Re:the latest in a fine tradition of programming g
Yeah, when reading the summary Robot Odyssey was the first thing that came to mind. Apparently there is a Java reimplementation here (wonder how long until that is ported to Android).

Re:Robot Odyssey!
Check out DroidQuest.

Anyone remember Robot Odyssey?
Not an MECC game, but still quite educational in my formative years. There's a Java port called Droid Quest.

Robot Odyssey!
I learned programming, and loved it, playing a game on the Apple ][ called Robot Odyssey.
You program robots to help you solve puzzles by wiring digital logic components into circuits that control how the robot behaves. It's hardware programming, but the skills transfer nicely to software.
Man, that invisible-maze puzzle had me stuck for months.
There's a Java-based clone available. Be warned - it's addictive! -
Re:Is all the good educational software older?
Rocky's Boots was updated for the 8088 (I played it when I was a kid), and there was another similar game called Robot Odyssey. Robot Odyssey actually required you to build circuits inside robots to accomplish tasks. The game was phenomenal and, quite frankly, one of the hardest games I ever played as a child. The game was rebuilt in java as DroidQuest: http://droidquest.com/

Re:Games that teach computer logic
I loved Robot Odyssey and Rocky's Boots. I had it on the coco2 though and not on the Apple. However I recently found a java "remake" of Robot Odyssey online and it's been fun to replay it again without wrestling with an emulator:
It's called Droid Quest, download it today an relive your childhood

You don't even need an emulator! http://www.droidquest.com/

CoCo 2 and CoCo 3...Gosh, someone else who grew up with those. FWIW, there are a number of sites out there with emulators and images of the games. One of these days, I'll find a copy of Interbank incident and finally beat it...
Incidentally, I don't know if you got at all hooked on Robot Odyssey, but there's a free Java port of it called Droidquest out there. I know it brought back a lot of happy memories for me.

Droidquest^_^ This is actual a rehash of old gameplay with updated graphics (well, not even really that updated), but check out Droidquest. It's a Java remake of the old TLC game, Robot Odyssey. Basic gameplay is that you program 3 (eventually 4) robots to solve various puzzles using digital logic gates. The game was marketing as "for 8 and up," but the later levels are touching on topics that usually come up in college-level digital logic courses. If you really want a challenge, the author has included a super-secret 6th level with even harder puzzles that even he hasn't successfully completed yet. If you're unfamiliar with the tenets of digital logic, the game has a series of seven tutorials that take you from the very basics to advanced techniques like robot teamwork.
As of right now, the interface is kind of limited and the graphics are not wonderful. Thomas Foote wrote the game as a remake of the original, so the graphics and interface are almost entirely drawn from the original game, which came out in the 80's. However, he also has the complete source code of the game available for those who want to tinker with it. ^_^ It's a retro game that requires you to think and has open source. What's not to like?

Software isn't always forwards-compatible
I've run Robot Odyssey for DOS on my Duron 750MHz.
Short review? Don't bother. In the innovation lab, your batteries die in seconds.
The moral here is that software hasn't always been forwards compatible. It used to be very noticable in timing routines, running Dune 2 on a fast 386, or, god forbid, a 486.
(For the Robot Odyssey example, play DroidQuest instead. It's a Java port of RO.)
I expect to see a lot of similar problems with OSS software. Not because of timing routines, but because of unclean code. For those who are accustomed to writing 32-bit code, making and keeping that code 64-bit clean is going to be a concious effort. -
Gimme
GIJ.
I wish it was more complete... DroidQuest doesn't work on it (RH8).

Re:Teach 'em to be Geeks!
Whoops! Skip the mobygames.com link. They don't actually have the software (the perils of not deep searching).
Instead, go to http://www.droidquest.com for the Apple version + emulator, or for his freeware Java version.
