Re:I want my Hemos and CmdrTaco nude pics!!!
Is there something wrong with the After Y2K Slashdot Gladiators poster? Or this classic pool shot?

OT: An inside look......at Rob's busy schedule.
Sorry for the WOB, but I was reminded of the above After Y2K comic when I read this:
I'm a fairly busy person, and to me this sounded like a godsend: I could tape shows that aired while I was at work or away on business...
Take care,
Steve

Jon Katz is now a cartoon character.Jon Katz has been Nitrozac'd!
In today's cartoon over on After Y2K, he appears in pixelated form... OMG

A question we're dying to know...
So far, Nitrozac hasn't featured you as a character in her cartoon After Y2K.
Considering she had included such geeky Linux celebrities as Linus Torvalds, Eric Raymond, and Rob and Hemos, does this bug you, or effect your business decisions in any way, and how far would you go in order to get her to include you?
In fact, isn't it true that the whole Corel Linux thing is just an attempt to be immortalized in After Y2K? -

Re:Some further speculation
how can you say transmeta is not driven by their marketing department? This secrecy has been the marketer's dream... everyone in the technosphere has been debating their merits endlessly. People have attributed to them everything from an Athlon-killer to a giant reality-altering abacus.
engineers, maybe. but marketing-savvy, too.

Hear, hear! (drifting OT)
People learn by being stretched, not by being pampered.
This bears repeating. It's somewhat related to my language-clarity mini-rant here; there is a need to actually do (practice) mental work of any kind to become good at it.Just like muscles, the brain has to be worked to stay strong.

Re:The women won't have a say...The first computer coders were women.
As recently pointed up by Nitrozac (herself a major geek-babe) in After Y2Y. This is their first "in-person" appearence in the strip.
Hedy Lamarr (besides being a sex symbol) helped design and patent spread-spectrum wireless technologies that were half a century ahead of their time.
Not that far ahead. Her scheme for spread spectrum (also known as frequency hopping) involved synchronizing frequencies using player-piano rolls. She in fact got the idea while playing a piano duet with one of her children. A truly innovative idea, but one well within the technology of the time.

RMS in Playboy
This is exactly what I was thinking.
If Verne "Mini-Me" Troyer can make it into a many-page pictoral for Christmas as "Mini-Hef" ...
...why can't we have "St IGNUcius' Happy Happy hacking run"?
Starring the girls of the mansion as the The Techno-Talking Babes(TM)? -
What's it like being Nitrozac'd?
Have you ever seen Nitrozac's web comic After Y2K?
Your cartoon duplicate plays a recurring role, and often has the best lines :) . I know Nitrozac is a big fan of Woz, are you by chance a fan of Nitrozac, and what's it like being such an inspiration to other geeks. -
Re:Nitrozac's After Y2k will continue!
Well, the Techno-Talking Babes have tried to fix reality and returned to their own future, but they will not be able to see the alternative reality that we are living in because of the "Real Millennium Bug" reacting with the effects of the chrono-tidal wave that whipped the TTB's back in their world (?). The Geek did have a problem with his abacus, after all.

Nitrozac's After Y2k will continue!
I'm a big fan of Nitrozac's comic... I think it's one of the smartest and funniest things to come out of the 20th century.
What's bugging me lately, besides that millennium thingy... is why do normally intelligent people (including Cmdr Taco) assume the comic will be ending? (Nitrozac has made it very clear that it won't be ending, and that the comic will continue!)
Perhaps they suffer from some kind of Y2-Brain Bug that prevents them from reading the first word of a two word title? After all...the comic is called After Y2K!
Oh Nitrozac... cheers on standing up to the agalmatophilic idiots that try their hardest to spoil things around here! All the best in the New Year! -

Linux domain names and takeovers
As a solution to the shortage of Linux domain names, why not ask ICANN to add a
.linux or .lin domain name? We could all get our Linux domain names easily, and Linux help and resources would be easier to find.
Also, why would anyone really worry that linuxbob.com is taken? Does this really matter? Unless a Linux Guru named Bob wants a domain name, why worry about it? I can understand linuxpop.com, and all of the other ones.
Internet.com's takeover is just another sign that Linux is becoming mainstream. Internet.com realized that they weren't on the Linux bandwagon, and they wanted to be. The buyout also foreshadows things to come. Linux distros and resource sites will be bought up like crazy. Don't be suprised if Symantec or some other fairly powerful Windows products company buys a distro (not Red Hat, because of it's market power, but SuSE, Mandrake, etc.).
Hey, could anyone do me a favor? I'm in this contest for a look-a-like of a character in after Y2k, this comic strip. Could anyone go to http: //www.geekculture.com/geekycomics/Aftery2k/lookali kecontest/gallery.html and vote for geek number 1? Please? -
Geek Bunker 2000Since there seems to be so much complaining about the supposed brainpower of the people involved in MTV's latest publicity stunt, maybe someone ought to put together Geek Bunker 2000. Forget putting Bill Gates and Linus Torvalds in an underground fortress.... let's just put a bunch of jaded, acrimonious Slashdot readers, who could argue about "Winbl0w$", what Linux distro to use after the apocalypse, and the relative merits of Palm colors.
I don't know... a bunch of MTV people trapped in an underground bunker.... really, the thought holds a certain appeal for me, if only because it reminds me of that old Twilight Zone where Burgess Meredith gets trapped in that library during the Apocalypse and then breaks his glasses. Imagine the looks on their faces when the power goes out and they realize No One Is Watching Them. At that point, it's just a short countdown to Lord of the Flies.

The crime that is commercial web design.
IMHO, it's not just Fox that are at fault here, it's commerical "web design" in general. Ever notice how places like PCWeek, Altavista, mp3.com, and many -- many -- others use pages replete with br and such to force the 640x480 look on people? Most of the time it's not even centred, forcing me to stare at the left 30% of my monitor.
There is no excuse why this should be. Give me my content, give it to me nicely, and, damnit, let me view it in my browser window at proper scaling. There was an artcle on some site about Slashdot long ago. I had to use Opera to magnify the page view 300% for it to show the "content" at a decent size in my 1024x768 desktop. When I started using Linux exclusively (with Windows as a glorfied Nintendo), the problem was exacerbated by the simple fact that the pages designed to look great at 640x480 also assumed a bunch of fonts (which I did later setup, thanks to the ttf font server in the Slackware contrib dir).
Why bother to take the time, spend lots of your company moola, only to come up with a hard-coded, useless, junky site?
Flash? Great -- what's the point? Slow downloads suck, and I'm on a cable modem! The only site I've seen to use Flash in a compelling way (in terms of "mainstream" sites), is After Y2K. With Cascading Style Sheets, it is trivial to implement really nice looking sites that scale well. Netscape, Opera, and (gahck) IE support CSS very well, as does Mozilla. With Lynx, it's a non-issue ;-)
If anyone doesn't understand what I mean, go look at my webserver (Thock.com) for an example of how I write my HTML (which is all hand written, and generally tested well). I'll also welcome any comments anyone has on my HTML, I am writing an HTML primer, and related, documents for the webserver.

Hacker Hats are really neat
Hacker Hats
are pretty cool. I got one with a propellor and I love it. It lets me join that long geek tradition of wearing a beanie, but still appear menacing to my boss. ;-)
I'll let the ad speak for itself....
"Our caps aren't like those goofy joke ones you'll feel like a nerd wearing. ;-) These are the Rolls Royces of Propellor Caps, ...quality beanies for seriously fashion-conscious geeks!" -
I'm in awe!
I'm in awe too, even before Y2K!

What does Illiad look like?
As I browsed the After Y2K page, I saw a picture of what is supposed to be Illiad. Is that what Illiad is supposed to look like? What is the source picture Nitrozac for that drawing anyways?
-
Don't worry....
After the Andover.net IPO, Hemos can afford a huge mansion.... perhaps like the one Bill Gates has. Just make sure the bathroom is Y2K compliant .
Seriously.... I hope everything turns out ok for you, Hemos.

A wonderful essay, it fills me with dread.
At what point am I going to stop just reading about the culture and the people (else) and all the neat toys and actually become a geek myself? This sort of work depresses me in a big way - I have nothing to show for all the effort I put into learning the systems and languages. Sure, I'm only 2nd year university, and I never even thought much about writing software before last year (except in vague fantasies)!
At the same time, though, I think reading things like this extensively before even starting any of my planned projects (and I've been planning and planning!) will ultimately help me do the right thing in all the things I do.
One can hope, anyway!

Nitrozac explains TransMeta.
Nitrozac has the real answers, check out her TransMeta Secret Lab.
She also revealed they have discovered the entrance to the Hollow Earth... I believe her. -
What's it like being immortalized ...as a cartoon?
And now, the really important question everyone wants to ask... What is it like being immortalized as a cartoon character on Nitrozac's After Y2K! Looking buff by the way!
Oh, will you be speaking at Abacus World Expo? ;-) -

Coming Cyberclysm? Sounds Familiar...
A Cyberclysm...is that anything like the Geek Apocalypse?
-
I don't think so.
I really think that many of the people who believe humanity will destroy itself via Cyberclysm are extremists. I find myself have a hard time even imagining it. Not that I don't recognize society's dependence on technology, electricity in particular.
I see advances in this kind of technology as tools and venues of entertainment. Technology has great potential for increasing productivity, such as the computer. The problem is when they are not properly implemented (such as bad, unreliable software *ahem*).
My computer has replaced television. I don't own a TV, I own a TV card, which I will occasionally hook up to a VCR or a pair of rabbit-ears, but I do not subscribe to cable TV, and I certainly don't watch ten hours worth of shows. I wouldn't skim five hundred channels, even if I could. That saves me twelve hours already!
Most things I can see on TV I can find on the Internet. The same goes with the newspaper, except when I read /. or other news sources, I can easier narrow the content to what interests me, and the news is normally much more recent (as in a can pick up a newspaper, scan the front page and check off the articles "old news, old news, old news").
I'm a computer engineering student. I don't own a cell phone, or a pager, and I don't need one. My personal telephone dates back to the Calgary Olympics. The _only_ thing hooked up to the Internet is my computer. I intend to buy a PDA, but only to replace my less convenient pen-and-paper agenda. I don't own a car, nor do I have regular access to one.
I will admit that there so many unnecessary gadgets out there. But they are not inherently wrong. It is only the misuse and growing dependence on these gadgets that could bring down humanity. As for me, if the Cyberclysm happens in my lifetime, I'll look forward to the Abacus World Expo (see After Y2K for details). -

Well, this explains the Nolton Nash reference

Now, I doubt she's in Saskatchewan (know on wood).
But then, I'm willing to move ;-)

Questions for Nitrozac from an After Y2K Fan
What do you think of the Nitrozac Boot Squad? Does it sometimes worry you having all these pale and pasty geeks with flabby bottoms with fetishes for your feet? (And knees, and hands, and hair)
Do you get a lot of slack for running a Mac? Have you any plans to switch to Linux soon?
Do you consider yourself a techno-talking babe? Where did you get the idea for the techno-talking babes, are they based on anyone you know, or did you just make them up?
When are you going to have more comics of Linus Torvalds back on there? Mm.. -
Re:The babes
Um, at least Bambi and Dawn are both of African descent (see today's strip).
The ancestry of the TTB's isn't mentioned in any of the strips. However, Nitrozac did mention a couple of them on the message board.
It's certainly not mentioned in today's strip, which involves Dawn and the geek looking at a fly.
