*Please* don't select a winner that breaks the slashdotter extension.

I haven't had a look at the code for the slashdotter, but I hope it's robust enough to deal with CSS changes like this contest suggests without breaking.

Unfortunately, robustness doesn't seem to be the general rule with Mozilla extensions, which seem to break with every upgrade or site change. Sometimes it seems as if half of the Greasemonkey scripts don't work any more because the pages they were designed to work with have changed.

The one the surprizes me the most is the Venkman JavaScript debugger. Usually developer tools are the first things that get ported to a new version of any platform because the developers are using it themselves, but for some reason, the Venkman debugger is frequently non functional on the latest version of Firefox.

Oh well. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope this contest doesn't break slashdotter or that the extension gets updated quickly afterwards.

P.S. I hope you can't tell that SpellBound is broken on my installation of FireFox.

See here: http://www.hacksrus.com/~ginda/chatzilla/ I've been using it in Firefox for quite some time, works handy. Even semi-works (with some tweaks for overlapping keystrokes) in a tab.

And it's supported on Firefox. So, what's the problem?

Mouse gestures, automatic numerical forward/back and image zoom, popup blocking, skinning, tabbed browsing and UA spoofing.

Ok, so I liked Opera when I used it for a while. But firefox kicks its butt. I prefered FF myself because there were no ads (although you can add them if you want them)

But all of these features are available as FF extensions... even adding google ads to your browser.

I don't want to sound like a zelot, but FF is cheaper, ad free and does all that plus some. Email client? IRC client? That's what Thunderbird/Chatzilla/Mozilla suite are for.

It's your money, but I know where I'll be putting mine. Straight back in my wallet.

What about ChatZilla? It's free, cross-platform, and not too bad.

I would recommend diving into the world of Mozilla. They offer a couple of awesome tools for Javascript and DOM debugging. Check out the following: Venkman Javascript Debugger DOM Inspector Mozilla Firebird Specifically with Firebird, after you have it installed, go check out some of the available extensions at texurizer.net/firebird/extensions and download some of the cool extensions like the 'Web Developers Toolbar'. These pieces of software have proved invaluable to my productivity! I have used them to debug javascript, XUL and everything in between. Good luck!

Mozilla and Firebird come whith a Javascript debugger, and it works.

The Mac OS X version of Mozilla is now Mach-O instead of CFS, meaning the code underneath is UNIX-ish instead of Mac-ish, and it builds with gcc. This makes it faster.

The splash screen is missing (bug 112559), and the font size in Chatzilla is too small (bug 181039). The latter can be worked around with an altered stylesheet (look for "larger" here).

Venkman may well become a good debugger one day, but the version that comes with Mozilla 1.0 is a little more than a toy, a nice menu entry to have under "Web Development". It is absolutely unusable under real world situations. And the traditional lack of real documentation only adds to it uselessness.

Actually, the version of Venkman that came with Mozilla 1.0 had a reasonably useful walkthrough. It even shows up as the #2 result of google search for venkman debugger. I know of a handful of people who found it quite useful in Real World Situations, I suspect there were a few more that I don't know. Did you have a specific complaint?

The version that comes with Mozilla 1.1b is light years ahead of the previous version in many respects, but users may still be confused, intimidated, or frustrated by it. Try reading the FAQ (the walkthrough hasn't been updated yet.) If you still don't get it, try asking on the netscape.public.mozilla.jsdebugger newsgroup on news.mozilla.org, or the #venkman channel on irc.mozilla.org.

Right now the newsgroup traffic is so slow that the chances your (reasonable, on-topic) post will get a response are near 100%. If you opt for IRC, be patient, sometimes neither of us are listening. Stick around and you'll get a response.

At this point in the project, what I really need is good feedback from the users...

• What is confusing about the UI?
• What don't you like?
• What features are missing?
• What bugs have you run into?

Without good, constructive feedback, it's going to be very hard to take the project to the next level.
