Not really. Sony has already announced their online strategy. Nintendo still refuses to answer questions about it. It's not like all they have to do is make the modem. They've done that. They have to give people someplace to connect to. As we've seen with a lot of the online PC games over the past two years, this isn't as easy as it sounds. If Nintendo hasn't even mentioned it yet, it's a long way off. We probably won't see the official FF line on the GC until at least 12. I guess it's possible they could surprise everyone at E3, but I'm guessing not. But what do I know?

Another reason XI probably won't come to the GC is the lack of hard drive. From what I hear, the PS2 version will require the hard drive add on for one reason or another. Probably because Sony sees it as a good way to get people to buy the thing.

  14. Re:Final Fantasy Unlimited on SquareSoft to Develop for Nintendo Again · · Score: 2

Having a broadband adapter is a lot easier than having a broadband service available. Nintendo hasn't even announced this yet, so it won't be out for a while. It's much more likely that the GC will get some kind of FF spinoff (such as the aforementioned anime). That's still cool though, because it looks like some talented people will be working on this. Also, since it's not a part of the main FF line, they''ll have a little freedom to make some changes on the format, so maybe it won't be so much like the last four games. In any case, I'm almost as excited about this as I am about Metroid.

For every music taste there are already communities in existence, and someone there will be bold enough to try new things and tell others. Sooner or later your average web surfer is going to find out about this and start passing it along to their friends. Before you know it anyone can visit twenty different web sites that cater to his/her tastes and find new bands that they wouldn't have before. Why are we still explaining the internet to people on Slashdot?

In that hypothetical situation (let me stress hypothetical, because the other people who replied to me seemed to miss that part), you'd probably see one of two things:

    1) Microsoft gives up and decides to go cross platform, at which point they continue maintaining DirectX. This still causes problems for free/open software types, because they'd still have to play catch up, but at least it gives people a choice of OS.

    2) Devs realize that there are plenty of people who aren't on Windows so they start using an already established cross platform kid (like SDL), or they just do what Id does and roll their own.

Again, it's not that I actually think this is going to happen tomorrow, or at all. All I'm really saying is that a DirectX wrapper is a good thing.

If I could get DirectX games to play on a linux machine I guarantee there are at least 15 people I could have running Debian by the end of the week. It's a good thing.

Let's just be crazy and say this happens and everyone starts throwing their Windows CDs in the trash. One of two things might happen:

    1. Developers say "Let's just keep writing for DirectX, the wrappers work." So what? A Microsoft technology sticks around, but if so many people are leaving Windows, MS won't really have the power to enforce changes to DirectX 9 that would make it incompatible, because the devs will ignore them.

    2. Developers decide that since everyone has a linux box anyway, why not write in OpenGL since it would probably be more efficient?

Either way, who cares? A working DirectX wrapper would win users over, and that's a good thing.

That's all, I'm not making a big deal out of it. Yes, the Dreamcast had analog triggers, but Nintendo went for the trigger idea first. My point is that most, if not all, of the improvements in controller design over the years have come from Nintendo.

  22. Re:N64's Z button same as Super NES's L button on More on Future X-Box Capabilities · · Score: 1

Nope, Super NES was the first. In the right-side playing position (left hand on center arm, right hand on right arm, which most games used), the N64's Z trigger corresponds to the Super NES's L trigger.

Not sure what your point is here. The Super NES didn't have a "right-side playing position", the N64 did, like I said. I wasn't claiming that the N64 was the first to have shoulder buttons, I was saying that it was the first to have a button that worked like a trigger (like the Dreamcast, GameCube, and XBox).

    Gamecube has an amazing controller

I agree, but a fellow has to admit that it's a copy of PlayStation's with the L1 button removed, the L2 and R2 buttons made analog (like Dreamcast), and the left pad and stick interchanged.

I usually try not to get caught up in these conversations, but this really annoys me. The PlayStation controller is a complete rip off of the SNES controller, invented by Nintendo, with handles and two shoulder buttons on each side instead of one. The d-pad, the four button setup, analog sticks, trigger buttons, all of this was done by Nintendo first. I wouldn't even be surprised if the original PSX contoller had been developed by Nintendo, since they were in on the design of that unit, but I'm not sure.

In any case, Nintendo has led the way in controller design from the very start. As far as I'm concerned, putting the analog stick in a good spot for the left thumb was a great move, since it's the default in most new games. Also, as far as the analog shoulder buttons go, yes, the DC had those first, but but the GameCube's are so much more comfortable (besides, the N64 was the first to use a trigger, but I'm not sure if it was analog).

What the hell are you talking about? Are you trying to be an asshole? They aren't giving away the razor, they don't even own the razors, Sony and Phillips do. TiVo the company is not making money just because you bought another piece of hardware, they're making money because you sign up for the service. If everyone could transfer their subscription when a new version came out, it would be difficult to maintain the business.

Look, I understand that it's a lifetime subscription and you feel that it should apply to every PVR you buy throughout your life. I even understand that you might not care if TiVo is able to maintain their business. However, TiVo provides a great service, and to me it's worth it to buy a new subscription every few years when a new version comes out. It's worth it to support a company that puts out an excellent product (even if their service is misnamed). Microsoft does not make an excellent browser and it isn't even worth it to me to download the new one for free. As far as I'm concerned, it's worth $125 a year (if you buy a new lifetime subscription every two years).

OK, so that was a bit rambly, but I'm tired.

No, just put that TiVo in your bedroom or basement and but a new subscription for the new unit. Some people complain about this, but it's the only way TiVo the company is making money. They don't make or sell the hardware, so they don't get anything (or much) if you buy a new PVR.
