Re:great
It all only does that because you let them. Other mail services and search engines are available. And my GPS unit of choice already tells me about the next TravelLodge or petrol station and is going to be more dynamic in future. Unless I get bored with it and sell it to someone who's lost or something.

You sure didGizmondo http://www.gizmondo.com/ is a windows device that does the same job, you can judge for yourself the games, but its ulikely any of them are going to distract many(if any). So I think mentioning linux like you have is a bit of a misnomer, and really created a false impression.
More realisticaly compared to the PSP/DS, its not even trying to compete with them on the gaming front. It would be foolish to try. It doesn't even have a 3D graphics chip in it.
Your statement misses the point, because it says where are the games well http://www.happypenguin.org/ has quite a few, ok nothing that will put a dent in GTA:SA sales but most available for free.
How about those that want to write a game themselves, for a games machine, they now can, because *finally* there is one, really there hasn't been device like it before(unless you count its predecesser) without some sort of hack, certainly not with this much ease.
Also its not a games device its a commodity media device with video/music abilities, which are more than capable of competing with any of the alternatives(Phones/PDA). Having games on there as well just puts all the media content through in one place, and better designed for this.
ALthough I'm sure you are aware of all the Games/Ports/Engines/Emulators that are already available for Linux. That look very nice on a little handheld.

Re:It's the Games, Stupid
MS's entry (well, not really, but it DOES use a MS operating system) would be the Gizmondo. It's a do-all device, even more so than the PSP - heck, it's even got a GPS, Bluetooth and a GPRS modem! (Can you say "FREEPING CREATURISM!"?)
It doesn't have many games, though, and I didn't see any big-name franchises (which make or break a console - look at the GP32. Technically superior to the GBA, but have you heard of it? No - there's no big franchises, that's why (and it's a chicken-egg, as well)). -
Re:A portable mini-entertainment centerLooks to me like they are marketing this as a portable mini-entertainment center. By including the Spiderman 2 movie, they are differentiating themselves from other handhelds.
More like jumping on the bandwagon.

Re:Pre-order on Amazon.co.ukWait, wait... why is the UK getting it on the 18th?
Because there is more competition in the UK market.

Re:with this price"It would be easy to write the Gizmondo..."
That Gizmondo sounds like a very interesting device indeed, bascially the PocketPC equivalent of the Tapwave. That 400mhz Samsung ARM processor should be impressive since the 266mhz Samsung ARM processor in pocketpcs ran games about as fast as a 400mhz Intel chip. GPS, camera, mp3 and movie player all in one.
However at $400+ it'll never sell, no way no how, not when the PSP can be had for $250 with it's excellent range of titles. But if it had a cellphone too...
Remember folks it's not the size it's how you use it, or in this case, it's not the processing power it's the titles. Look how well the b&w gameboy did for years, crushing all competition that was faster with color.

Re:with this price
Three handhelds will be with us this year, the DS, the PSP and an outsider, the Gizmondo.
Out of the three I think the PSP is the most likely to succeed. Sony's strategy is very similar to that of the first playstation, they don't want Nintendo's market, they want to open up handheld to a new more mainstream demographic. The Game Boy, while succesful, has always been seen as a childs toy. The PSP with its sexy design, playstation type games and ability to play movies will appeal to the same 15 - 25 male demographic that has made the playstation so successful.
The DS will also be succesful due to the current large Game Boy fanbase. However I predict that as Sony open the market up Nintendo's dominant share of that market will decline an they may well lose customers to the PSP if it gains enough momentum.
It would be easy to write the Gizmondo off but its GPS features (cheap for its price) mean it could well find a market amongst older people. It could open up a new 25 - 35 year old market, people who use its navigation functions but also want games, music and film. However I do think there is a risk of the Nintendo and Sony marketing machines making the Gizmondo seem invisible.
There are other factors which could affect the outcome of this handheld war. Most notably there are question marks over the PSP's battery life and loading times, these are things that shouldn't be underestimated. -
The Gizmondo Might Be It
Actually, the Gizmondo portable console may be Microsoft's low risk (for them) answer to the portable gaming market. It was recently announced that they will be developing games for this console. Gizmondo is built around a powerful 400MHz ARM9 CPU and runs a version of Windows CE.

Re:Short range?
I have a 100m device in my desktop as well. It seems to be capable of that, and yeah, it's quite enough. Plus, 100m isn't non-standard, either. It's just Class 1 Bluetooth, which you will probably never see in a portable device.
:-)Most other devices IRL are Class 3 (10m), but I've been seeing a few Class 2 (25m) devices around the place. The Gizmondo game console-slash-phone has it, giving it a rather nice range between devices. But it makes me wonder how much power the thing chews through to get that extra space (plus, how often do you really need to play against someone who is a whole 25m away?)

How about the Gizmondo (released by Tiger Telematics)?
Sure it's not the same company, but hey... you've seen one tiger, you've seen them all right?
PDRoms also has some nice Game&Watch stuff (here's a list from the comp).
Failing that, go buy a DS and all the Game & Watch carts ;) -
Gizmondo
Why must the title of "Best Handheld" go to Nintendo of Sony? Another very overlooked device that will also be showcased at E3 is the Gizmondo by Tiger Telemantics. This unit contains a 400Mhz ARM9 processor with a 2.8" TFT color screen running Windows CE. Although its primary selling point will be gaming, it also functions as a camera, mp3 player, movie player, and messaging system. Some of the more interesting features are built in GPS, GPRS, and Bluetooth capabilities. I personally think this will be a very nifty device...and if they can release some decent gaming titles, this could potentially go head to head with Sony or Nintendo. Check it out: Gizmondo
