Re:Nice misleading title
well maybe they should re download their codecs then

These filters let you embed the following media types into Ogg streams:
* Most video streams but MPEG2 (Streams with format type VideoInfo or VideoInfo2)
* Most Audio streams but MPEG2 (Streams with format type WaveFormatEx)
Anyway Vorbis is the recommended audio format
* Text streams

Re:Ogg
Ogg Vorbis DirectShow Filter
Google is your friend.
Unless you have an old embarassing picture on the internet somewhere. Then Google sucks. -
Re:OT: Anyone know of an AVI/MPEG editor?
Most of the really good avi/mpg editors and filters for Windows are open source. Virtualdub as previously mentioned, but VirtualDubMod is the current version of the app. Avisynth is the perfect complement to Vdubmod, it acts as a frameserver giving you access to a plethera of filters. Both apps should have made it to the Open CD. There are howtos on both programs here and here. Both sites have PHPBB forums that offer support. Good luck, there is a pretty steep learning curve to AVISynth.

Re:Ogg & Andromeda
Expect to see an "update" or "security fix" for Media Player that messes with the association to always make it point to WMP whenever you start windows or log in...
Expect to see people a) installing Ogg Vorbis DirectShow filters and b) filling their blogs with extensive commentary regarding the lack of GUI usability of the music players, especially in regards to WMP =)
(I don't know if WMP can play icecast streams using the OggDS filter, but it seems like the logical component for that...)

Re:ogg
Does it support Ogg files in your playlist yet?
MS will never support ogg. Howver, you don't need MS for that. You can get Ogg Vorbis DirectShow Filters to play ogg in WMP. You can also get Ogg Quicktime Components that allows Ogg encoding and playback in all MacOS and Win32 apps that use Apple Quicktime. -
Re:ogg
It does not and it never will. Infact, I wont be surprised if they totally drop the support for MP3. MP3 encoding has been intentionally crippled to force the users to encode in WMA
Bullshit. WMP 9 only had MP3 encoding in the form of an addon. In WMP 10 it's there by default, and other than the lack of some bitrates, it's not crippled. And removing MP3 playback? What the hell?
By the way, my lil' brother said that he was playing ogg files on WMP 10 using a codec/plugin or something. I'll ask him where he got that, but googling returned this. -
Re:new! shiny! bloating and lacking!
Lacking Ogg support? You seriously expect them to bundle every 3rd party codec out there?
There is Ogg support, in the form of Tobias's Ogg DirectShow filter. The specs for DirectShow filters are pretty well known. Complaining that MS aren't producing a wrapper for a codec they didn't write is, well, a Real tatic

My Top N.
Besides what was stated in the news story, and what is grabbed on Windows Update...
Miranda
Lightweight ICQ/IM app with plugin support for IRC/Jabber/etc..
FilZip
Free zip, rar, etc... util
PuTTY
Best SSH client for windows, and it's free
WinSCP
SFTP/SCP Client, free
Crimson Editor
Text Editor / IDE, supports color-coding source code and such. Very handy.
Mozilla
FireFox is nice, but I need a decent mail app and I like Moz for that.
Media Player Classic
Best. App. Ever. As long as you've got the codec installed, this handy thing will play the media files for you. This includes QuickTime, RealPlayer, and even Flash movies.
Nimo Codec Pack
A compilation of video and audio codecs as well as stream switchers, extra directshow filters, and nifty bits. Rather than hunting down individual codecs for XviD, 3vix, OGG, etc... this pack does it all in one operation. -
Re:humptf, jobs is getting wrong again :P
Yes, I would say you are probably quite wrong about these "Hardcore APIs". How else would people be able to make Media Player Classic, a Matroska demuxer, an OGM demuxer and Ogg vorbis decoder, and a port of FFMpeg to allow the playing of DiVX 3/4/5 and XViD video? It seems to me that if Open Source projects can make DirectShow demuxers and decoders, then the APIs are not so "hardcore" and secretive. Real simply don't want their codecs to blend in with the other codecs. They want to "brand the experience" of playing a Real stream/file with their player.

Re:Ogg Icecast?
There is a DirectShow filter for Ogg Vorbis.
However, it is not OSS, if that matters to your Windows computing needs. -
Ogg DirectShow filter
For Media Player, Here. Also, plenty of third party players like Winamp and Foobar play ogg.

Re:While we're on the subject...
I just installed Winamp 3.0 because it supports Ogg files and I've been sorely disappointed. Can someone recommend a better Ogg player?
Winamp 2.8x or 2.9x is very nice. Better Ogg support than Winamp 3.
If you like Windows Media Player, try OggDS - it will add Ogg support to that.
There's also a plugin for Real Player in development, but I don't think anyone really uses that beyond watching RM streams. -
Re:But nobody knows about ogg.
It doesn't work out of the box but you can use media player if you install the OGG directshow filter.
-
Re:Are you kidding?
I wonder if they'll play Ogg Vorbis and my DivX;) files
...
HA HA! HOO HOO HOO!
Laugh at this. Oggs play flawlessly on windows media player. -
Re:What about Windows Media Player?Yes.
This is all you need.
-
Re:CDex
Be sure to include OggDS so they can play their
.ogg files in Windows Media Player (yes I know "everwicked.com" looks bad, google for oggds if you don't believe the link) -
The Unofficial Virtualdub Support Forums
VirtualDub is in my opinion the best application of its kind, commercial or otherwise. I use it on a daily basis, and it gives me precise and total control over my video processing. Not to mention the unbelievable assembly-optimized speed! VirtualDub is truly the Photoshop of video capture and linear editing.
Those interested in VirtualDub might want to check out the new Unofficial Virtualdub Support Forums. They're a good place to get tips and help if you're just getting started with VirtualDub. Even though they're not "official" VirtualDub forums, VirtualDub author Avery Lee does drop by every once in a while.

Re:So don't use WMP
The easy solution here for people who like WMP but dislike DRM is to use
.ogg and and get the WMP plugin. -
Re:No WMP support? Check out OggDS...
Well here's the answer to you problem:
Check out the OggDS project, their filters work fine. -
Re:Change?Which is simply stupid as windows (what most ppl use) still determines the file-type by the extension.
I don't want to open my video-files with winamp neither do I want to listen mp3s with bsplayer
There's a good reason that the current implementation to include video-streams in
.ogg-files uses the extension .ogm -

A little dissappointment in a great improvement
This is great. Quicktime should now be able to play XviD and DivX video. XviD especially. That's nice.
I was really hoping Apple would move more towards Free formats, however. AAC has good quality, but it's a nightmare of licensing restrictions. It looks like I'll still have to go to the QuickTime Components Project for Ogg Vorbis and exa-mozilla MNG support. All of my music is in Vorbis, and my movies convereted to OGM from AVI and MOV containers. OGM is a really nice container. No sync or seek problems at all. You can embed XML streams, for whatever purpose you'd like.
Even more importantly, QuickTime still doesn't have a lossless audio compression codec. Some FLAC would be nice. It really looks like FLAC might be moving closer to the Ogg project.
I mean, hey, unless Apple is going to make a car stereo system, this is probably the best component to plug into an OS X "digital hub." It does FLAC, with the new firmware.
Still, the ability to play XviD (valid MPEG-4 video) is a great step in the right direction. Kudos.

Re:Doom III video
Download the Nimo codec pack here, and you won't have this problem.

XviD as alternative, Ogg Tarkin in the future
The problem with Ogg Tarkin it is still pretty much an experiment, using techniques which is way ahead of its time. 3d wavelets haven't been heard of in any other standard which are under development.
XviD, however, exists today. It is a fully GPL'ed MPEG4 codec. However, it cannot exist legally in any form other than an experiment because the MPEG4 license still has to be paid for in order to use XviD. XviD, like LAME, will mostly exist as CVS sourcecodes under guise as an experiment, with many rogue sites around the world providing binaries (usually with automated daily compiling).
Personally, I wouldn't count on the quality of VP4 being anything earthshattering. Tests of VP3 quite clearly shows that it is behind DivX3, DivX4 and XviD in terms of quality, so something has to really shape up. This might probably be due to a lack of 2-pass VBR encoding feature in VP3. Meanwhile I will just continue to encode my rips in XviD, encode the audio with Vorbis and mux them together into an Ogg container. If VP4 or VP5 really turns out to be good enough, I would probably try to find a way to mux that video stream into the Ogg container too.
