Re:Compile to JS vs WebASM
What's actually wrong with Javascript as a compile target?
WebAssembly is conceived to go beyond what JavaScript can currently offer to better support more languages. The future features are of particular interest.
-
If I had to compile to JS I'd look at emscripten
If I had to compile to JS I like to think I could use emscripten, but not being involved in such a project I'm not sure how well it works. When it's supported by the browser, it's designed to strip away most of the layers of crap we've put between ourselves and the machine. IIRC, you can get half the speed of native C by running C compiled to JS this way. Once again though, the browser has to support it. I think in theory it can support any language that LLVM supports on the front end; but I think they've only tested it with C and C++.
Anyway, if you're starting a new project I don't see why you'd want to use a language designed just for compiling to JS when you could use something more general purpose that will potentially run very fast with the proper compiler.

- DETEKT
What is Detekt and how does it work?
"Detekt is a free tool that scans your computer for traces of known surveillance spyware used by governments to target and monitor human rights defenders and journalists around the world. By alerting them to the fact that they are being spied on, they will have the opportunity to take precautions.
It was developed by security researchers and has been used to assist in Citizen Lab's investigations into government use of spyware against human rights defenders, journalists and activists as well as by security trainers to educate on the nature of targeted surveillance.
Amnesty International is partnering with Privacy International, Digitale Gesellschaft and the Electronic Frontier Foundation to release Detekt to the public for the first time."

"Why are we releasing a new version of Detekt?
Since its first release last year, some cases have been successfully identified with Detekt. Leaked information from Hacking Team in July 2015 revealed the source code of the current version of Hacking Team RCS[2] - prompting the company to announce it be discontinuing this product and introducing a new version by the end of the year. However, Hacking Team's older software may still remain in use by Hacking Team's customers. We hope that this updated version of Detekt may help to surface new cases of attacks against human rights activists, journalists and others."

VistA is a nightmare
i was interested in VistA and what all the fuss was about, so i decided to check it out. turns out the backend is nightmare code that would would swear was machine generated. after some investigation i found out it's MUMPS (Massachusetts General Hospital Utility Multi-Programming System) code. a lot of useful stuff started way back in the 1970s... but MUMPS is a 1960s nightmare come to life.
think i'm exagerating? here's a module from VistA's code which was apparently updated in 1989.

Remember this is Slashdot, so if someone cites "design flaws" without any more detail I'm going to assume they don't understand the design space and are unreasonably expecting perfection along an arbitrary line that represents some specific use case of theirs that most people don't even care about.
Remember this is the internets, and if you can't use google, you're gonna have a bad time.

We need to use Rust NOW!
God damn it, each time I have to patch one of these kinds of bugs it reminds of how we need to start rewriting all of our software in Rust. Face it, Rust is the future. Rust will soon be the only option. If you don't know what Rust is then let me quote to you from its home page: "Rust is a systems programming language that runs blazingly fast, prevents nearly all segfaults, and guarantees thread safety." Rust is developed by some of the best programmers out there, including Patrick Walton and Steve Klabnik. Now that we have Rust I don't think that there is any need for C, C++ or even Ada. Rust is the language to use from now on.

Re:Kickstarter forever
o/t for story but o/t (wait, why do they both start with an 'o'?), I hope you have seen David Hilton's repo of libraries and example programs for the HexBright.
https://github.com/dhiltonp/he...Unfortunately nobody ever got around to making some modules for the visual coding platforms out there, and with the designer of HexBright essentially having called it quits, there's not much motivation to do so now, but if you get stuck, try some of the code in that repo, or drop by on freenode (IRC), channel #hexbright

Use TextSecure / SMSSecure
It'll give you a warning before stagefright is used
https://github.com/WhisperSyst...
you can find SMSSecure on f-droidAlso check to make sure hangouts isn't using mms (just to be on the safe side)

Re:How to Disable Stagefright?
from this git entry I would suspect meta data parsing errors.
so in
/system/boot.prop (root required)
media.stagefright.enable-meta=false
media.stagefright.enable-scan=false
However, one cannot be sure about this.

Re: Scripts that interact with passwords fields aw
Keepass is also (correct me if I'm wrong: I'd love to hear there is another) the only password manager I know of which is fully cross platform.
I like keepass, especially since there are so many ports of it to so many platforms. However, if someone is looking for something more akin to lastpass, here's a few open source ones:
https://clipperz.is/ - clipperz seems most similar IMO. It's open source and all in the browser via javascript, thought signup and site desire are a little wonky.
http://www.fpx.de/fp/Software/... - Password Gorilla (also on github: https://github.com/zdia/gorill...). It's also open source, but it's a TCL/TK application. I'm not sure what their andriod status is (there is some info on their site regarding use of HECL to port the TCL parts to android, but I don't know the status).
https://www.passpack.com/ - Passpack works on chrome, firefox, ie, and safari. It's similar to lastpass in many ways. It's not fully open source, but they did open source a bunch of the libraries they use/made (aes/rindael, xxtea, json2, sha-256 in js, etc: https://code.google.com/p/pass... ).
https://www.passlet.com/ - passlet. The SSL cert for that site expired in 2010, so I don't think I'd use this, but it is cross platform and built according to the host-proof-hosting concepts. They open sourced their PBKDF2 methods: http://anandam.name/pbkdf2/
http://aaronboodman.com/halfno... - halfnote is just a notepad, but it's encrypted in browser, and it's open source (https://code.google.com/p/halfnote/)
All that said, I'd probably stick with keepass and/or lastpass.

Re:How about this...
But when you're designing your codec with one hand tied behind your back, it's not going to work as efficiently.
Unless someone like Cisco offers their IPR under royalty-free terms in new video codec. Then you can experiment with those techniques in your codec and working together develop a codec which combines best features of both, similar to how OPUS was developed.
