I'm sure that they want to create this expansion pack for the money... But, their current technologies require really a lot of work.
They aren't selling this "expansion pack" its just a patch and new map that will be available to all owners of HL2.
And, where is TF2? Guess that it will be never finished...
Try Fortress-Forever I'd personally rather play a 3rd person mod that is currently being worked on than some vaporware that will probably never see the light of day.
For many online video games there is a lot of imformation that you don't want the client to have untill they need it or you are going to end up with a lot of "hacks" which use/modify the information that would be sent back and forth between clients. And even if you didn't care about the security, the whole idea of using p2p swarming just doesn't make sense because of the amount of redundant data that would have to sent around as well as the whole latency issue. Then you have to deal with people not sending data or corrupt data and people dropping packets because they can't send all the needed information. Its just a mess.
Favorites list (don't remember if original CS allowed this. I used to write down the IP of a good server to play there)
Using Half-Life's in-game server management did allow you to toggle a server as a favorite and even allowed you to browse favorites only. The only problem was that it seemed buggy as hell and would frequently "forget" your favorites from another session (which can really piss you off), but it was there.
With Steam, all that business is managed automatically. It's heaven. As for buggy or memory intensive, I encountered one bug so far (input lag playing havoc with my keyboard) and that lasted only a few days.
Steam had way to many problems on release. It was no where near ready for release and shouldn't have been implemented. I didn't use steam for a long time (pissed off at Valve for buying out (ruining) HL mods), but I know plenty of CS players who were left without playing their precious game for days at a time because problems with content delivery and detection. If you know some young CS players, you know it can be more addiction than heroin for them. It pissed the shit out of them. I can remember hearing, "Steam sucks" every five minutes. At the moment Steam seems to have settled down and most of the bugs are worked out, but there are still problems. A month (or two) ago I was locked out for a week because Steam forgot to remove/update a file. While the system might seem to a nice way to update a game I still prefer just downloading updates off mirrors like the old days. Unfortunately as more games go to Steam (especially since Valve took down WON), less and less use their own sites and mirrors for downloading their mods.
HL2 has much more than just ragdoll physics. Most of the objects in the game are affected by their fairly realistic physics engine, which is a lot of fun to play around with. They even have a weapon made specificially to play around with the physics, not the gravity gun but the dev pistol gun. You can use that thing to do all sorts of things like make the dead ragdolls dance, turn a mattress in a "flying carpet", or adhere stuff together and make planes with O2 canisters.
Do you think Unreal will continue to nurture the best/most modding talent, now that Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 mods are looming on the horizon?
Its up for grabs, Epic was able to attract lots of modders with their contest and because they had the newest engine at the time. Now they no long have the 'sexiest' engine and people are moving on. Some of the devs from Red Orchestra are now working on a HL2 mod Insurgency.
He is correct its at the 43 second mark, 10 or so frames after the id logo flashes on the screen. The old school DOOM character flashes in one frame. There is also a monster that flashes a couple frames before it. I looks like an average monster, but you never know.
I think they should just drop the mouse, hook it up to a computer and draw fractals. That would be a really cool project and it would make some pretty cool results.
I don't know why someone modded this guy down. Everything he said about the mod is true. Now, don't take me wrong I enjoy it, but once one team takes an advantage, with all the scis and most of the tech already researched, it is all over. You don't even have to play the rest of the map. When one team has all the armor, health and regen upgrades plus a full team of scis continuously putting out new weapons there is no chance for the other team to win. Especially since all the winning team has to do is protect the scis.
SI was never a huge mod, it had a small community with a couple of servers with only a couple of regulars, but it was nice. You got to know the other people playing and most of the time your teammates would actually know how to play the game well (ie focus on upgrades before weapons). Hopefully this new update brings forth a new group of SI players...
Thanks to crying mothers telling sob stories of teenagers getting into crashes, in most US states, 16 now gets you a learner's permit, but you need to be 17 to drive without your parent sitting next to you.
It depends on the state. Take MA for example you can get your learners at 16 and license at 16 1/2...
Well, they can cut outside connections, but the students can still have access to the network. If the message is sent to an account provided by the college then they shouldn't have any problem getting the email.
Since the discovery of the 3 Stooges effect this logic has been proven false. Windows isn't the strongest OS, there are just so many virii trying to get in that they are getting jammed in the door frame...
Well, if you read the post you will see that they are currently experimenting with linux. Which means they probably will have to change the requirements to Win98SE or better...
Funny, informative, informative, funny, good thing I don't have any mod points and your already +5.
Exploitation is wrong
This looks like the site
Hmmm...links not working.

A stort video of some of the messed up things you can do with the engine
Left out a '"' in a tag and it dropped the link. Links are below:

"Wonderful, are there any more rude and brutish group of new, "wanna-be" anime fans than wanna-be EVA fans?"
Yeah, Cowboy Bebop fans.
Cowboy Bebop fans aren't bad its the DBZ fans and the future Naruto fans.
The site is already down but there is an example of it in a VW: here

Well it looks like it has been slashdotted, but you can get some video of it elsewhere... Blinken Lights
Slashdot has taken down Zeropaid...
I'd rather not have someone projecting goatse or whatever they please on my coffee table...

Imagine talking on IRC
Thats why they invented 1337 speak. You can type efficiantly using one hand and a numpad...
