if only we could get NPR to pony up the cash for a few public, all-trance stations

Tape recorder
What I've started doing is recording internet music streams ( such as d-i etc. ) to tape overnight and playing them during my commute the next day. I'm sure you could do the same with CDR if you need the extra audio quality (I don't). That way, you get any channel you'd like. I've been pretty happy with this arrangement so far. Don't underestimate low-tech

TECHNO is not the same as electronica.
TECHNO is not a genre, it's a subgenre within electronic music as a whole. Unfortunately, most people consider any electronic music "techno". The use of "techno" is usually accompanied with the famous line of "How can you listen to this TECHNO stuff."
The fact that you've "been into the whole techno" thing demonstrates the usual laypersons' ineptitude in describing electronica.
Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music should straighten you out a little. While I don't like Ishkur's attitude that he can classify music better than anyone else, it does serve as a goode exposure to what's available in the electronic genre. Also, the music samples are the BOMB.
Techno is one of the major classes of electronic music along with breakbeat, house, jungle, and drum and bass.
As far as ambient, or illbient for that matter, being considered the same as downtempo and lowrecase, that's crazy.
I'd have to disagree with you that a lot of Moby's early works are really "lowercase." Most of his works are ambient and house(rave):
Moby - Ambient
Moby - Early Underground
Moby - Collected B-Sides
being three examples.
Autechre, IMHO, should be considered Intelligent Dance Music (IDM) and it's not very "lowercase". I thought my head was going to explode listening to it and processing all of the sounds.
On a final note, I'd use Shoutcast radio as a source of Internet Radio within the electronic genre. Highly Recommended:
Digitally Imported

I found out about this
When i went to my favorite station: http://www.digitallyimported.com to listen at work.
Techno gets me coding like a nutcase and it keeps me from having to buy the shove-it-down-your-gullet crap the big label DJs produce on CDs. They want $15-$20 for those remixes and that just plain sucks ass. The whole alternative music genre started because we were sick of the crapy top 40.
I will never pay for D&B, house, progressive house, breakbeats, trance or any other mixed music unless it's $2-$5 for the cost of burning the CD to the DJ. If they take away digital radio I'll just get the mp3s. If they take away my internet I'll just go to raves with a tape recorder. -
PlanetWeb is still missing an important feature...
It still, through numerous incarnations, has not come out with the ability to play streaming MP3's. I rarely, if ever, use my Dreamcast any more. Can't manage to burn a CD with Linux on it that'll actually boot, so I can't play with it for Linux. Got tired of the few games I had for it. I've burned a couple MP3 CDs using some of the free MP3 player software out there, which is handy, but the #1 thing I wish I could do on the DC is boot the damn thing off a CD, and play streaming music, whether off Digitally Imported or streaming off my own internal server. Then I wouldn't need to waste a Virgin WebPlayer just to play music in my living room.
Of course most of my collection is OGG now, anyway. How about some clever /. hacker get us a DreamCast streaming OGG player. I'll gladly pay for it.
