FreeBSD ports collection
Sounds like everyone is looking for something like the FreeBSD ports collection.

*BSD ports system?
Why not leverage from the BSD ports system? It already builds directly from source, checksumming the downloads to ensure security, and applies BSD-specific patches. Shouldn't be too difficult to grow this so that source patches and binary packages are platform-neutral.

Ok, I admit that I have not touched a Linux box in years. Mainly because I became a necrophiliac.
:)
However, I am slightly confused by the link from linux.dell.com to Dell's 2.6.x kernel patch about EDD .... is it completely normal to see code being submitted for possible inclusion with "Copyright (C) 2002, 2003 Dell Inc." attached? How does the licensing work? -
Stop the faggotry!
Is it any wonder people think Linux users are a bunch of flaming homosexuals when its fronted by obviously gay losers like these?! BSD has a mascot who leaves us in no doubt that this is the OS for real men! If Linux had more hot chicks and gorgeous babes then maybe it would be able to compete with BSD!
Linux is a joke as long as it continues to lack sexy girls like her! I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx. I mean are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?! Linux has nothing that can possibly compete. Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat!
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Don't you wish you could get one of these? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty!

There is hope here!
My friends, I know we all want Open Source to succeed. However, it has come to my attention that the amount of attention being lavished on Linux by the community at the expense of BSD ignores one key advantage that the vernerable OS from Berkeley has over everyone's favourite from Finland.
How can people say BSD is dying when it has a mascot like this?! Linux needs to get its act together if it's going to compete with the kind of hot chicks and gorgeous babes that BSD has to offer!
How can you take Linux seriously when its fronted by losers like these?! Would you buy software from them? Would you even walk on the same side of the street as them?! I don't think so! Re:A Cool Idea, But...
You know this is one of the better descriptions of portage/Gentoo I have heard. If I had the time/resources I would re-write portage using a bette langauge and more sane feature set.
Like a language designed to calculate and traverse production rule dependencies with the ability to call arbitrary shell commands on those dependencies? Good enough for more than 10,000 ports.
All right, it's far from perfect, but for what it's designed to do, it's ideal. Maybe if there was an implementation of ant in C... -
You've got to be kidding...
Define "friendly." FreeBSD has some of the best documentation I've seen anywhere, a more than supportive community and has the same GUIs that Linux does. Once you've set it up (the installer is curses based, but makes a LOT more sense than most point&click Linux installers), it's no more difficult to use than any Linux distribution. Come on, you've got more sense than to say this.

Re:5.x production release date?
The 5.x branch is expected to go -STABLE with FreeBSD 5.3, which should be out some time this spring. There is a list of outstanding issues at http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.3R/todo.html.
-
Re:May try it then
Hold on... Last I knew (which was awhile ago), FreeBSD (even in 5.x) still has more instances of the Big Kernel Lock/Giant Lock than Linux does. As I recall, Linux fully threaded their networking stack back in the 2.4 days.
I know earlier on in the 5.x series, Matt Dillon and others acknowledged that FreeBSD was at least a year behind Linux in their SMP support. It's been a couple years since then, but Linux hasn't sat still. It appears BSD hasn't either. Looking at FreeBSD's SMP status page, it appears that they've made a lot of progress. Their networking stack (at least, that portion of which that is called out as line items in a table) is nearly fully threaded. Coolness.

He would better read the FreeBSD Handbook first
You can find it here: FreeBSD HandBook
Instead of doing this:
using the installer, I typed
/bin/bash as the shellI could edit the passwd files
It took me over an hour trying to find on Google clues
I had to create links for
/dev/dvd and /dev/cdrwI also had to edit rc.conf to enable Samba
Further remarks:
The ports system does come with preconfigured applications, this is what I really like about FreeBSD. I don't need long time to setup things.
Instead VLC (which is a really buggy thing), better use mplayer.
ext2fs has an evil license (GPL), that's why it is not default.
I am happy with my X11-speed on 5.2R, I have 2700fps using glxgears on my P3-500.
Ports is the best thing about FreeBSD. Talking differently is typical for Linux users.
I consider FreeBSD as the best desktop ever, but I don't use Gnome2 (does not mean, I don't like it), I rather use Xfce4, which looks good and is lightweight.
I actually think that you need less experience to install FreeBSD. I recently tried to install Debian, but it failed to find my Intel Ethernet Express Pro 100, because Debian is using ancient kernels. Such things and all networking (including PPPoE) works out-of-the-box on FreeBSD.

Re:Somebody should tell this gal...Sorry, perhaps the Early Adopter Guide could clear this up:
- "We feel that such users are probably best served by upgrading to 5.X only after a 5-STABLE development branch has been created; this may be around the time of 5.3-RELEASE."
- "FreeBSD 5.0, 5.1, and 5.2 are based on the CURRENT branch."
-
Re:Somebody should tell this gal...
Um, actually 5.2 is indeed a stable release, just as all RELEASE-branch releases are. STABLE branches are defined as such by the FreeBSD team: "FreeBSD-STABLE is our development branch from which major releases are made."
You're also wrong about the 5-STABLE comment - do you actually use FreeBSD? Whoever mod'd the parent as "Informative" should really take a look at the FreeBSD handbook - inaccurate posts regarding the BSDs are really starting to get out of hand. -

Re:Sounds like a big improvement
OK you got 1 of 6 correct. You fail.
Linux and FreeBSD kernels, which
1. is the most SMP scalable (parallel)
Linux. (Linux and FreeBSD both started with a BKL about 5 years ago. Linux is now being used on 512 processor machines, FreeBSD doesn't scale past 4 CPUs for all their research).
2. is the most algorithmically scalable
Linux
3. has fastest single threaded performance
Linux (from the horse's proverbial mouth).
4. runs on more architectures
Linux. See here and here (The Linux Kernel supports more architectures than the NetBSD kernel, idiot).
5. supports the most hardware
Linux. See here and here (NetBSD is actually the one that prides themselves as running on toasters. And nobody cares about your shitty DEC Alphas. IA64, POWER are where its at now).
6. has the fastest TCP/IP stack
Linux
See you again next year. -

Ditch Windows; get WindowMaker
After switching to Linux six years ago and spending a lot of time trying to navigate Gnome's menus to find what I was looking, a friend told me about WindowMaker. I edit the menus to weed out the cruft, include things that take a lot of keystrokes to launch, and open terminals to do my other work. If I need something that I didn't put in a menu, I have a command prompt to launch it. No muss, no fuss. This, of course requires a real OS.

Re:Athlon64 Coming Along Slowly
I wish I'd done more research on hardware compatibility, particularly motherboards, because installing 64-bit Linux has been a bitch.
I think you'll find that FreeBSD has moved ahead quite nicely on AMD64 and you could well have better results than Linux. By all accounts 5.2 is pretty solid on all tier 1 platforms.

Re:Too bad...
A really good troll makes every word in his sentence a link so that his point seems valid.
You don't even have to visit the sites, just google something like "linux vs windows", grab relevent links and include then in your post. No one will read them anyways, and believe you because you provided plenty of background Info and reputable sources (computing.net included!). They will have to believe your Pro-Windows rant.
Linux isn't a Toy OS. it's used by google. Who provided you this Informative post :) -

Sound: for me, a one line entry to enable the onboard sound on my motherboard.
Screensavers: plenty installed with KDE by default.Best of all, now I have an idea what I'm doing (a little reading goes a long way) the install took less than twenty minutes. If there's something you particularly like on your Linux distro(s) check the FreeBSD ports collection - there's a good chance it'll be there. MP3? XMMS seems pretty good to me.
If you're prepared to put in the effort, FreeBSD will come through for you time and time again.

Goals Met.Thier goal was to make a standard set of packages what would work seamlessly together and be user friendly. They wanted to create a set of rules to follow when adding non-official packages and work on schemes to make packages work together and not break each other be accident. There goals have never been met by any distrobution to date.
Are you sure? That sounds like FreeBSD and its ports collection.

Re:reinstall? The issue is found on the Errata page for 5.2-RELEASE:
- (13 Jan 2004) The sysutils/kdeadmin3 port/package has a bug in the KUser component that can cause deletion of the root user from the system password file. Users are strongly urged to upgrade to version 3.1.4_1 of this port/package.

Re:I tried 5.1
The default kernel is shipped with ancilliary features as modules, in order to save space and avoid conflicts. This includes sound. Go to
/modules, type ls snd*, look at the modules that are there. Text mode screensavers are in there too; they're all of the type *_saver.ko. As long as you know what type of sound card you have, it should be supported either by default or via a patch. The FreeBSD modules commands are kldload, kldunload, kldstat; look at the man pages (in FreeBSD, the system man pages are actually useful, as is the module system). You can also configure modules to load on startup; edit the file /boot/modules.conf. I'm still using 4.x (about to set up 5.2 on my laptop), and you probably should be too; 5 is still very much developer's release territory, and will be until 5-STABLE is created.
Also, read the Handbook. Everything FreeBSD you ever wanted is in there. The appropriate section for sound is 16.2. It's a wonderful operating system - much more sensible and well-organised than any Linux distribution I've used, although admittedly not as newbie-impressing as something like Mandrake 9.2 - and its documentation is very high quality, so I suggest you do look at it. -

Re:misconception of development version, againOne minor nit: the -RELEASE branches are preceded by at least a few weeks of code freeze. The event is planned in advance and the Release Engineering team usually lays out a detailed calendar with deadlines like "no non-security or non-critical code after this date" and "testing candidate #1 on this date". By the time a -RELEASE is announced, the code has been essentially unchanged for several weeks and a few test releases have been issued.
I mention this for the benefit of anyone who might've been wondering if the FreeBSD folks just wake up some Tuesday, say "hey, this is pretty good!", and take a snapshot of the CVS tree.

Re:a simple question from a bsd newbie
I'm afraid it's not as easy as knoppix, but with a little bit of patience it's not too bad.

sk0 multicast is fixed now...at least, I'm pretty sure it is. I was having the same problems as he was: interface would not pick up DHCP or IPv6 route unless it was in promiscuous mode. I managed to get in contact with Jung-uk Kim, who was working on the sk0 driver, to test some patches, and they worked perfectly.
Looking at FreeBSD's CVS site, it looks like the patch has just been commited. My thanks again to Jung-uk and the rest of the FreeBSD team!

Well, the beerware license as taken from Poul-Henning Kamp's website is nice and short:
"THE BEER-WARE LICENSE" (Revision 42):
<phk@FreeBSD.ORG> wrote this file. As long as you retain this notice you can do whatever you want with this stuff. If we meet some day, and you think this stuff is worth it, you can buy me a beer in return Poul-Henning Kamp -
Linus, the Metrosexual...
Hey All! Have you ever seen Linus Torvald's wife Tove Torvalds? Not to be rude but can't that beautiful baby get a makeover and put on the sexy?! I mean, Linus has become very metro recently and he is a very trendy metrosexual! You see, Linus used to look like a complete dork. But now, if I was a faggot, I would be all over this guy today! In the meantime, I'm sure Linus is getting his share of the booth babes...
;)
