Re:Privacy Concerns Aside
>>>The solution is, don't use Google products.
I noticed when I switched to the latest versions of Opera and non-google Chromium, they use http://www.duckduckgo.com/ so that's what I use now. No more google except youtube (since I like to watch).

Re:Firefo 14 will encrypt searches
At this point, Google is the only search engine that will support encrypted searches
What about DuckDuckGo?
-
Re:All you need is one car.
Perhaps, though by 2032 "less than $25,000" would probably mean "less than $250,000", or "less than CNY159,350" if China decides to choke more than just rare earth supplies.

Re:designated driver
Psssst.... Autonomous transportion is already available and yes you can get a DUI using it.

And DuckDuckGo!

DuckDuckGO - it's not Google, it's a Govn't issue
DuckDuckGo.com is now my default search engine for exactly this reason. They simply don't keep historical search records that are identifyable to me. Of course, they too would have to legally comply with any government request, but their historical data is of little use.
While I trust Google to be as secure as can be reasonable, I do *not* trust the likes of the FBI (readup on National Security Letters), or other TLAs that decide they have a bee in their crotch and want to through their legal weight around for little reason.
With NSA's warrantless wiretapping laws fully protected now, I don't trust the government to honestly care about my privacy. I trust Google to Do The Right Thing (TM), but they're hands are tied when the government wants something. -
Re:Distrust
It takes an unreasonably large amount of technical prowess to actually eradicate all of Google's tendrils.
DuckDuckGo, NoScript, and OpenPGP?
What am I missing? A robots.txt file?
-
Re:Do they realise...
There's a well documented case of undercover police acting as agents provocateurs in Quebec City.
Their boots gave them away - as well as their behaviour. The other protesters noticed the boots were exactly the same as the police line the provocateurs were trying to provoke.
Some links can be found; CBC should have a fairly authoritative story on it, maybe here.

Re:Mobile will destroy Google?
How, exactly, does one do search in a mobile app, other than googling it?
On both my phone and computers, I use https://ixquick.com/ or https://duckduckgo.com/; two search providers that seem to actually give a shit about users' privacy.
-
Re:Another failed social project from Microsoft
What I find great about Microsoft is that they actually provide open public api to their search engine. It allows people and researchers to do stuff like this. It even allows new search engines. Google has nothing of the sort - in fact they block your access to their servers just after a few requests if you try to scrape the search results automatically.

Re:Why is the solution to every problem
Maybe you should research your points before posting. Here, I'll help: http://duckduckgo.com/?q=government+job+fallacy
The government cannot create jobs, period. They can take a job from one person and give it to another, thereby creating the illusion of creating jobs. Follow the money: It comes from customers buying things, as you seem to have figured out. But what happens if the government is going to "create jobs"? They have to either raise taxes, which decreases everyone's disposable income (so the buy less and put people out of work), or borrow, which creates debt. They've been opting for the latter lately, and in order to pay off that debt, either taxes would need to be raised to impossible levels, or 90% of government employees would have to be let go. By trying to get something for nothing they've dug a pretty big hole, and it might well be this economy's grave.

Correction: Try this.

Re:Is it just me
DuckDuckGo seems to, in general, return better results than Google has for me for awhile now. To me it feels like using Google in the early 2000s, actually, clean and generally bullshit-free.

Re:Google already doing this?
hmmmm DuckDuckGo
https://duckduckgo.com/We can also make Google slightly less evil
https ://encrypted.google.com/search?op=out&nfpr=1&pws=0&complete=0Bing however, lacks most url parameters, we must feed it cookies.

Re:Kettle, black, etc
And if he were to accept a position in the U.S. tomorrow, would that then make you the fucking liar?
Of course not. To paraphrase Babbage, I cannot even conceive of the mental confusion that would lead to that question.
If you're calling someone a liar who has not in fact lied, then that would in turn make you the liar. I would have thought that was pretty easily understood, but I'll try and spell things out for you a bit better from here on in.
Or is it just convenient to your argument to fling self righteous remarks about?
I don't think that word means whatever you seem to think it means.
'adjective confident of one's own righteousness, especially when smugly moralistic and intolerant of the opinions and behavior of others' - I think that describes both your original comment and your response to a T.
Seems you and politicians may have more in common than you think.
WTF does that even mean? Politicians are people. I have that in common with them, yes. No one that knows me would call me a lying power-seeking egotist, if that's your definition of politician.
Idiot.
It means that politicians are often self righteous as well, and many of them would probably be just as confused as yourself if anyone ever pointed it out to them. Coincidentally, I've read through a few of your posts, and I suspect it probably wouldn't be a stretch to find a few people who would call you a lying egotist - I'm not sure about the power seeking portion though, I really didn't want to read your drivel any further than I had to.
I think people like yourself should actually be forced to be involved in politics, much like required military service in other countries. Not so that you can see what politicians are really like - but so that you can see what people like YOU are like.
p.s., I like your new signature - you should keep it. -

Bing and DDG suck
I wrote a short story called "It's hard living in Jerusalem during the winter".
Search engines, can you please help people find it?Google: First result.
Bing: Not found - at least not in the first 250 results. Searching with quotes does help though.
DuckDuckGo: Miserable failure - even quotes don't help - and it IS supposed to use other search engines. So either Bing and DDG suck, or they just hate me personally. Either way, I'm not going to use any of them.

Re:Maybe /Maybe
Bing still fails the Santorum test...

Re:Holy self-reference!
Meant to reply to your post, but replied to the AC instead. Anyhow, there's always the DuckDuckGo architecture page if you want some additional information.
I use nginx for load balancing, proxy, and back end application serving tasks. Works great for all of the above.
-
Re:Holy self-reference!
Sigh. You could just go read the DuckDuckGo architecture page.

DuckDuckGo? It works. hat else is there to say?

DuckDuckGo
Seriously, DuckDuckGo has the friendliest privacy policy around. They don't track you or bubble you. They run a TOR exit enclave, and if you're already using TOR, you can reach their search engine without exiting the onion by using their hidden service.

DuckDuckGo uses Bing among other sources. So, apparently, you trust Google less than you trust MS.

Re:MegaUpload bust was highly successful
Market innovation, Megaupload wasn't busted because of piracy, they were busted because they wanted to go legit by offering artists a distribution platform with 90% profit *for the artists*. Some sources:

Re:Google search requires cookies now?
That's just Google being a bunch of arrogant assholes, as usual. I recommend using DuckDuckGo instead.

DuckDuckGo may be your friend.

Re:Buy?
Having said that Google's search has noticeably deteriorated over the last couple of years. I often have to hit the Nth page now to find stuff I'm looking for.
I switched to http://duckduckgo.com/ a few weeks ago. I find it is much better at returning actual sites instead the long form posts that mentioned questions, but lacked actual information past that.

Speaking of crimes. Have you told your kids how you get off killing innocent animals with your stupid guns? I hope one of your fellow hunting assholes blows up your fucking head with a

Re:*Stomps foot*
How do you define when a fucking asshole like you takes the life of an innocent animal just for fun? Wouldn't it be awesome if all your kids died due to an "accidental killing" because one of the assholes you go hunting with made a mistake and blew up their heads with a shotgun? I hope you die of the most painful cancer possible, you fucking piece of shit.

Re:When will they add...
I do think there's room for improvement. I'm not sure what it would look like, though. Getting average, non-technical users to make informed, well thought-out security decisions is very hard. On the other hand, taking the decision away from the user is wrong.
Maybe you can explain then why the Google idiots insist on security by obscurity and refuse to release the source code of the GMail, Maps, Market and Device Policy Apps. The latter is a fucking joke and can be tampered with trivially by anyone who has spent 5 minutes working with backsmali offering, in the end, next to none security at all.
Although I have to say that I'm not surprised considering what an incompetent asshole Andy Rubin is, let alone the biggest hypocrite after Vic Gundotra. It's amazing, in a very sad way, how much damage to the Google brand those two shitheads have done, only matched by Eric Schmidt.

Re:Blogger only - it seems
I would imagine that Google don't want users to just switch to other search engines.
This change (coupled with their bias towards google+ results) is probably going to push more users in that direction as they doubt the quality of the information resulting from a google search.
I've switched to using DuckDuckGo! and Ixquick about 6 months ago. They work perfectly.
-
Re:Missed the Boat
As a related aside - can anyone tell me if there's a way to get google to recognize you as country-agnostic? I still get localized information when I go there, even not signed on. I'd love to know if there were a way to get around that, so I get all the search results from every part of the globe....
Try Duck Duck Go, which is a very simple search engine along the lines of what Google used to be. They proudly proclaim the fact that they neither track you nor alter your search results based on your location or history.

Re:I really havent figured out "showrooming"
If it's a $1000 electronic item, you can easily save $100-200 by buying from Amazon.
I bought a high-end HDTV from a B&M store recently. The sales guy was able to offer me a discount in-person that was forbidden from advertising by the manufacturer, which more than made up for the sales tax. I also got free shipping from the store itself (not contracted/outsourced), which dovetails quite nicely into your next comment:
Why would you want to return an electronic product anyway? If you've done your research, you should get something you like, unless it breaks, but that's not that common with modern quality control
Plasma TVs are notorious for getting damaged in transit. You may not even see cracks until you turn it on. Getting the store to deliver it—and set it up—saves a lot of grief in the edge cases.
OTOH, I buy small-ticket items like CDs almost exclusively from Amazon. I can't preview music at most stores, but Amazon's 30-second previews and some !yt browsing let me try before I buy.
