Class action suit?I made a mention of this in my blog. I think that a class action lawsuit against Kazaa by those who have been sued by the RIAA could be a possibility.
Look at the story of the 12-year-old girl sued by the RIAA. She said "I thought it was OK to download music because my mom paid a service fee for it."
Couldn't this be the understanding of many Kazaa users? I'm paying a $29.95 fee (for Kazaa Plus), it's a legit company, how could this be illegal?
Does Kazaa warn its users in any way that they may be breaking the law? Is sharing on by default? The lawyers are salivating.

Re:list of stories
I have zero interest in Bennifer as well, and I would still agree that those stories qualify as "Ultra Liberalism 101". Equally, I'm sure that if I go to certain other sites, I might see a similar list ragging on about abortion, prayer and other nonsense, and I would dub that "Ultra Conservatism 101".
If you want real news, read something like the Economist. If you want ultra liberal crap, read the Nation. If you want ultra conservative crap, read/watch Fox News. -
Re:The RIAA sucks
If there were any real journalists left.
It wouldn't matter if there were. For the most part, big media is one way or another connected with RIAA members. So since "big media" is connected to these RIAA members, and as such should be acting in their own interests, then they shouldn't be reporting all this news about the RIAA going after a 12 year old right? Jeez, where do you think Slashdot got the links from? Yesterday the initial report came from Fox News, and today the follow up came from the AP. It's not like we're heading underground for this news because there's some conspiracy going on with "big media." If you read those articles, and the quotes they extracted, it's pretty clear that they're embarrassing the hell out of the RIAA.

Re:Poor? Oh really?
Any statistics to back this up because I for one don't believe it.
Fifteen thousand French died in the heat wave. Why was that? "The heat wave brought suffocating temperatures of up to 104 in the first two weeks of August in a country where air conditioning is rare." And, "The high death toll has triggered an angry debate in France over shortcomings of the health system." From Fox (this was just the most recent article grabbed via Google News)
Doesn't seem to me as though the French are so well off. Where are the air conditioners? Where was the great health care that they enjoy? Where is this fabulous standard of living? On the bright side, the families of the 15,000 dead reportedly enjoyed a nice, long vacation.
I do not have the source of my impression ready to hand, but I found something similar. I don't doubt these guys have an axe to grind, but that doesn't mean they're wrong when they say,
America's poor do not live lavishly, but few households are destitute. The average "poor" American lives in a larger house or apartment, is more likely to own a car and is more likely to have basic amenities such as an indoor toilet than the general population of Western Europe. In addition: 14
* 53 percent of poor households have air conditioning;
* 91 percent own a color TV and 29 percent own two or more color TVs;
* 64 percent own a car and 14 percent own two or more cars;
* 56 percent own a microwave oven; and
* 40 percent own their home, with 71,000 owning homes worth more than $300,000.
[me again]
Granted, also, that I may have confused the poor with people on welfare, so I may need to revise my statement to "the poor are pretty well off", rather than "people on welfare are pretty well off".

The Narrowing of the Internet
"...offering users a choice of viewing a site and having it logged, or not viewing it"
This may sound like quite an elegant solution, especially compared to the outright blocking of sites not recognised by their master database but this could well end up creating a far more dangerous climate of self-censorship.
For instance, if a perfectly legimate but not "mainstream" site, say an anti-war one, hasn't yet made it onto their database, you have to accept that your boss will be notified of your visit and made aware of your doubts about the government.
In that situation, most people will just give up and put the corporate propaganda feed-pipe back in their mouths.

Re:In case of /.'ing
The article (it isn't slashdotted at the moment) on the Fox site doesn't contain the spelling error you're having so much fun criticizing. It seems that you've leapt to a conclusion when you should have read the original article to verify it first.
There are plenty of reasons to bash Fox news, this just isn't one of them. -

Inevitable backlash?
I don't know, maybe I overestimate the public. Back when the $90billion lawsuits were filed, I thought there would be some public outrage. When they filed all those subpeonas, I thought there would be lots of anger. Instead, everyone just shrugged their shoulders, said "sucks for them", and went on like nothing ever happened.
I shouldn't be surprised. People just like to stick their heads in the sand. They let lots of bad things go on, and take no action. Why should this be any different? Still, it's hard to accept that nobody cares.
I guess this is why things are so fucked up, huh? This is why SCO (the RIAA, the MPAA, DirecTV, the NAACP, etc) get away with all their shit. Unless someone is directly affected, they don't give a shit. Nobody seems worried that they'll be next. Why doesn't anyone ever think that "it could happen to them"?
Outside of a few issues, generally championed by zealots, nobody gives a damn. Am I the only one that's even a little surprised and/or disheartened by the amount of apathy towards this (and other issues)?

Re:Like, WTF?
Yes, it has to be said: This submission was incredibly insensitive.
Interestingly, about as many people (~20) died in this Brazilian accident as died in the history of NASA events (17), according to this article.
So, stemen is saying, in effect, Brazil just lost as many people as (or more than) NASA ever did, but let's ignore that and ridiculously speculate about the USA's future potential for space dominance.
Sweet. -
So much for ACLU and free speech
The ACLU is defending NAMBLA, an organization that has members that raped and killed a young boy. In that trial, the ACLU is trying to get a gag order in the case, so no one can talk about it. So much for free speech.
Check out this interview with the person that brought the suit. -
Re:Dean Campaigners are Net SavvyWhat the hell is he going to do with all that money anyway?
It's a good question, since he already has a cable news channel and a few hundred talk-radio stations. He'll probably just buy saturation advertising from everyone who isn't already on board. Hope you weren't planning on consuming any media during 2004.

Re:Talaban != Government?
And besides, maybe our intelligence saying it was Osama was wrong. Our intelligence about the WMD in Iraq was wrong
I don't want to go supertechnical on your logic argument here, but what evidence do you have that our intelligence about WMD in Iraq was wrong? Just because it has not been proven to your satisfaction does not mean that it was wrong.
We know that a scientist was ordered to bury parts of a gas centrifuge in his flowerbed.
We know that Iraq buried entire squadrons of fighter jets to prevent their discovery/destruction.
And yes, there appears that there may have been a misstatement about Iraq+Niger+Uranium, but British Intelligence stands behind the connection. But even if this was a mistake, and there was no attempt to buy uranium from Niger, it does not mean that Iraq had no WMD.
Assertion: Some Cats are Black
Your Refutation: This cat is not black, and you have shown me no black cats, so therefore there are no black cats.
Now your assertion may turn out to be true, that the intelligence was wrong, and there were no WMD, but you are making it in absence of any evidence that it was actually wrong, and that there are definitively no WMD.
We do know, definitively, that Iraq at one time had WMD, and that the inspectors who were trying to eradicate it were withdrawn after repeated interference by the Iraqi government, but they could have secretly destroyed it all without telling us or proving it to us.
Just as, last night, all the black cats on the planet may have suddenly expired. -
Media bias against Mike?
look at him.. I don't mean to come off as a racist or anything, but seriously. when you are in fact a terrorist, wouldn't it make sense to sharpen up a little, maybe try and cut down on the co-worker- thinks- im- a- terrorist- because- i- look- like- this factor?
I suspect we're being misled. It's alot easier for the media to villify someone who looks so "evil" (or at least, different). Looking around, it looks like "scruffy looking Mike" is not necessarily typical Mike. Check out the courtroom sketch, he's just a clean shaven, balding geek. Well, maybe he just cleaned up for the court case, but he apparently also cleaned up for his wedding. And he has a nicely trimmed beard for this photograph.
I don't expect any better from Fox News, given such brilliant lines as claiming that Mike conspired "...to join the fight in Afghanistan against U.S. troops." Um, yeah. I suppose we sent our troops over to Europe during World War II because we wanted to join the fight against German troops? Certainly not because we wanted to stop German aggression, no we were specifically against the German troops. Of course, if you're honest and say that Mike might have been conspiring to defending Afghanistan from external invasion, it doesn't sound quite as evil.
Okay, maybe Mike really did try to help the Taliban, and I oppose that. However, this really doesn't point to Mike being an imminant danger to the United States. The man has an American wife and children! Mike's being made an example of because we're discovering that finding real terrorists is hard.

Re:Funny.
Funny how Fox News fails to mention that he worked for Intel.
From the article:
In March, federal agents seized Hawash, 38, from a parking lot outside Intel Corp., where he worked...
It's amazing what you run across when you RTFA...then again, you wouldn't have been able to get in a gratuitous jab at Fox News if you had done that.

Hell, we haven't even got "human rights" yet..
The CIA has put David Kay, a former United Nations weapons inspector in Iraq, in charge of the search for illegal weapons. Wolfowitz said Kay told him during a meeting Sunday that U.S. officials were having difficulty getting Iraqi prisoners to tell what they know about Saddam Hussein's chemical, biological or nuclear programs. The Iraqi government claimed prior to the war that it had destroyed all the weapons of mass destruction it once held, and U.N. inspectors were unable to find evidence of any. "I pushed him (Kay) a bit on why aren't these people talking. Why don't you, in effect, plea bargain with them," Wolfowitz said. "He said there is no concept of plea bargaining in this place. If you confessed you just got executed faster or tortured less." See for info on who this David Kay is.

Another articlefoxnews.com also ran an article on this. My favorite part:
"This truly is a case of regulatory overkill," said Tim Searcy, ATA [ed: American Teleservices Association] executive director. "The FCC ignored its obligations under the federal law and the Constitution to carefully balance the privacy interests of consumers with the First Amendment rights of legitimate telemarketers."
I just don't get why it seems so hard to for some to understand that the right to free speech doesn't entitle one to an audience. -

Letter from Miss Moffet Humpkins to Pastor Ben
Lately, kind sir, I have been quite perturbed by certain events that have been proliferating in our society. Was it not so long ago, that in more civilized times, children respected and obeyed their parents, under the threat of a firm thrashing if their impudence and audacity got out of hand? But oh, kind father, the trials that parents today must suffer! Not just the other day, whist I was dining upon a fresh garden salad, my daughter, of not even 6 years old, insisted upon uprooting most unrest in requesting I purchase for her a milky-way bar! I quickly remarked to the impudent creature that one of our many servants would be more than willing to carriage her to the local general store; but no! she insisted that I -personally- drive the buggy to make the purchase! Oh wise man of God, what is a poor woman to do in these hard times! Before you can open your Moses-lovin' mouth Pastor, I have proposed a final solution to the problem of "youthful indiscretion"- Prison Labor!
Before you bring up cries of protest from your liberalism-saturated mind, hear me out! Our disrespectful children will learn the true meaning of honor and sacrifice while they're hard at work pounding license plates and assembling adding machines! Honestly, what better way is there to whip our children into shape? Scare them with threats of the boogey-man? Psh-haw! Just look at the wondrous effects prison labor had on the Dell kid! Not only will prison labor harden our children into obedient automatons, it will show them the reality they will have to face if they follow their current paths and become criminals!
Thank you for your attention kind Minister, and God-Bless! -

Alas, it is already too late.
Now, that the rediscovered full-length novel about the Club, The Big Kerplop is being republished with a bit of a splash, some adults may look at stories like this and decided that there's a danger that kids might start imitating the novels. The bigger danger, though, may come if they don't.
Some of these tricks could get you some scars I guess but that's not the worst future awaiting a young reader. First, chicks dig scars -- although that theorem lies well outside of the scope of this book. Second, this may be the adult in me, but kids today seem fatter, lazier, and more hogtied than ever before.
I understand the reviewer's concerns, and largely agree with them. Alas, I fear it may already be too late. Can we realistically expect that society will allow "children" to perform dangerous experiments when "[a] Santa Monica elementary school has banned the game of tag, once synonymous with youth and innocence, because they say it creates self-esteem issues among weaker and slower children."

DOI Websites Yanked *Again* for Security Flaws
Remember in late 2001 when the US Department of Interior was ordered by the court to take more than 100 of their web servers offline due to abysmal security? Hired white hats were easily able to gain access to the US Indian Trust database and found no security measures or even audit trails in place. Worried that this could be contributing to the agency's continuing mismanagement and loss of allegedly billions of dollars belonging to Native Americans, Judge Royce C. Lamberth ordered the DOI to "immediately shut down Internet access from any computer, server and system in the department that has access to individual Indian trust data."
The defense counsel noted that the fact that they took down over 100 mostly unrelated servers "...just shows you how inept they are. They don't even understand how these systems relate to each other so they just pull the plug on the entire system."
And now last month they were ordered to disconnect their servers again after refusing to let a court-appointed special master test the security measures they've supposedly put into place since then.
Sounds like an endemic problem for government agencies, at least at the federal level.

Or, if you're lazy:
"Despite that the Freon-based foam worked well and that an exemption from the CFC phase-out could have been obtained, NASA succumbed to political correctness. The agency substituted an allegedly more eco-friendly foam for the Freon-based foam.
PC-foam was an immediate problem.
The first mission with PC-foam resulted in 11 times more damaged thermal tiles on Columbia than the previous mission with the Freon-based foam." -
Longer Article
A slightly more detailed article is available from fox news. A couple interesting things noted here that aren't in the BBC article is that this was the seventh and final test, and that in addition to the camera lens popping off, several other guages which were measuring the experiment were damaged from the impact.
