Quake 3: Arena Source GPL'ed
inotocracy writes "At John Carmack's Quakecon 2005 keynote he promised that the Quake 3 Arena source code would soon be released-- turns out he wasn't just pulling our leg! Today it was released, weighing in at 5.45mb, it makes for a quick download and a whole lotta fun. Developers, start your compilers!" -
Doom3 1.1 Patch Released
Rogerpq3 writes "The first non-beta patch for DOOM 3 has been released. The patch addresses many issues found in multiplayer and single player portions of the game. It also adds a Win32 dedicated server executable. You can download the patch at: FileFront, Doom3HQ, FileShack, Worthplaying, and GamersHell." -
DOOM 3 Final Video Trailer Released
Ant writes "A new Doom 3 Final Video Preview/Trailer is now out. It is about 42.5 MB big, 2.5 minutes long, and in Quicktime format. Download it from here (direct link and BitTorrent link), FilePlanet (an account required), or FileShack (an account required)." -
History Of Doom Movie Debuts
Rogerpq3 writes "A G4/Tech TV feature on DOOM 3, offering a history of the DOOM franchise in the words of the folks at id Software. The clip can be found on the air on The DOOM Franchise, episode 310 of a series called 'Icons.' The piece offers clips from DOOM 3 and other games, interview footage, analysis and more, and for those without access to the program. You can download the movie at: 3DGamers, Doom3HQ, Doom3.de, Doom3maps.de, and FileShack. It's really worth the download for any Doom and id fans out there. (Thanks: BluesNews)" -
P2P Solutions To Legal Game-Related Downloads?
[TASF]Overkill writes "As 'P2P' slowly becomes a synonym for 'illegal', the perfectly legitimate and still very useful capabilities of P2P emerge. Modifications, demos, trailers, and other game-related files are typically downloaded by a lot of users all at once, something that kills the client-server setup of most websites. Game Philez is using Gnutella, ED2k, and G2, to help users avoid the long lines at other download sites, and helping to ensure that P2P stays useful, even for the DMCA-fearing citizen." With legal game-related BitTorrent solutions like FileRush and GameTab also out there, is P2P a viable alternative to the subscription download services? -
Half-Life Vulnerabilities Exposed, Patched
AEton writes "PivX Solutions revealed in a press release three apparently new vulnerabilities in Half-Life and its related mods (such as Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat). Security researcher Auriemma Luigi discovered the flaws, reported them to Valve, and waited over three months for an official response before releasing an unofficial patch to correct the issues. Details on each of the vulnerabilities and sample code are linked to in the press release. (The third one looks kind of flaky, but the buffer overflows seem real.)" Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing out Valve have now released a dedicated Windows server patch and dedicated Linux server patch (links via Fileshack) which seem to fix the issues. -

Half-Life 2 Teaser Movie Released
tplessers writes "Check out the official Half-Life 2 teaser movie (IGN.com link, .MOV format). The screenshots from last week were breathtaking, but seeing it all move in such a realistic way makes it all complete..." Looks like there are plenty of stable mirrors up for this now, including DivX versions from Fileplanet and Fileshack (registrations required), or the zero-registration P2P goodness of BitTorrent linkage from Gametab. -
Unreal Tournament 2003 Mac Demo Unleashed
An anonymous reader writes "The Unreal Tournament 2003 demo for Mac has been released - see the story at Insidemacgames.com." The demo has 5 maps, requires OS X, and download mirrors, as always, are hard to come by - try 3D Gamers and Fileshack, also here's unofficial BitTorrent link-age [verified, correct file -Jamie]. It's good to see the Mac community being supported with high-profile titles like this - but what other games would you like to see ported to the Apple-icious platform? -
Galactic Civilizations Demo Released
Galactic Civilizations is a recently released PC space-based strategy game (see our earlier story on it, or check out an elegant review at Gamespot), notable for favorable comparisons against the none too favorably received Master Of Orion 3. There's now a Windows demo (51mb) of Galactic Civilizations available, originally released via Gamespot, but also downloadable from Gamershell, Fileshack, and from Gametab's BitTorrents page. Not bad for a game originally developed for OS/2 back in 1994. -
Tron 2.0 Previews Disc-overed
Aron Schatz writes "You've probably all seen the original movie that the game is based on, but, judging by this PC preview from Gamespy, Tron 2.0 is a completely new universe." Fortunately, there are still light cycles and pseudo-futuristic glow effects everywhere, as IGN.com also noted, and these can be better appreciated in the most recently released trailer movie (Fileplanet link, Fileshack link, BitTorrent link courtesy Gametab.) -
Star Trek - Elite Force 2 Demo Out Now
suedehed writes "The Star Trek: Elite Force 2 demo is out. And it ROCKS! Here's the Fileplanet link." Bonus links to Fileshack and Happy Puppy (registration required) - this is another worthy FPS demo (courtesy Ritual and Activision) that should be well worth checking out. Update: 05/02 22:02 GMT by S : Here's a BitTorrent link. -
Unreal II Demo Released
G9o writes "The demo for Unreal II: The Awakening has been released. The 153MB file is available for download at Fileplanet or FileShack. Originally Epic said they weren't going to release a demo for it, but perhaps the mediocre reception changed their mind?" In related news, French games site FactorNews are hosting a press document that claims "Unreal II" for Xbox, "Unreal Assault" for PS2 and "Unreal Tournament 2004" for PC will all be shown by Infogrames at E3, albeit possibly behind closed doors. -
Anachronox Movie Finished
Sim9 writes "Recently, Anachronox: The Movie released its final episode. The movie is based on the PC game, and is actually rendered using the Quake II engine! (Note that the official mirror is usually full, so also try: Fileplanet, The Archive, AusGamers, and Fileshack. Enjoy!" Update: 04/12 04:58 GMT by T : You can also find BitTorrent files at f.scarywater.net. -
Duke Nukem 3D Source Released to GPL
kg4czo writes "Well, it looks like the kind folks at 3drealms have released the Duke Nuke'em 3D source under the GPL. It's actually buildable under OpenWatcom 1.0 as a 32bit dos program. Maybe we can see a few improvements and ports out there now."
