Fortress Forever
If you like a TFC-like game where there's more skill required, you get grenades, and you can move around at more than a mile per hour, check out Fortress Forever. Now that TF2 is free, that gives you a free copy of the Source engine and in turn makes Fortress Forever completely free to play.
1. Download TF2 for free
2. Download Fortress Forever.
3. Install.
4. ????
5. Enjoy better gameplay!
And you don't have any whiny kids on these servers complaining that you beat them when you actually used a little skill. :) -
Re:semi related question
er... Fortress Forever.
Bah, I spotted that I used a url BBCode tag and still clicked Submit.

Re:Still no HL2: Episode 3?
I invite you to check out Fortress Forever, a Half-Life 2 Mod that does its best to stay true to TFC and QTF. Much like any other Team Fortress game (any veteran can speak of at least half a dozen TF mods for various games), it has its improvements and its weaknesses. It is still under constant development. I haven't had the pleasure of playing it for a good while, though, as I'm a bit burned out on the TF experience. (In my nightmares, someone breaks into my house and I've forgotten how to concaim.)

Re:Transfers to PC Game Ports too...
As far as any Half-Life 1 based games are concerned, input that registers server side would change drastically based on the client FPS.
http://www.fortress-forever.com/fpsreport/ for a detailed analysis of the situation of forcing fps_max in settings. Scroll down to the very bottom for the tl;dr graph.
I used to force mine on 101 (like every noob recommends) before I read this, and there is a noticable increase in speed when I lowered it to 50. So much, that it's become impossible to shoot the autoshotty (its spread did absolutely no damage firing faster). However, with weapons like the MP5, it might allow you to get a shot or two off more than the other person shooting at you, giving you an advantage over an entire game....2 less deaths, 2 more kills. In a tournament that could easily be the difference between winning and losing.
I wonder if this is true for other similar engines?

Re:Wont do justice?
It's about two teams of four outwitting eachother
Congratulations, you just described an 8 player game of Team Fortress or one of its sequels, the most recent of which is Fortress Forever... er... I mean Team Fortress 2.
Except that people don't seem to be playing the same 4/5 maps over again on Team Fortress 2. Maybe it's because Valve's actually updating that game, unlike Left 4 Dead... -
Re:Mac vs. PC vs. Xbox 360 vs. PS3
Well for one reason, I like to get customized models for my games. You can't really do that on a console.
Moreover, most of the games I play are mods on the Source engine. Fortress Forever, Eternal Silence, Zombie Panic, etc. They're free, I can make maps for them, and I can download other players' maps and customizations.
So far the only console game that has even made an attempt at this is Unreal Tournament 3, but I'm no fan of UT and I don't own the PS3.

TF2 is to slow and there are no grenades. -
Re:Oh team fortress, how I miss you
I can't see buying HL2 and EP1 again just for a beta test. I think I will go with http://www.fortress-forever.com/

Fortress Forever
It should be noted that Fortress Forever http://www.fortress-forever.com/ will also be released on the 17th. And that is a Mod that's free for everyone who has purchased Half-Life 2. It's a real Team Fortress mod on the Source engine (made by tfc players)! Definitely worth a checkout! (I can't wait!)

Re:Dumbing down of FPSs
Thank you for verbalizing everything I thought when I read the "article". I think the reason TF had such longevity in the first place was the extreme familiarity players had with the game and it's maps. Valve carried this tradition faithfully by copying original TF maps in TFC. Sure they added their own fun maps later on, but the community stayed in part thanks to the timeless classics. We had gobs of player made maps to fulfill that need for new content. Randomizing maps is best left to the realm of strategy games where environmental discovery and adapting to new tactical situations are the name of the game. It's sad, really, the more I read about TF2. They might as well have spawned some other brand. It helps that I have Fortress Forever to hope on, though.

Re:Arguably true
But if none of them are still on, I'd feel much less bad refering to TF2 as "Team Daikatana" or "Team Fortress Forever".
:)[Team] Fortress Forever is already taken.

TF2? No thanks.

Re:The Curse of TF2

If they beat Valve to a release, it would be totally awesome. -
Re:Aww...
They probably are waiting for the community to do the work for them.

HL2 - Team Fortress
For those who remember (and some of us who still play) TFC, there is an independant HL2 mod in development, http://fortress-forever.com/

Re:Affects only servers run by gamers
Is there much comunication between servers in CoD?
I play TFC (an old HL mod) and because it's an older game with a small yet strong player pool, there tends to be a larger comunity feel. While I only play in about 2 servers, I know many top players via online comunities like http://www.fortress-forever.com/ -
Re:Not another expansion!
I'm sure that they want to create this expansion pack for the money... But, their current technologies require really a lot of work.
They aren't selling this "expansion pack" its just a patch and new map that will be available to all owners of HL2.
And, where is TF2? Guess that it will be never finished...
Try Fortress-Forever I'd personally rather play a 3rd person mod that is currently being worked on than some vaporware that will probably never see the light of day.
