Re:Oops
We must mix in different circles then because most developers I know use Eclipse/Visual Studio/emacs/vim.
Thankfully so. I wouldn't touch Java with a bargepole.
Here for example is a photo from a Ruby on Rails conference.

Re:There's nothing wrong now...
But the interface still sucks. I've used 8.1 as my primary desktop OS for almost a year now (Stock install, no Start Menu third party add-ons), and while it's a solid OS, there's still so much missing from the Metro interface.
Recently used documents is the thing I miss the most.
And just exploring through the tree-based Start Menu is something I really miss. I end up with so much stuff installed I forget some of it. Would occasionally just surf thru the Start menu to re-discover stuff. But with 8.1, if you don't remember it, you're not going to find it. Sure you can go page by page through all the listed stuff, but that's far more inefficient than being able to walk through a tree-based menu.
Does "Start Menu Classic" still work on Win8.1 ? I remember using it on Win8 for a little while before I went back to Win7 on my gaming box.
I think the main question on everyone's mind, though, is whether Win8.1 counts as a major "release" or not so we'll know where Win10 falls in the "good / shit" cycle: http://www.globalnerdy.com/wor... .
Though I guess we're damned either way... if Win8.1 counts as the "good" release, then Win10 will be "shit". If Win8/Win8.1 collectively count as the "shit" release in the cycle, then MS might have just skipped Win9 "good" to get to Win10 "shit".

Re:Human Nature and Avocados
The question is: what is "human nature"?

95%
In this business, it's more like 95% of companies don't care at all about your education if you have experience, especially experience in the particular technologies they are currently using. Just search a job site for "equivalent experience." You won't get many hits outside software development. When most candidates can't write the simplest code in an interview, your portfolio of open source projects will count for much more than any degree unless it is from MIT, Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, or Cambridge. Most software projects simply don't need CS education beyond OOP and when to use a list, hash, or tree. I don't list any education on my resume (because I didn't even graduate high school) and nobody EVER asks (and I get plenty of interviews, offers, and contract jobs in the SF Bay Area.)
If you already have years of programming experience and are working full time then you time would be much better spent fleshing out your Github than getting a CS degree. By all means, educate yourself because you must to stay relevant in this business but don't think a CS degree makes you more marketable.

Re:Buck the trend, and stop trying to be Google/Ap
Visual Studio is far and away better than Eclipse and Xcode.
No it's not, it does project management better than Eclipse, is worse for editing code (for a lot of reasons, but refactoring is so much nicer in Eclipse), and VS11 is an ugly dog.
Let apps be free.
Well said. You might add, let the devices be free, too.

Re:Windows Phone 8
VS was a good product. It has some disadvantages compared to Eclipse (lack of refactoring, flexibility), and some advantages (and if you ask me, it is vastly inferior to VI and Make, but that is just preference).
But with VS 2012 they decided to go with the retro look. As in the whole thing looks like it was made in Motif. Hooray for bringing us back to 1980s technology. Except actually I think Motif on SGI looked better than Visual Studio 2012. Wow. -

Re:Rock Band?
Something like this has actually been done.
And as somebody who not-infrequently gets paid to play accordion (or at least, paid to stop playing), I'd definitely buy something like that.

We're ALWAYS doing it wrong
Reminds me of an old poster from my CS department. It features legendary crotchety old fart John McCarthy angrily looking at the camera, with the caption "Programming: You're Doing It Completely Wrong."

Agile
In my opinion, Agile is a great tool for managers, not developers.
Every manager in the end wants to ask for status reports every day.
But they can't do so, because people working for them will be upset.
Agile is an excellent way for Managers to ask for status reports
everyday. In my opinion, TDD (test driven developement) is the only good thing
about Agile. Here is Scott Adams about Agile.

Which RSS feeds? Where do you start?
First I will add a plug for https://www.bloglines.com/ â" RSS feeds where ever I can log in, via HTTPS. Great for those feeds I read whenever & everywhere; and for those I only check when waiting to board the airplane. In my bloglines collection I have around 400 feeds, which will grow after looking through these threads.
:) Some selections that hopefully no one else has mentioned:Amusement:
