DVHS Comparison
I, for one am happy at the prices shown, they sound MUCH less than what I am currently paying for DVHS HDTV movies, which are averaging $40, somtimes over $60 (http://www.dvhsmovie.com/movies/trailerpark.asp)

Watch a prerecorded HD movie TODAY
The only format in which you can buy prerecorded movies in 1080i and Dolby Digital 5.1 right now is - and I am not making this up - VHS. It ain't cheap, but it is available.

Re:Too late to matter
Start pressing HD discs of some sort already!
Will HD tapes do?

Re:Directly from Peter Jackson's mouth....
I wonder what he has in mind for "a really high definition version with the best possible picture quality"??
The DVD format only supports 720x480 resolution.. Not exactly high definition. Even the "Superbit" DVD's offer really diminishing returns.
The HD-DVD standards are starting to take shape.. maybe he'll have one of the first HD DVD releases.
Or, he could do a D-VHS release. Yes, it's VHS tape based.. yes, that sucks.. But, it is by far the best quality movie source available today. Full 1920x1080i, at 28Mbps (broadcast HDTV max's out at 19Mbps).
I have held off on buying a D-VHS recorder because of the relatively small movie selection, and lack of firewire port on satellite receivers to allow recording. But, a release of the LOTR trilogy might be enough reason to pick one up. -
Re:"TrustedTV(tm)Well, any display with a DVI/: HDCP (as developed by Intel), or HDMI connection, or IEEE 1394 (Firewire/iLink) with 5C.
Mitsubishi have Firewire, most new displays have DVI w/HDCP, and the DVD players that upconvert to HD resolutions are only output over their HDCP enabled DVI ports! Granted, at present HDCP is rather kludgy, have read articles on problems connecting with the latest boxes and displays. Not to mention the test channel on DirecTV that doesn't always work.
Also, 5C works, since you can't record a D-Theater movie (warning flash), to a computer with a firewire port, or use the VGA connector from the Samsung SIR-T165 firewire STB when playing a tape. Oh, you say that's not fair use, but, it's just a glorified VHS tape, so how robust is that? Are you not allowed to make a backup of your flimsy tape?
And, in the last year or so one of the cable companies in New York "accidentily" enabled 5C copy-never on their cable boxes.
DRM for HD is just getting started. Can't wait for the Broadcast Flag.
But, back to the article, hopefully Intel can get better yeilds since Hitachi and Mitsubishi have pulled their sets (ahh, can't find any links.) erik g

Way too slow to roll out. Don't buy DVHSNow you have to wait. I thought dvhs was going to sell but not now.
Is anyone else wondering what happened to American inovation? Is a blue recordable DVD player that hard to come up with ? I know that the guys at www.inphase.com have holographic storage working but i don't hear much about it
.this country has sold all its electronics businesses and now waits for DATED japanese technology. This blue DVD player is nothing revolutionary.

Re:This is actually major news to some peopleWhy won't they distribute high-def films? Not because there might not be a market for it, but because it's currently impossible.
It's not i>impossible. There is currently one system available that allows you to record HD and, more importantly, to distribute HD content. That is D-VHS. For a list of currently available HD movies, click here.

Obligatory Link
http://dvhsmovie.com/ has more info about D-VHS.
Is it still considered Karma-whoring when I'm already at my cap?
