Re:The Back and Forward arrows (KDE - vs. Longhorn
Even if they didn't take the png files straight out of Everaldo's tarballs, they're obviously ripping-off his whole style. Everything right down to the start button and taskbar are just screaming Crystal. Maybe this will finally silence all the "Linux is just a copy of M$" fanboys. It would appear the M$ is now not only copying Mac, but Linux's UI design as well.

Re:More about them at
Would it kill you to put anchor tags around a short word instead? If there's one thing I hate about slashdot (One? HA!) it's having to copy and paste links, and then hunt for the frigging space in the middle that slashdot added via the wraparound on the text box.
To be fair, your URLs were short enough to avoid this problem... but I still had to check the second one, just in case :(
But it's not hard -
Re:not surprised
* cheesy, stupid names
These abound within the opensource community. GNU anyone? How about K-everything or G-everything? Gnometris... Same Gnome. My god, you can't really single out Linspire here.
* raping debian's bandwidth
How? They have their own Click'n Run Repository. If users choose to use a Debian repository that's their perogative. You know, just like every other Linux user. I guess if you buy Linspire you can't play with the other Linux kids?
* taking much, not giving back anything
Let's see, they fund kde-look.org they've written several opensource apps, they pay everaldo. Yup, those lazy bastards. Just remember, Michael Roberts may be an ass, but he has already contributed more to Linux than you ever will.
* uninspired, copycat mentality So? Ever used Evolution or Kontact? How about rhythmbox or juk? Lots of copycatting happens. And you know what? It's necessary. There really is sometimes a best way to do things. You can't innovate every day. I don't see you bitching that KDE and Gnome use the desktop analogy. That was invented a Xerox-PARC! That's old shit! It just works.
* loudmouth
You got me there.
* no attention to security (everyone runs as root)
And there.
So only 2/6 or your points were really valid. Nice work though. Have you considered getting job writing FUD for MS or some other major corporation? -
Re:I'm not convinced by that PDF
Those are KDE's standard icons. They have been made by the great Everaldo specifically for the KDE project, and have been subsequently adopted by many projects (even some on Windows) because they are one of the best-looking, most-complete, and most-free icon sets out there. Everaldo was an employee of Conectiva when he started making the icon set, but Conectiva made the icons freely available.

Stupid OT rant..First though, before anyone starts jumping up and down about Linux on the desktop let me quote the last paragraph:
Fink said that he expects businesses to use Linux where employees only need a few applications, such as in a call center or support center where workers need to access only a database and e-mail.
That is not a recipe for pending [consumber] desktop dominance.
Now to go completely OT when are we going to LOSE TUX. He's cute, in sort of a geekily charming way. But he's the internation sysmbol for Linux!!?? We need something sexier to place on something as important (marketing wise) as a box (in the mall!!). At least use Everaldo's penguin! -

Linux compatability + Better branding...
Compatability layer? How about just pushing Linux compatability? How about making it something hardware marketing cronies will notice: a better Logo! If I see the original Tux logo one more time I'm going to lose it. Marketing people need something they feel adds value, why not throw them a decent icon?
We have never had some much potential interest as now. -
Re:This doesn't automatically mean higher performa
Its kind of funny, I'm reading a lot of comments like yours. Which is fine, of course. But there is a sort of big push right now for just this sort of thing on Linux desktops. Eye candy, it seems is underrated here?
As a user who has been using the Linux desktop for about 4 years now I'd have to say this is a very exciting project. You should take a look at kde-look to get an idea what types of eye candies are being kicked around. I've been using translucent aterms, Convectivea crystal icons and the Mosfet's KDE liquid module for quite a while now, I love it.
Btw, check out Karamba, its a new KDE extention that suports (fake) transparency, lots of fancy do-dads and themes. Beefs up the candy factor (and some functionality!). Might as well look good if your going to have to use it.
Last one! Check out Slicker. Its a collection of utilities which provide an alternative to KDE's kicker, and looks good. I don't know about you, but I got tired of looking at screen shots of OSX. -
Re:Don't know much but...
That penguin is part of Everaldo's icon theme "crystal" for KDE. You can find different variations of this icon theme both at his homepage and at kde-look.org.
I think there was also a "port" of his icon theme to gnome, but I can't find a link right this minute. -
Re:Clean Up the Icons
Actually, most the new KDE icons are made my everaldo, who is a professional artist. It really shows, because the new icons are one of the best icon sets I've ever seen. FWIW, it was ranked as a 'daily deviation' on DeviantArt. One of the internet's largest communities of professional and amateur artists.
Of course, my favorite icons are from KDE 1.x's kfm. -
Re:KDE alternatives (watch out, AC post)
kde-look.org
I really enjoy kde-look.org. It's one of the few sites that's devoted to a DE and gets updates regularly. The community is very active and it may even get more traffic than the dot.kde.org. The interface of the site if very good as well with sort by rank, up front previews, changelogs, search, comments per entry and everything else that you would miss from themes.org but in a very straitforward, untrusive format.
It's also been a cool place to watch Crystal/Keramik come to life.
I'm just waiting for somebody there to upload Bluecurve sources for Qt styles and GTK+ themage
