Re:Self encrypting hard drives are WORSE!
> No one has "the key for the drive," it's generated by the drive on the fly.
Well, who knows? I mean, here's this:
http://www.extremetech.com/com...
Ok, lets look at some of this text:
"Passport drives that use the USB bridge for encryption rely on either AES-128 or AES-256 to create an encryption key. The researchers refer to this as the DEK (Data Encryption Key). The DEK is set at the factory (all of the drives tested used a 256-bit DEK). The user is then allowed to set an individual password, called the KEK. The factory-set DEK is itself protected by a static hash value, common to all WD Passport drives, called the KEK8. The KEK8 is hard-coded into the firmware of every drive. once you’ve cracked one WD Passport, you’ve cracked the DEK on every Passport. "
Ok! So, this this is crapping on the fact that once you have cracked the "KEK8" (kek!), then you can use that to get the DEK on any drive. Once you have the DEK, you can decrypt the data.
Now, pretend that they didn't fuck this up (which they did), but instead had a unique KEK8 on every drive. This vulnerability wouldn't exist then, and presumably all these articles would not have happened...
But...
The DEK is still HARDCODED. It is, absolutely, the key to the drive, and it is, absolutely, set at the factory. Now, why wouldn't they keep this little 32 bit value? You know, in case.
So, here's one drive type, from a major manufacturer, who generates the DEKs at factory, one for each drive, and they never ever change.
At no point does the drive generate a new encryption key with the password you supply- the DEK is constant for the life of the drive.

Yay, Apple
Important to understand that due to Apple's restrictions, this is not a port of the Gecko engine to iOS. It simply embeds a Safari's UIWebView into Firefox's 'skin'. Same goes for Chrome on iOS. Furthermore, Apple uses unexposed JavaScript optimizations to make Safari faster and doesn't allow those same optimizations in a UIWebView embedded in third party apps. So, unfortunately, Safari will always be the fastest browser on iOS. Yay, Apple. http://www.extremetech.com/mob... http://www.engadget.com/2011/0...

Not even close
This is just a particular benchmark that happens to run entirely in the GPU.
Just because its low power does not means it have the same performance.
In performance per watt, Intel and ARM are mostly the same .

Re:Sigh
"Is this the sort of thing that the EU could override?"
Yes, that's why the morons want out.
Also, by definition, no encryption is unbreakable, you just need a few thousand years to crack it.
Or the right algorithms, the right computing power and encryption that is regulated to be limited to a certain level? I am sure Interpol or various intelligence agencies could push to have the right tools?
The problem with what the British government is asking is that it just takes one slip for the backdoor to be left wide open (see TSA security keys) and anyone who really cares about protecting their stuff and understands what they are doing probably will just encrypt their stuff with other encryption tools, that don't follow the rules. In the end what they are asking for only burns the general public.
The other thing is to compare decryption time to Moore's Law and thus estimating what sort of encryption level is needed for a given point in time (see here)

Re:A friggen video driver...
It's coming soon: http://www.extremetech.com/gam...
-
Re:But does it have an email client?
nVidia, for their sins, at least have decent and timely driver updates.
Which they're going to release less often unless you give them an email address:
In the future, only GeForce owners who both install GeForce Experience and register the service by providing Nvidia with an email address will have access to Game-Ready driver downloads, which will be pushed exclusively through GFE. That doesn’t mean you won’t be able to download a driver from Nvidia.com — it just means that the drivers on the website will be updated periodically, not on a per-release basis. Nvidia has stated that it will push a new driver through its website at least once a quarter, but it hasn’t ironed out the exact timing details yet.

Re:a good feature is pointy-hair boss territory no
What secret? I'm perfectly happy to stand behind my comments.
You're trying to deflect the argument with a non-sequitur. Your original, highly antagonistic and accusatory post, that the original commenter was literally a paid shill for Apple, was based on you being unable to comprehend a basic piece of English language.
For example, here is a piece from the verge using the same turn of phrase: http://www.theverge.com/2015/9...
Here's Cnet talking about Windows 10 using the same phrase structure in a video: http://www.cnet.com/videos/bes...
Here's Extreme Tech using the same turn of phrase to discuss the iPhone 6: http://www.extremetech.com/mob...
Like I said, it was a pretty basic construction that is used frequently in common English, especially when paired with a qualifier as it was in the original poster's comment.
You either deliberately took the comment out of context to try and claim he was a shill or you just didn't understand the phrase. Either way you were wrong and have been trying to twist in the wind to try and bluster your way out of the argument. There's no way out though - your original comment was plain wrong.

Re:Ugh
Ubuntu came along and managed to make an installer that really worked, and a casual user could pop into a CD drive and install without any command-line intervention. The rest was history.
Well, sort of. Ubuntu certainly got a lot closer to that sort of experience, but it wasn't a decade ago. I still tried installing it on stock computers from major manufacturers 5 years ago and would have to go through command line hoops to get some stuff working.
Mint pulled ahead of Ubuntu around this time because (at least in my experience) it was even more focused on the casual user experience. Even when it got the hardware right, Ubuntu presented you with broken media plugins and such. Mint just focused on a polished product, and it didn't hesitate to use proprietary drivers/plugins to make things work when the open-source versions still weren't stable. While giving up some of the idealistic "purity" of Ubuntu, Mint made setup easier and more stable... which most desktop/laptop computer users want.
The whole reason Mint is so popular now is because of Unity; before that, Mint was a tiny derivative of Ubuntu, but then Unity and Gnome3 both came out and pissed everyone off, and Mint launched two projects that were Gnome2 derivatives, and tons of users switched from Ubuntu to Mint in response.
Mint wasn't exactly a "tiny derivative of Ubuntu" before Unity. It's always difficult to estimate these things, but the data of page hits over at Distrowatch puts Mint in the #3 spot of all Linux distros in 2008-2010 (pre-Unity). This analysis written in 2010 shows Mint as the rising star of the newer distros. Here's another page from early 2010 asking whether Mint had finally "killed distrohopping."
So, Mint was definitely having a meteoric rise BEFORE Unity. Unity was just the final thing that dethroned Ubuntu from the top distro spot when a lot of users abandoned Ubuntu. But many Linux users had already figured out that Mint was a lot easier and made the switch in the years before.

Re:Because , you know, jobs.
Medical devices have gone under the guise of "security by obscurity" for far too long. They have no standards. They are plugged into the network without any worry at all to what could happen. Insulin pumps are terrible at this. Even Dick Cheney had to have special consideration taken for his pacemaker, since the technology is so bad. It isn't just device makers. In general most don't give a shit about security. From banking "apps" to healthcare "apps" - security is generally the last checkbox checked before shipping. It isn't a core tenet of technology for companies, it is feature you may or may not get to. Until there are actual penalties for ignoring basic information security practices, no one will waste time (aka money) securing things they "don't have to."
Because if the government actually created security standards and enforced them, that would cost Merican jobs due to all the over-regulation. Best not to think about how creating standards would cost the taxpayer, either. Govment has no business interfering in the private sector.

What they fail to recognize is that software support for iOS devices stops the moment Apple stops selling the device (even when carriers may continue selling them for up to a year).

Re:What are you really asking?
I for one would like to see a historic timeline of absolute numbers for CPUs, memory, and mass storage. But that is not so easy to do. I have found little snippets here and there on Wikipedia, but not even a single master list of CPUs, let alone more hardware. There are master lists of CPU benchmarks but not spanning generations and radically different CPU sizes obviously. Here's DDR3 RAM: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... DDR4, not really there in Wikipedia, though there are some articles that talk around the subject: http://www.extremetech.com/ext... A discussion of the LINPACK benchmark: http://www.netlib.org/utk/peop... History of hard drives, plenty of data but not complete and not tabular: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... If you know where to get tables of the raw data without an enormous amount of work, I'd like to see it.

You're 'happy' being illogical & stupid?

Inefficient: Hosts @ 3-11mb w/ current data & does things adblock variants can't & U RAN FROM IT http://apple.slashdot.org/comm... ).
UBlock uses 63++ MB & AdBlock = 128mb++ -> http://www.ghacks.net/2014/06/...

"which blocks more ads? Answer: uBlock/Adblock" by andymadigan (792996) on Sunday June 14, 2015 @12:04AM (#49907001)
WRONG - "Almost ALL Ads Blocked"'s PAID NOT TO by default-> http://techcrunch.com/2013/07/...
&
ABP too http://finance.yahoo.com/news/...
UBlock/Adblock = far less efficient on CPU & RAM (added messagepassing, SLOW usermode vs. hosts in kernelmode) & NEITHER does a fraction of what hosts do in more speed, security, reliability, & anonymity.

Re:Wow, so much effort
I can't really argue the point because I have not personally tested lunar samples or performed fusion experiments.
That said, I have read *many* articles in popular press concerning the relative abundance of lunar He3 and its benefits as a fuel. E.g. http://www.extremetech.com/ext...
I'll take your points and these articles with a grain of salt. -
Re:Hardware Access
Not only that, but it does not affect most phones with lollipop on it. It only works on phones that allow copy and paste from the emergency dialer (most do not) only then is it vulnerable.
http://www.extremetech.com/mob...
I'm guessing that since I've set mine up so that the phone needs to be unlocked to access the camera, then I should be safe as well.

And the confusion goes on...
4k and UltraHD are not the same format!
http://www.extremetech.com/ext...(Digital Cinema Initiative) 4k resolution means 4*1024=4096 columns, and generally 2*1080=2160 lines (with a resulting aspect ratio of ~17:9). It has been used for several years in movie projectors.
UHD-1 means 3840x2160 (16:9), which is 4 times the "Full HD" of 1920x1080 (or, as it's often abbreviated, 1080p, with 1080 for the number of lines, and p for progressive, 16:9 ratio implied)
(While there's also UHD-2, which is 4 times UHD-1 at the gigantic 7680x4320.)Most screens sold as "4k" are in fact only "UHD-1", except some specific ones, generally used for very high-end video editing, now usually advertised as "True 4k" (which includes a larger color gamut, among other things).
There's also an issue that if you run at 4096x2160, 60Hz, 12-bit JPEG2000 colors, the overwhelming majority of HDMI and DisplayPort cables won't be able to carry the signal due to insufficient bandwidth (it would seem that some monitors can use two cables as a workaround).

Re:That was easy
Given the way things are going with wine and for openGL, we could be there already if it wasn't for generally abysmal support for linux drivers. I think Valve pointing out "hey, halflife runs equally well on linux when you freakin support it!" is about the only chance we have of having reasonably up to date linux gaming support in the future.
