I use Go Daddy for registration and MyDomain for hosting. MyDomain's hosting is free, so it costs me $8.95/year.

I use godaddy and couldn't be any happier.

I had a handful of domains registered with Verisign/Network Solutions. The first renewal notices I got in the mail came from about every registrar EXCEPT Verisign. Most were pretty sleazy, trying to imply that they were authorized by Verisign to handle the renewal. The real notice from Verisign/Network Solutions came weeks later.

With the recomendations here, I transferred the domains to Go Daddy. I STILL get renewal notices from the other sleazeballs.

I think this is a case of Verisign deciding to play the same game and then getting called on it beacuase they're the big boys.

I switched from one of the big evil registar companys to Go Daddy and I've gotten far less of this sort of spam.

Pardon the whoring, but Go Daddy has posted a copy of the notice that Verisign sent out. It does seem fairly shady.

A while back, some companies were getting in trouble by sending businesses "invoices" for office supplies when they were in fact nothing more than a cheap attempt to get office managers to accidentally sign off on them. I'm pretty sure that you don't see this as much anymore because the offending companies got the smackdown from the government. These "renewal notices" seem to fall under the same guise.

There's no sign of the required disclaimer in Verisign's fake invoice. This is a matter for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which has law enforcement powers. They can also cancel Verisign's bulk mailing permit, or deny them permission to mail at all.

Looking at the letter it is very unclear...
No, looking at the letter, what I would say is unclear is the scan. I can't make out half the text on there. Unless that's a clean scan, in which case I think they're return rate is going to be pretty low :-)

Okay, Verisign is a lousy registrar and their service sucks. But their letter is reasonably clear, I think. Click on the link to that letter and you'll quickly see:
1. A nice clear Verisign logo. (duh)
2. The words "Transfer Authorization" just above where you sign.

Anyone who can't see those two things in black & white simply isn't up to the responsibility of being the administrative contact for a domain. I still dislike and distrust Verisign, but if the person in charge of my domains didn't clearly see that as a TRANSFER to VERISIGN, then they'd be out of a job.

If you look at the image of the letter you will see that they blocked out the address, but not the postnet barcode.

To my eyes the POSTNET barcode looks like this to me : (where t represents a tall bar and s a short one)

The way the POSTNET checksum value is given by (10-((Summation of all digits) Mod 10)). The total of our digits 02347112525 = 32... (10-(32 mod 10)) = 8. The checksum is valid and our decoding is probably successful.

Next step... head to the usps website to find that 02347 is in Lakeville, MA. Mind you, a ZIP+4+2 code in most cases is a unique address. However, the USPS is not going to make this easy for us.

Lets try our friend Google instead... searching for 02347-1125 give us the personal web site of Steve Douillette.

But how can we be sure that this is the letter Mr. Douillette recieved and diligently forwarded to godaddy to warn other customers? I wonder where Steve registered his domain name steve-d.com.

Mm, there are benefits to broadband other than those you list (and beyond fast speed, as other commenters have noted).

When you talk about "always-on access," you may be forgetting that it works both ways. With a broadband connection, DNS, and dirt-cheap domain name registration, any somewhat-geek can install Apache and serve homepages right from their home computer. I'm certainly doing it.

I've taken this a step further. I have a P200 "used to be mom's computer" running console debian, apache, samba, and IP-MASQ. Samba allows me to mount up the 4 other computers in my house (most of which are Windoze). Using a domain name, I can quickly and easily get access to all the files on all the computers on my network. No muss, no fuss, no IPs to remember. Talk about convenience!

You simply couldn't utilize a dial-up connection for these purposes. For me, broadband is quickly dissolving the lines between my computer and anyone else's. I pull up a browser, hook into my VNC, and I'm working off of my own computer. Or, I download files and use local apps while I'm at school, then shoot it back up to my computers at home when I'm done.

Not to mention all the crazy crap that my roommate downloads every day through Morpheus.

For all the things I'm now using Broadband for, could I go back to Dial-up? I'd rather take a sharp stick in the eye than go back to carting floppies around. But don't tell my cable company I'm violating pretty much every rule they have in their little TOS.

I found out about itax.com through godaddy, my domain name registrar. I haven't tried the service, but it says "100% free, no gimmicks" on their web site. I've been happy with their domain services so far so you might want to check it out.

Incidentally, you can buy domain-based E-mail redirection [dnscentral.com] for about $20 per year. So you can buy your own domain (maybe in .nom) just for forwarding purposes.

This is a good idea. But you can do it cheaper, with extremely reliable providers. You can get MX records or full forwarding for free from ZoneEdit. And you can get a domain for just $9 from GoDaddy. And you can forward it to account which you can access using IMAP with any mail client, or using the web, by using FastMail.FM.

This setup is that currently recommended by most of the community at http://www.emaildiscussions.com, which is the best place to find out about effective use of email.

at $6.95 a year through Godaddy getting anything BUT 10 years is a waste of money.

Go Daddy charges 8.95/year too... They also have a discount if you pay for 2 years or more in advance.

I don't work for them, but, I've found GoDaddy to be a VERY cheap and VERY good registrar. They are responsive, and the forms are easy to use (all web-based). Even domain TRANSFERS are a breeze... :)

Well you could always transfer to a different registrar. There are several around willing to renew your domain for a low low price. www.godaddy.com will do it for around $8.95
Just don't wait till the last minute to do this. No later than 3 or 4 months before your reg is up, initiate a transfer. I would also be sure you don't need to do any modifications on your account after the transfer has been initiated.
