Freshmeat can send you a mail on new releasesFreshmeat lets you subscribe to notification of new releases of the Linux kernel. They send you a mail each time a new version is released.
Shameless plug: Or you could subscribe to some of my projects

Open Source Licenses are so confusing...With all these different Open Source licenses and legalese involved, it is so difficult to determine an appropriate license for http://freshmeat.net/ai/ and for http://sourceforge.net/projects/mind/ that a perhaps dangerously naive Public Domain license has remained in place by default -- even as the ominous specter rears its head of a potential military take-over of the Open Source artificial intelligence project, as evidenced by these recent logs of access by military domains to the www.scn.org/~mentifex/ AI Home Page:

for those peopel who are gload to
promptly know that the software they use has been improved and fixed-
you should really check out freshmeat then. it's purpose is to let people know when software is updated. i even think fm will email you a digest so you dont even have to go there.
i suppose there are people who do not know about freshmeat and that is why they use slashdot for this purpose.
so for those not familar with it, freshmeat can be found at: www.freshmeat.net
using /. to find out about new software is sort of like using a jackhammer to put a nail in a piece of wood. -
Re:Slowness and SDLfyi moderators: parent is a valid question.. I've seen the issue first hand. i've seen questions asked about it on the mailing lists and the answer was something like (I don't remember who from) "why do you need to do that anyway?"
But besides that, using SDL for one of my meager projects has been nice. I only wish it could come out of the box on some platforms.

LokiHi Sam.
First, thanks for SDL and SMPEG. They ran mpg321 very well for a while. Thanks, too, for your development help.
I know you probably get asked this a lot, but as a loyal Loki customer I just have to know: now that you and most other Loki programmers have moved on to bigger and better things, in your opinion does Loki have a chance in continuing to produce Linux games?

Re:Synaptic Uses?
Actualy, you can use alien to convert debrpm.
If you are already using Conectiva Linux 7.0, just do apt-get install alien . -
Freshmeat?
I don't know, but at first glance, it looks like they patented Freshmeat.

Re:QuickBasic, anyone? No, Basic is the wrong direction entirely.
If we want a decent language for the new millennium, we should go for APL. Fast, concise, and an ideal teaching language (note that the link is to APlus, a blend of APL and C which is apparently used by the Morgan Stanley investment bank). True, modern computers don't come with keyboards with enough keys to program it, but we can overcome that with overlays.
Alternatively, I'd love to see someone try web scripting in Brainfuck (advantages: simple, clear, easy to write an interpreter), or Befunge (break out of the depressing paradigms of modern languages! Truely adds a new dimension to program code).

curl and libcurl already exist...I wonder if the choice of their name matters to the Daniel Stenberg and company, the folks developing the open-source curl and libcurl software. It's a utility similar to wget.
http://freshmeat.net/projects/curl/
http://freshmeat.net/redir/curl/1612/url_homepage/ Anyway, this other new curl plugin brings to mind those several kernels of popcorn in the bottom of the bag that will never pop. The internet has many such kernels.

Re:Need hardware players and conversion tools
Like many others, I agree that the only way you'll get good quality Ogg files is to re-rip from CD. Though, if you already have an existing mp3 collection one of the easiest ways to convert them is to use a script/program such as Oggasm ( http://freshmeat.net/projects/oggasm/ ). It'll do the conversion for you with a lot of nice options including the preservation of ID3 tags. No, it's not my project. I just use it.

old news, no news
and besides,
/. has sometimes a kinda freshmeat tone.. see here (freshmeat release announcment, 03 August 2001).
In fact, the only interesting part is the funny comments around the name... and of course, all the fuss about Taco's quote, at the end... -
ARGH!!!! 3D + TV-Out: Impossible under Linux?No small appliances include 3D hardware, good sound, and TV-out. Because of that, setting up a multimedia device requires adding additional cards. For sound, there are many choices. For video, there are no choices that are compatable with Linux and support both;
- I. 3D (good, current-generation)
II. TV-out (RCA and/or S-video)
That's why you see tech sites talking about how to make your own TIVO-style device, or how to make a traveling MP3 jukebox, but none that mention 3D games. Only Nokia's planned Media Terminal is supposed to have both, and adding a VGA-to-RCA converter isn't cheap.
Think that Nvidia, ATI, or Matrox have this fixed? Nope.
At first glance, most of the
/. minions out there will probably say "big deal". Well, smarty pants, I dare you. I dare all of you all. Find such a card. After much searching, it turns out that you can have either 3D or TV-out, but not both.Any GeForce, Radeon, or G400 can pump out great 3D. Some -- but not all -- can be tweaked to output video to a standard TV using the Linux frame buffer...but in the process, you loose all 3D hardware acceleration.
Yow. Scratch 3D.
Enable 3D, and the TV-out ports aren't supported.
As for projects that are actively attempting to address the TV-out problem, they do exist. Sourceforge hosts a few, and Freshmeat has pointers to a few more. None have it licked, though. Most TV-out ports have some propriatory muck that makes supporting them difficult at best. If we're lucky, one of these companies will release a Macrovision-encrusted, binary-only, x86, version sometime in the next couple years.
How depressing...what was the story about the Zerox printer driver? How is it that 20+ years later, something so trivial is still a sticking point.

That's why I suggested people install pinfo. Did I mention that it's a colorful ncurses app with lynx-like keybindings?

It's about ART stupid !I think can speculate as to the basis of the author's desire for leadership. Here is all this energy and talent out there doing a million different things, each with their own motivations and agendas. One need only go as far as to look as some open source repositories, such as SourceForge.net. I suspect that the author would like to see an authoritative body that says, okay Joe, you work in X, Sally, you on Y. You know, bring it under some form of project management.
But while you're looking at places like FreshMeat.net, you might also notice that many of these endeavours reflect the wide variety personalities and desires that comprise the Open Source movement. In other words, in many ways, many Open Source softwares are the unique artistic expression of the individuals behind them. Instead of stroking paint and palette, we blast bits and bytes. And instead of museums and art stores, we the internet and individual computers as our showplace.
My fear is that bringing Open Source under a centralized effort _MAY_ have as chilling effect as Communism did on the arts in the former Soviet Union.

Re:Why I don't use Linux here in Brazil
You can definitely use Debian. You can build floppies for the minimum install, then finish the install using network. I installed on a P133, 16M of RAM.
It is my belief it would run on 486, but I haven't tried.
On the other hand, the latest RH would not install on my 16Mb RAM computer.
Anyway, Freshmeat will give you a whole bunch of light linux distros. -

Linux as an antivirus tool.
It's been said by many many times: Linux makes an excellent antivirus tool. Why? Well, because...it's Linux. But really, because of it's immunity to viruses in the first place. (Let's ignore the spread of things like ramen as they work differently than Outlook Transmitted Diseases (OTDs))
Linux as you mail server? Check out Enhancing E-Mail Security With Procmail to send this nasty crap to /dev/null automatically. If the user can't run it in the first place...
How about taking it a step further and having you Linux box scan all incoming e-mail for virisus? See Amavis and others
If you're using Linux as your file server, invest in some linux based antivirus software. Let linux scan away at your uses Windows files and keep them virus free using an OS they can't infect in the first place.
If you're a network admin, and you don't take counter measures from preventing your users from infecting themselves and others, your a part of the problem as the virus writer. Educate your users, use counter measure that prevent your users from getting the virus in the first place, etc. etc. etc. -

45 seconds to encode an mp3!??
Wow. They should check out GOGO. It's originally based on LAME, with major portions of the code rewritten in assembly for speed. It takes advantage of SMP as well, and my dual PIII-550 can encode an average length song in 15-17 seconds using variable bitrate encoding at 128kbps or 192kbps. Granted, I don't know how well nasm would fair on a Mac (probably not at all), but it's a great tool for x86.

Linux needs a real-time scheduler!
There is a lot of good stuff here. Some of the more useful and general-purpose patches -- such as VLAN, TUX, and Software Suspend -- should get a chance to become mainstream. The various IPC and speed improvements should make it in, too.
There's currently a debate over which real-time scheduler is the best. Personally, I'd like to see it resolved in the same way as the other options with choices: let all of them be integrated into the mainstream, and let the user select which one to use, either at compile or boot time! I'd like to see an option in the kernel configuration, asking what real-time scheduler you wanted: MontaVista, RTLinux, RTSched, Linux-SRT, RTAI, DWCS, something else, or simply the default.
Linux needs a real-time scheduler today. Currently, things become choppy whenever it decides to service the system in some way, such as syncing the disk. Playing movies, audio/video recording, burning CD's, even playing games would benefit from real-time support. I hope that this can become mainstream in 2.6!

Of course, where you can't find projects to fulfill your needs, of course one would want to look at Freeware/Public Domain and Shareware programs. Although, I would hope that eventually a number of these programmers would be willing to opensource their projects.

I highly recommend the following Freeware (for non-commercial use) graphics viewer/editor:

i heard that iomojo is adding telephony support, quicknet cards and others. this should be an nice opensource option for people wanting to get free voip with video capabilities.

Its possible .. with enough time.
It is possible to install an awfull lot of GNU/Open Source programs on Windows.
The hard part is spending the time to track down clones of the software you want, or software that is good in its own right.
I suppose the biggest thing you need to think about is the kind of software you want:
- You want graphics - get The Gimp
- You want an editor - Get Emacs
- You want encryption - Get GNU PG
- You want music - Get FreeAmp
Start at one of the meta-repositories, such as Freshmeat, or GNUSoftware.com - and search around.
With enough time, and patience, you can go a very long way..

What I want in a browser.Konq without X is cool but how about Netscape without X? You may ask yourself why. In order to access my bank online I have to use Netscape or IE. I am command line only at home and would love to have a framebufferd browser that is usable for this so I don't have to wait till I get to work and use one of their browsers. zen is a browser that will compile for gtk, qt or work from the framebuffer but its totaly useless for anything other than viewing a static page.
I want to see more development on command line only browsers to take advantage of older hardware or for people like myself who are GUI-impaired. One of the nice bennies of more development would be one could do $ getbankballence.sh | netscape --prompt4password. Now wouldn't that be cool in cron.

Bashprompt.
Bashprompt, the original BASHISH was cool. I helped the project a little, providing screen captures of the themes, and making a theme of my own for bashprompt. Their server was recently cracked, and they've run out of funding. Lets all pitch in and save this project. Mods: mod this one up please, thx

Re:Why...
There is a thing called Evolution. Getting Linux to talk to an Exchange server will probably never, ever happen, however. What we need is a full-featured PIM like Outlook/Exchange -- what sucks though is that I see more and more little all Linux/UNIX programming firms getting eaten up by bigger corporations who let their developers have their *nix on their desktop but then replace their servers with NT. And then they all get an old P-200 with Windows on it for Outlook aside their Sparcstation. It's a weird step sideways or something, but seems to be happening here in the US as firms consolidate.

Re: Ident through NAT
wow, that's a lot of trouble to go through for identd. personally i just use either fake identd or null identd. both allow you to have ident send an arbitrary string that satifies IRC servers.
both of these utilities are a testiment to how useless ident is for any purpose. it's far too easy to fake an ident response.

Re:About leakageYes, some (most?) BOFHs are idiots. Well... and at least this essay at freshmeat "The Egoless Admin" proves that I'm not alone with this opinion.
Well, but you are right: Additionally to the typical BOFH - who is far too lazzy to setup encryption - there also is a group clueless baby-admins - who simply don't know that there is something like encryption and that crackers and worms are more than cock-and-bull stories...

I've long said this. Subscriptions are the way to go. I'm up for the FreeBSD one

Converting WordPerfect to whatever
I am looking for a word processor. It must be able to understand WordPerfect, as I have several important documents in older WP formats.
wp2x will convert WordPerfect 5 documents to HTML, TeX, etc. From there, you can use StarOffice.

Security, Outlook Transmitted Diseases's, etc...
I just skimmed things a bit, but somewhat suprised not to see topics like ssl and smtp-auth. I know I would have loved to see something like "your mail server is your first line of defence for Outlook Transmitted Diseases," but since it's mostly a procmail thing maybe it's mentioned. I encourage ever e-mail administrator to at least look at Email Security through Procmail. By using this, I've managed to keep my network OTD free.

Re:two cents
I've found that by taking an xterm, making the window huge (something on the order of 200x100 chars) and running links, one can get a pretty darn decent text-only web browsing experience. It does tables and formatting very nicely, as opposed to lynx. -
Re:Likelihood of .NET and hailstorm success is low
Hum her hah. I'm a bit divided over this.
MY data is one SOMEONE ELSE's machine.
A lot of my friends use MSN Messenger and Hotmail. My friends that used to use only ICQ are now either MSN and ICQ users, or use MSN exclusively now.
Why I mention this is that MSN Messenger and ICQ has different views of where to store data. MSN is all on the server, while ICQ is all on the user's machine. Different perspectives on computing.
They have their merit, and Messenger seems to be the favourite. On ICQ I would continually hear
... I'm about to format my computer. Send me a message in an hour if you want to be on my new list. Aw, but I deleted my old list, send me a message so I can add you again.Messenger doesn't have this trouble because MSN looks after your list. I go to a cybercafe 12 hours drive away and PACHOW my list downloads and its just like being at home, or just like using my mate's computer, or just like using my Dad's computer.
Although I like ICQ because I can hack the client and add people to my list without their authorisation, there are strong reasons why server-side is good for some applications.
No no no I will not store my MP3s or private documents on a third parties computer. Driveway.com and iDrive both bit me when they terminated their file sharing.
But you can have my MSN Messenger list. I don't mind.

Re:Why not upgrade to windows?
No download managers? Hmmm. I did the simplest of searches on freshmeat and found plenty.
Not sure how his friend searched - maybe he typed in "mownload danager" or something :) -
Re:Why not upgrade to windows?a search by a friend of mine on freshmeat turned up 3 KDE front ends to packet sniffers and no download managers - and so is not really a business/server or desktop OS due to lack of software.
Although KDE has no download managers, it does a greater range of religious software than is available for another platform, including a handy bible study program and a biblical quote generator. Therefore, rather than being the OS of "1337 h4x0rs", Linux is the OS of all good, honest God-fearing people. Rather than being a "strange anomoly", Linux is an operating system with impeccable moral credentials and is the obvious choice for all good citizens. And, as we all know, the only people who need privacy and products such as Zero-Knowledge are those evil scoundrels who have something to hide. Therefore, the fact that the Linux community, with its inherent honesty and strong belief in the teachings of Christ, shunned Zero-Knowledge is no real surprise.
