Offline functionality is a thing that a PWA can be coded to do.

Yes, that does include both the data and the instructions. I've made one myself that had all the same functionality without having any sort of Internet connection.

Has been busted fabricating news ON VIDEO, no less than 2 DOZEN times in the past decade alone... This "Study" is likely just more leftist BS.

I'm just going through the paper right now, but there's a ton of sketchy and indefensible assumptions.

For example, the study relies on a list of sites known to have fake news, with a "representative article" for each site.

Taking one at random, apparently this news article was enough to get Breitbart listed as a "fake news" site.

The problem is that the article in question is completely and totally accurate, but was probably branded "fake news" because it went against the narrative of many Hillary supporters.

Another entry shows hannity.com, and the link (no longer working at Hannity) was about an undercover journalist who managed to impersonate Huma Abedin at the polling station; effectively, able to vote as someone else.

A quick search shows that this actually happened, it's a Project Veritas sting, and there's a youtube.com video of the incident.

It is immediately apparent that neither of these "representative" articles is fake in any way. I couldn't even find inaccuracies or bad framing in the articles - there's no sound reason to say that these are examples of fakery.

This paper does not at all rise to the level of quality and fact-checking that a published paper should have!

The regulations don't deal with the core destructive and problem-causing issues which are also massively profitable. All regulations which have any teeth are walked back by politicians. Now, Dodd-Frank was a joke for a lot of reasons, but the big reason was its intentional complexity and incompleteness and its unwillingness to deal with core issues. But even the pieces of Dodd-Frank that had small teeth were defanged.

Back in 2008, the big issue was lenders not having 'skin in the game' - they could make loans and shed all repayment risk when they sold off the loan to investors or the government. It's a license to print money and a perverse incentive to create bad debt. If you google "QRM safe harbor and risk retention", you'll get some history (QRM = qualified residential mortgage). There was an attempt to make lenders retain some small portion of repayment risk, instead of the government taking all of it, but that was walked back, as the above search will tell you.

The current Wall Street economic model is "privatize the profits and socialize the losses." Not a thing was done to address that. "Too big to fail" was never addressed - the biggest banks are even bigger today than in 2008 ("In the US, since the crisis, the six largest US banks now control nearly 70 per cent of all the assets in the US financial system, having increased around 40 per cent (against overall asset growth of only 8 per cent). JP Morgan, the largest US bank, has over $2.4 trillion in assets, larger than most countries." -- The Independent)

So. Instead the regulations are along these lines: Instead of just outlawing robbing people, they outlaw robbing people at 12 Noon. The rest of the day is fine. But then they add, 'well you can't rob people at 3 PM either'. And so on. They refuse to deal with the core issues (i.e. "you can't rob people"), instead nibbling ineffectually around the edges.

"Complexity breeds loopholes." That's the point of complex regulations - to breed loopholes. It's fantastic because it keeps competitors out of the business, because you need vast legal and accounting departments to stay abreast of the regulations. And it does little to stop the destructive behavior.

They've had systems, albeit imperfect, to install Debian or Ubuntu on Android phones pretty much since the 2.x days (maybe earlier.) I believe almost all require root. Here's one of the most popular, although I believe it's not being updated any more.

Ubuntu at one point had an official Android/Ubuntu hybrid project, which I think was used as the core of the Motorola Atrix, the one phone that you could dock and turn into a full desktop (or it might have been Ubuntu for Android was based on the Atrix system, I don't know which was first), it's definitely an area being worked on, and has the advantage, over both Crouton and DebianNoRoot, that Android apps are fully integrated, you can bring them up on your desktop, just like more recent ChromeOS versions allow you to.

Sure. AIG with its highly-compensated executives gets $148/year from each of 56,400 employees to the entire key executive suite in cash compensation. If you include other non-equity compensation (i.e. all the perks), it's $528/year per employee. Sinclair's CEO gets $119, while the entire executive suite there gets nearly $1,000 per employee in cash compensation--for 8,400 employees. Sinclair's executive suite doesn't get so much in the way of other expenditures as compensation.

Generally, the ones with fewer employees take more per employee. The service businesses are typically big: you have a lot of low-paid retail workers, and only a little executive comp per each. The ones that are good examples of high executive pay representing high dollar values generally have a workforce of middle-income employees who are a bit less impressed by an extra few hundred a year, and mostly complain that the guy at the next business over is doing the same thing for $15k more pay and better benefits--which is valid, but we're not having trouble finding food.

That's pretty much my point: the executive pay is usually not as egregious as it looks; and redistributing it is not a viable strategy for reducing poverty. A few people will be better off, maybe; that's not enough.

I believe in a strong system of capitalism and a free market, with regulations to ensure these systems operate in a socially-equitable and economically-optimal manner, and social programs to redistribute wealth to create equity. Such social programs have historically included unemployment insurance, retirement and disability pension, housing assistance, nutritional assistance (SNAP, WIC), and so forth.

All the talk about income distribution and equality, and nothing about equity. There's a difference, you know: equality means similarity, and so increasing equality means to reduce the difference between people; while equity means similarity in terms of means, and increasing equity means reducing the difference between people's opportunities. Public school provides equality; public school programs to provide alternative teaching for learning-impaired students so as to increase their success provide equity.
