    I always thought it was really cool of Volition to release the source code to Freespace 2 after Interplay's demise. It's allowed a whole ton of custom mods and campaigns that I'm still playing today, 12 years after the game's release. Textures and effects were updated by the mod community and a lot of the new campaigns include new ships or weapons. Some of the best include:

    Beyond The Red Line (BSG conversion with Newtonian physics)
    Blue Planet
    The Procyon Insurgency
    The Babylon Project (Babylon 5 conversion)

    They can be found. For example, Beyond the Red Line is a Battlestar Galactica total conversion of the FreeSpace2 engine. It's a simulator, though - the Cylons will push your flying skills. More projects using the Freespace engine can be found at Hard Light Productions.

    The Emperor's Hammer project looks lovely, but seems to be making only slow progress. The Beyond the Red Line people have a wicked demo out. I've only peeked at the Wing Commander project. God bless Freespace 2.

    You may be in luck... have you heard of the Freespace 2 Source Code Project? Basically, FS2 is now open source; not only can you play FS2 in full for free, you can also modify it. Gamers are having a field day with it. I'm pretty sure there's work being done on an X-Wing game, though my sights are fixed more closely on a total conversion based on the new Battlestar Galactica series.

    I love the freespace2 SCP although i wish they could've supported linux too. freespace2 had one of the most brilliant story lines and game engines i've ever seen. The babylon project, is admittedly pretty awesome but since you're a fan I figured you'd also be interested in the new battle star galactica mod that's due out soon =) http://www.game-warden.com/bsg/
