Take a look at these pictures of polio survivors. See the "rare" complications of surviving that disease? And who does pay for the treatment that those complications demand? Can you afford a lifetime of care for your child should they get paralysis from polio or brain damage from measles? How much cheaper (and safer) is a vaccine compared to that?

Nothing, even just stepping out your front door, is ever completely safe. We live in a dangerous world. Demanding that vaccines be 100 percent effective and 100 percent safe is an impossibility. That is why vaccine makers are shielded from liability through the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, so that those that do have adverse reactions can be compensated and those that make the vaccines don't face financial ruin.

Finally, every time I hear someone say "Follow the money" in regards to vaccination I feel compelled to point out that if all that motivated a corporation was profit, they would profit more selling sixty years worth of treatment and care for all those polio victims rather than just provide two simple shots.

Actually, that's not true. MMR was introduced in 1971, and by now has a much longer safety record than the individuals vaccines it replaces:

You can do a google scholar literature view for a "systematic review" of controlled experiments, like you would with any other drug. You should confine your attention to high impact factor journals though.

Yeah, if I were going to get hydrogen from water I would take a solar panel and hook it up to a floating platform sitting in the ocean. Underneath there would be two gold or platinum plated electrodes, one of which I would leave free and the other of which I would put in a vertical tube. On top I would have a small pump (also run by the solar cell, or maybe powered by a small wind turbine since there is usually a wind over the ocean) that compressed the hydrogen into a collection tank. That would produce hydrogen at a very, very predictable rate, fully compressed and ready to use. A small hydrogen powered boat (powered indirectly by the same solar cells) could make the rounds every week or so to replace the tanks and bring the tanks ashore for use. The rafts themselves would attract fish and de facto cool the ocean underneath. And best of all, they would produce the hydrogen for only four or five times what the electricity that produced it was worth!

Now to patent this, get a government grant, and fight the NIMBY battle with all of the boaters and fisherpeople who don't want to see the oceans and sounds scattered with floating platforms covered with solar cells and hydrogen gas tanks. I'll be rich!

Well, that would seem like a perfectly normal line of reasoning — why sue them over it?

But I doubt, that's the full reason. In the suburbs of NYC they are perfectly willing to hook-up individual standalone houses — a proposition that seems costlier, than wiring even a small share (like 10%) of apartments in a building. They are willing compete with other providers too. Indeed, my monthly FiOS fee is the same today as it was 6 years ago, but the throughput is up from 35Mbps up/down to 75Mbps — because they are well aware of the "introductory offers" I am getting from Comcast.

So, why are they willing to "leave the money on the table" in NYC? I think, this story indicates, there is no money on the table there — that the city's regulatory climate is so suffocating, only the highest-paying customers get served. This explanation would be consistent with what we already know about the culpability of local governments for the dearth of Internet-service options, and with Google Fiber's unwillingness to touch NYC and other large (hence corrupt) cities with a 10-feet pole...

Google hangouts does not support XMPP. Youre using the old google talk service in adium, which you can also still switch to in web gmail. Google talk could (and will) disappear one day - with or without notice. Also I have NEVER gotten the syncing work properly between the two when you try to use the old legacy google talk. Do you have no problems using adium and the webchat (legacy or not) at the same time? Id be curious

Unlike netbooks, which were awkward to use for anything including browsing the web. It was codeword for a really cheap, really crappy laptop with a tiny and poor screen, an anemic Atom processor, too little RAM and the slowest HDD you could find. No laptop user would choose it unless they very literally can't afford anything better, I had one because I normally use a desktop and just needed a cheap piece of shit I wouldn't spend much on and could afford to lose/damage. My use case is now fully replaced by a smartphone, I don't even need a tablet/phablet. Besides, aren't Chromebooks the current day netbooks? Or if you really want they have netbooks with Win10. Not that I'd touch that with a ten foot pole.

They can stop Uber from using the Google technology (mainly the LIDAR afaict) until it becomes common knowledge (and then they have to wait a little longer to make up for the head-start they got by stealing the secret). They can use civil seizure to ensure Uber doesn't secretly continue using the technology. They can make Uber pay damages (profits lost by Google + profits gained by Uber).

There is also the issue of patent 8,836,922, which Google claims is being violated. It is also related to LiDAR. Also 9,368,936 and 9,086,273.

Google is also claiming that Uber's business practices were unfair, fraudulent, and illegal. They don't really go into detail why, except to say that reasonable people would have been deceived by misrepresentations and omissions coming from Uber.

So those are the claims. Also worth noting that Google has asserted their right to a jury trial. Here's the original lawsuit, it's fairly readable.
