Re:Does this business model even make sense?
For that matter, why aren't there US network affiliates in Canada?
I wasn't aware that candians had the same low standards for television content that US audiences do.
I lived in Michigan and could sometimes catch canadian TV, which often had many things on which were much cooler than I could find on local stations. At least Tim Horton's has finally crossed the border, now Michganders can enjoy some real donuts! :9

Same old Crap as with Cable TV
Why the heck would I want to go onto the web to watch my local stations when I have a perfectly good IdiotBox to do that with?
This is the sort of technology which will obviously be favored by local broadcasting (which are still firmly rooted in a 1920's frame of mind), worried that their lose viewers to other broadcasters in other markets. What only seems fair if the locals suck and don't want to take the risk of changing content and the way to they provide it.
It would be too bad if local businesses get into webcasting and then beg the government to block my access to webcasts from outside my area. If this isn't a violation of my rights, it should be.

he troubling fact is that someone else, some faceless, nameless division of some company somewhere is the one who would get to decide for YOU what would be moral usages of their device. And that kind of large corperation[sic] hasn't been especially renouned[sic] recenetly[sic] for acting in the best interest of the consumer. (or anyone else but themselves, really...) If that were the case then Mice would be extremely tiny, but they're the same size they were 20+ years ago (recalling one which employed a magnetic field and grid on a large tablet.)
Computers aren't getting smaller either, you can just cram so much more in the same space (ATX form factor, etc.) Quantum changes, like the Eniac->PDP-11->PC->Palm are few and far between.

(Way OT) Re:Russia Today
The problem is that you and too many other people don't understand Russia. This is a country which never even flited with capitalism until now and is actually flourishing with the most fundamental, unregulated, unfettered capitalism at in its purist form. Only after Putin, or his successor, puts an enforced system of law in place will it resemble the west, then they can winge on about IP, monopolies, etc.
Fortunately, there are lots of good, honest, hardworking and intelligent people in Russian and something good will arise from the ashes. The signs are there if you can pierce the ugly pall american media casts over lands in central asia.

Some Logistics Contacts to try
Look for the Washington address at the bottom
TCL
Search some of these other things Google locates
The key is not that you are shipping a parcel, but that you need Logistical support, which is the business of moving goods from point to point and handling customs issues for you. This is what Logistics companies do best, hopefully you can find one which will help you with Small-Pack (a single parcel.)
Good luck.

Re:Bribes
Based on how everything else in Russia works, you probably just have to do a little lubrication of the machinery. I've never been a big fan of bribery, and I don't necessarily recommend it unless you know what you're doing, but that may be what is required to get that package through.
and how do you propose Pavel does this? The honor system? Staple a bunch of $10 bills to the box and put a note on the outside, "Please remove your bribe and pass this package of absolutely no value on to the next carrier"
I'm sure there are better ways. Many shippers have partners within other countries. You may have to do some research to find them, starting with the good old USPS. Also, check with airlines as they often will accept packages (your friend may have to go to the airport to pick it up) as air freight (pretty reasonable, too.)

Re:The unpopular view
don't know all the details of RAMBUS' claim, but if they were granted a reasonable and valid patent, then a whole lot of very smart lawyers are settling for a reason: RAMBUS just might be in the right here.
Right. You don't know all the details. Quite possibly NEC is going to play to Rambus and let Micron fight the war. Should Micron win NEC and all the dramurai will just stop paying royalties, possibly demand refunds. I'm sure Micron wouldn't be taking on Rambus if they didn't feel strongly that they have a case. What we really want to see is Rambus patents declared invalid. With this in mind, I think I'll go wander off and see what I can dig up on how Micron and Infineon are doing.

Re:Corporate PC Purchases Rule
Similar to the Blue affect of IBM. Although, looking back over the past 10 years, I'd say IBM has learned that they actually have to be smart and competitive, telling people "Just buy from us, we know what's good for you" doesn't work anymore. With Intel's stumbles of late, the sheen of invulnerablility is showing some tarnish. AMD needs to work on pushing their track record in the faces of those corporate buyers. Same applies to the SDRAM, RDRAM and DDR SDRAM front. If purchasing agents were made aware that all systems up to now have used SDRAM they'll cast a jaundiced eye at anything else, unless Intel is pushing it and they trust the Intel name and aegis.

Re:When do GHz chips get cheap (== under $500)?
More to the (OT) point, AMD is more responsible for Intel's dropping prices. They may regard AMD as an mere imitator, but they certainly are reacting to AMD, which speaks volumes.
DDR will be a good thing when we have a number of chipsets and motherboards to choose from. Fortunately for us, TaiwanInc. will have a number of these available by the end of the year, so we don't have to wait for Intel to "invent" it.
Vote Naked 2000 -
Reminds me of an old one...
A large black hole was discovered in Manchester yesterday. Authorities are looking into it.
(OT) My last interest in Black Holes was that the warping of space-time would be the method of point-to-point space travel. Unfortunately, if I were to synthesize a black hole in my kitchen the radiation would probably kill me. Any practical use for these things, other than fodder for nobel prizes?
Vote Naked 2000 -
And why would this be so?
Looks like this could spell big trouble for Intel & Rambus
I read yesterday that NEC is now caving to Rambus on IP. I haven't read anywhere that Intel isn't doing a DDR chipset. (840 IIRC) While I'm glad to see benches at last, I would dismiss neither Intel or Rambus, as both seem to be in a good position to take advantage of DDR. Please note as well that DDR motherboards and RAM won't be widely available for a couple months, yet. Plenty of time for Intel (who does sometimes hold the cards closer to their chest) to make hay, too.
Now if Infineon and Micron could just dent Rambus' IP claim we might have something to really celebrate.

Yeah, well, I used to actually wash (that's right wash) keyboards people spilled coffee into. I'd tear them appart right down to the little springs which push the keys back up and wash them, then dry with a towel and blowdryer. It never ceased to amuse me how a user could, with total poker face, tell me they hadn't been drinking any coffee near the keyboard, they had been sitting there all day and it just stopped. Then I'd hold up the keyboard and watch something like heavily creamed coffee drip out. Clearly the folks who investigated that house in Amityville need to know about this...

Insufficient Data
I've only had this keyboard for about 4 months. Not quite long enough to build up a sufficient layer of crud. Keyboards at home are decorated with the residue of any variety of greasy chips. Dots of pasta sauce decorate the keyboard, 4mm tape, cd drive, cpu and monitor. Uh.. hair, crumbs and stuff, which makes the crud puppy look like Martha Stewart, is tucked in between the keys. Keys don't often stick and I'm usually careful enough to spill liquid (coffee, soup, romulan noodles, etc.) on my clothes than accidentally clean out the crevices of the keyboard. Who knows, someday the world may come crashing down and all we'll have for food is keyboard soup. 8^)

AFAIK Hacking originated in the physics discipline.
In my 8bit days I probably did a bit of cracking (taking the protection/loader, etc. out of a commercial package) and hacking (adding my own special mods to get the package to behave, IMHO, rationally.)
I'm sure there's a grey enough line between there somewhere, particularly where Randal Shwartz is concerned.

Adventure games
I've probably played as many "adventure" games as Mr. OMM, but never referred to them as Adventure games. They were simply Text games (not same as screen games, like NetHack.) The incomprehensible nature of many of these, like his example of the moustached impersonator of the non-moustached man, and the non-obvious path of logic I hadn't often chalked up to the author being on acid, so much as the author/publisher trying to make a killing on Hint books.
I still think Text games have an audience, but not where authors expect someone to follow their non-obvious logic.
Example of non-obvious logic:
A small red-brick house stands nearby. A bed of colourful flowers grows around the outside with a birdfeeder and several garden gnomes tastefully set about. A driveway extends to the east with a mailbox, flag up, standing at the end.
There is a rock here.
>
Example of obvious logic:
A computer store with a large display window stands nearby. A Beowulf cluster of 1GHz Athlons is producing some impressive graphics on a gorgeous letterbox LCD display, while audio booms out of what must be a THX sound system behind the flimsy glass, making it shake. A riot is going on down the street, thus keeping the local constabulary occupied.
There is a shopping cart here.
There is a brick here.

Re:Frame rates
Actually a good point, motion picture and television (US) are pretty close to the same frame rates and it's nothing perceptible beyond that. More importantly: with that extra horse power I should be able to render more quality rather than going beyond 30 raster scans per second. Benchmarks are possibly attempting, by some skewed view, to demonstrate this. (more fps == better images at 30 fps)
I think we're hitting the end of the curve for this sort of thing, unless we zap out and buy the latest Phillips TFT wall display at 1.6 gazillion pixels X .8 gazillion pixels. Sure, that'd be cool, but then you'll need the memory, bus, etc. to deliver that much stuff to the card - or - [Please wait for graphics to be loaded into 3dZilla - 11 Sec. remaining]
