Re:Yopy is a sacrifice to the Beast of Redmond
From what I have heard the yopy is still alive (with a totaly new design) and will just not be marketed by samsung but by Gmate themselves anyways you can check their page
.. but its been a while since they have really posted anything themselves anyways the now only have an MMC slot but have a keyboard in a clamshell like design -
Yopy is still out there...
The Yopy was Dropped by Samsung, but was re-designed by g.mate the comapny that was in cortrol of the unit all along. It's got just about the same specs as most of the pda's coming out now, but with and odd keyboard layout. check out or Personally I'll be getting the Zaurus shortly, and from what I've seen this is the Linux PDA to get.

Mobile Linux
Well, Mobile Linux will only be useful if it is done right... so that it is actually stable, usable, and as "idiot-proof"/easy to use as WinCE and PalmOS... Palmtops are a user-driven market, and most of the users are not engineers... While Linux gives access to cheaper, more familiar development environments (Gnu compilers, etc.) for OpenSource engineers, there needs to be more than just that...
Some more Linux Handheld links, including the actual specs of Pengachu, which reveal that 900mhz is the RF band (in case you thought it was the clockspeed), etc...
The Project Pengachu home page (specs, etc.)
MobiliX has various Mobile linux links / resources.

Favorite part of the Yopy site
One of the bullets on the features page is "Strong CPU of High Performance". I think I had that card in MTG but it was banned shortly after it was released...

Hopefully this should be slightly faster than the original site. I've only mirrored the relevant content and fixed the links; if the text is garbled, hit STOP once the images load.

Re:So how does it measure up?Its korea (samsung.co.kr) also yopy.org and gmate have more information than samsung's site. It seems that gmate is the company that is making these, and samsung is rebadging them, or is gmate a part of samsung. It says that they will have a world release in March, which has well, already passed, word is that it's coming out around june.

OT (sort of) YOPY Dev Kit Out April 30th
I got an email from Gmate saying the software development kit for the Yopy will be out on April 30th. In case you don't know, the Yopy is a Linux based PDA that will be marketed by Samsung. It runs on the 206mhz StrongARM and has a 4" TFT color screen, stereo audio, 32 meg ROM, 32 meg flash RAM (both upgradeable), compact flash slot, RS-232 and USB, 4-way game type buttons, a LiOh battery and runs Linux with W Windows. Gamate is developing lots of fun gadgets to plug into the CF slot (digital camera, PCS phone, Bluetooth and other wireless stuff). The Yopy itself is due out around the first of June. Cpt_Kirks

They are opening the battle with Symbian
According to this page there will be a family of Yopies (sp?) with the functionality of the upcoming Symbian/Psion/Motorola/Ericsson/whatever devices:
GMATE also plans to introduce a series of PDA products, including a PDA with built-in Cellular function, a niche market oriented PDA. These PDAs share the common technology basis of YOPY. In addition to the YOPY PDAs, GMATE is developing key technologies for next generation PDA to secure its leading position in the 21st century.
I definitely want one...

A bit more info
The web page does mention ARMlinux, which implies that it's using a StrongARM processor (the same as the Netwinder)
As for watching soaps, I'm guessing that you first have to download them onto a CompactFlash slot (they'd better be short soaps)
If you look around www.gmate.co.kr (near the bottom of Samsung's page they're mentioned under the heading "System and Asic Solution") you'll find a bit of information about a PDA called CHOPIN, which is due out in March 2000. It confirms the StrongARM and Linux are being used, but the only new piece of info amoungst the pages "Under Construction" signs is that it has 32MB RAM -
Open sync'ing. Price 10% less than competition
If it runs Linux, "what it syncs with" out of the box is almost immaterial, since we'll be able to make it do whatever we want without too much effort.
As for price, allegedly it'll be 10% less than the competition, whatever that means. :-)
Check out the GMATE site for more details of the PDA. -
This look real! Check out Gmate's Linux PDA (kr)
"Samsung's" Multimedia PDA is actually GMATE's product.
It's not clear from the info on Gmate's site whether the CHOPIN PDA and the Multimedia PDA are one and the same or whether Multimedia PDA is a more recent model, but it looks real enough. A lot of the questions raised by folk on this thread are answered on their site if you look around.
I love my Palm, but it'll be quite impossible *not* to buy the Gmate/Samsung PDA if it performs as described and does eventually reach these shores.
