Re:Holy cow I'm torn!
My understanding is that you can't sue someone else for breaking copyright unless you are the copyright owner, or are authorized by the copyright owner.
My understanding is that you don't know who owns the copyright for a game developed and published by a defunct company; somebody could have bought up a whole bunch of copyrights on old games and be waiting in the wings to make an example of somebody. My understanding is also that for criminal infringements of copyright, the owner doesn't necessarily have to press charges in order for the U.S. Department of (in)Justice to act on an infringement case.

Re:What I don't understand...
Why did they keep mostly G4? Am I the only one who believes that TechTV was several orders of magnitude in higher quality than G4? I mean, to me it wasn't even a contest! G4 looked like it was being run out of some 70's revivalist's basement!
It may have been several orders of magnitude "better", but the Comcast-backed G4 seems to have had several orders of magnitude "more money". Surely many noticed TechTV's bi-monthly appearances on FC. And since it was G4 that acquired TechTV, they win, which is why you see all production moving to Los Angeles (yeah, that hotbed of technology), TechTV shows and personalities (and surely staffers, if any were kept) getting demoted, etc. (life-lesson I've learned twice: when your company is bought out, always leave immediately)
Are they too vain to understand that their shows suck? Doesn't matter, as long as they have money and are willing to cut more checks.
Prediction: the awkward "G4TechTV" name is only a short-term ploy to try to lure the few TechTV viewers. In a year, it'll just be "G4" again, with few if any of the TechTV shows (e.g., they might keep "Anime Unleashed" only so long as they have broadcast rights to the various shows... I'd be very surprised if they renewed them, unless they did the really stupid thing and got the rights to anime based on video games, most of which are awful).
Understanding the fact that any remotely intelligent video game player would rather play games than watch bad shows about games is left to the reader.

Re:Hello? Microsoft?
They're the ones that banned a bunch of songs from their huge army of radio stations after 9/11.
Like:- Van Halen "Jump"
- Peter Gabriel "When You're Falling"
- Cat Stevens "Peace Train"

I love the idea, but . . .
. . . how do we vet the legitimacy of the information posted?
The article was much too short to provide detail, but the one concern I have is that posting reports of suspicious government activity doesn't guarantee its truth. Will there be some type of mechanism that will allow peer review (just like /. or kuro5hin) to determine an item's validity? Otherwise, it just becomes another rumour mill a la F---ed Company, of little value to anyone except the tin-foil hat crowd.

Browser plugin?
Companies that base business plans around browser plug-ins usually end up here. Maybe it stands for "we need Funding."

If I wanted incorrect facts, innuendo, typos and the real dirt on the DOT CONs, I'll go to www.f---edcompany.com and save my $$$.

Re:Austin Airportbut because of the
.com fallout, they started charging like $6.95 a day or somethingNo, that's because it was a "trial period" by Wayport. There was at least one other company (MobileStar) providing 802.11b, but they went FC a few months back. Both of them had a login screen that totally fucked up my browser cache (or something) such that it kept trying to access their stupid login server whenever I tried to go to my home page.

this will help FC
the feverish oversugared lawyers at PrintCafe are trying to sue our favorite dotbomb news site to get real names of
.. "Ex-DLJ", "sucky-me", and "idiot". No joke. Seems they posted some stuff that printcafe no like, and therefore they're trying to get FC's nonexistant posting logs. -
Yay!
I guess that Pud at F---ed'd Company doesn't have anything to worry about anymore!

Jeremi - Don't wonder too much
Jeremi - Don't wonder too much. The Internet is not TV or the movies. Sure, MSNBC, AOLTIMEWARNERCNN, DISNEYABC, and the ilk may rate themselves. But don't expect f---edcompany.com [f---edcompany.com] or stileproject.com [stileproject.com] to sign up. So, what good is a rating system?

Caveat emptor: Excite@Home
Plazm writes: "C|net has a story (printer friendly version, of course) that just cropped up this morning about Excite@Home being in financial trouble. Will they befall the same fate as Covad and Loki?
Uh, probably. When your bean counters tell the SEC that there seems to be a problem, well, they're often right. Refiling the annual report saying, "Gee, I think we need help" is generally not a good thing.
Good thing I just purchased my cable modem and broadband service through @Home last week so they could go out of business the next."
Well, apparently you didn't bother to search for Excite@Home at F---edCompany.com. They keep track of how many snafus companies like Excite@Home endure.
In the past four months, Excite@Home has had three rounds of layoffs and their stock has lost about three-quarters of its value.

Try f---edcompany.com
f*ckedcompany is blocked as an "inappropriate use of resources" from my job
I presume you're falling victim to URI-based content filtering. It probably won't block www.f, three dashes, edcompany.com. @nonymouse works even better (unless it's blocked too).

nice excuse, but not validThat is not a valid excuse, my vcr (cheap $100 JVC) sets its clock automatically from local's PBS when you first plug it in and keeps it updated. So does my TV.
There is no excuse to a Tivo not to work fully as a VCR without subscription. They are leaving out a big market share somebody else is going to take with his own Tivo clone.
I was thinking about buying one until I got to this article, I had no idea the thing didn't work as a VCR if you don't pay a subscription... it doesn't make any sense and if their business model is to subsidize boxes, they are going straight to hell.

Re:Don't forget...
The funny thing is, IGN originally was a product of Imagine Media (IGN = Imagine Gaming Network), but is now with snowball.com. So what did Imagine replace IGN with? Daily Radar. Figures.
Yeah, and Snowball is about dead as well, at least that's the last I heard on FC.
This is really disappointing news though. I used to read Gamecenter. When it died I moved to DailyRadar because I felt their articles were well-written and intellegent. Now, they're gone. The only two major sites left are IGN and GameSpot. Problem with those two is IGN seems to be written by a bunch of 13-year-olds, and GameSpot is entirely too corporate. So now what? What is a gamer supposed to do when he/she wants to find out about the newest games? -
Differences between Slashdot and Freshmeat
Can't we just save everyone the trouble of bookmarking two sites and just glue
/. and Freshmeat togetherYou don't call Slashdot "Slashf---ed" when it covers dot-com bad news. So why call it Slashmeat? Slashdot covers only newsworthy software releases. This includes packages critical to system and network structure (OS kernels, server software, major security patches, etc.) and "cool" stuff that fits the day's omelet. The new Developers section goes a long way toward this*. If you want, you can exclude this section in your user settings if you don't want to look at so-called "Slashmeat."
Either way, don't bother bookmarking two sites. A link to OSDN Freshmeat II is in the OSDN box to the left of the textarea where I paste this very comment.
* It also may represent budget cuts in the OSDN division of VA Linux Systems Inc. If scoop and Taco can work together nicely enough, the integration of Slashdot and Freshmeat may be a Good Thing for LNUX's bottom line.

Holding corp:s and criminal copyright infringement
If there is someone left with rights that has the power to sue for loses, then that is the same someone that would be required to continue its support or that person/company would probably be liable for damages in the first place.
When a f__ked company dies, a holding company buys up its assets, including GGM[0] rights. The holding company may then discontinue the product and support therefor, leaving you with no central license servers.
"So crack it." Four letters: DMCA. And even a copyright owner brings about no legal action, the Federal government can still prosecute criminal copyright infringers in the US.
Rented software (and proprietary software in general) give me too much discomfort for me to continue using them more than absolutely necessary. A large library of free software makes this "absolutely necessary" absolutely small.
[0] Government Granted Monopoly. I prefer this term to "IP" (intellectual property) because it more accurately describes how the United States Code treats copyright, trademark, and patent issues.

It's good to see that the first post went to a registered user with a low uid.
Secondly, the people over at F*cked Company will likely have this posted with severity of 100. -
Idealab! == FC
those who participate in the f---edcompany.com deadpool oughta know by now that Idealab! is well on it's way to dot-com death. If you don't, then I highly recommend you add Idealab to your list tomorrow, which is when you can add 5 new dot-coms to your list.

Re:Dilbert is complete BS
No, some (imaginary) people think their boss is an idiot because he can't tell the difference between a laptop and an Etch-A-Sketch. And it turns out there are lots of companies like this. Although it seems most of the idiots are in marketing and legal, now.
Maybe the employee is being elitist, as you suggest...but if part of the employee's job requires them to be intimately familiar with kernel code, maybe the boss should know something about it too, hmmm?

A method for promoting electronic commerceAbstract: A method and system for promoting businesses engaged in "electronic commerce". The business owner comes up with a concept of selling goods and services via the Internet, with the aim of making more profits than can be achieved by established businesses with existing infrastructures. Said business owner engages in promoting his/her ideas to a number of investors eager to make a substantial return on their investments. Investors, charmed by the lure of the Internet, do not investigate the worthiness of the owner's claims, the viability of the proposed electronic commerce site, or the probability that the business will ever make money. Said investors, in turn, invest large amounts of money into the stock of the corporation, and the resulting marketing hype drives the stock price up to levels well beyond those of most established companies. Profits realized from the stock valuation, in turn, support extravagant parties, brightly painted offices with toys all around (in order to foster "creativity"), and a general atmosphere of levity until such time as the business is no longer able to meet its financial obligations. Investors then leave and invest in the next electronic commerce company meeting these specifications.
Wow. I wonder how many people are already violating my patent.
