Re:Faster is fine - do we need thinner?
Well, despite the Macbook Air being extemely small. They have dedicated a fair amount of size to the battery. Check out this picture to see just how much space the battery takes up in the Macbook Air. I only wish my HP thickbook used the same percentage of the volume for the batteries. I'd be able to work an entire day without charging. I'd gladly go without the optical drive if they could replace the entire thing with a battery.
I thought all the laptop vendors had something similar to Lenovo's "Ultrabay" battery that lets you swap out the CD-ROM drive for a battery? I know I've seen a Dell that has the same thing. HP doesn't?

Re:4GB
It is on OSX.

Or, you could do what any real Apple geek would do
Apple has traditionally overcharged for more capacity (RAM and hard drive space). You ALWAYS buy the smallest model and upgrade it yourself.
1. Buy a 500GB Time Capsule from a third party ($100 and up)
2. Open it up and replace the hard drive with a bigger SATA drive
3. Be amazed as the Time Capsule formats and uses the bigger drive
4. Buy a cheap USB notebook cooling fan and put the Time Capsule on top of it, to make sure the new drive doesn't overheatActually, #4 is a good idea with a stock Time Capsule, too.

Re:So how do you install a new hard drive?
So, no, you don't need to buy Apple HDDs or whatever nonsense you are spewing.
Please tell that to angry iMac Fans:
Yeah, because "angry iMac Fans" have never been wrong before.
BTW, the claim "you have to buy only Apple HDDs" is already wrong, and that is not what people actually complain about, so I'm not even going to waste more time with you troll.

Re:Corporate sales?
(my white iMac simply has a temperature sensor that attaches to the outside of the drive, so you just transfer it to the new one), but I'm sure it won't be long before some third party solution comes along to cure it.
-
Re:Corporate sales?
Well, with the newest iMacs, there is in fact magic fairy dust sprinkled on the hard drives: They have a custom power connector and firmware that also handles temperature sensor reporting to the SMU. If you swap the drive for another(even one of the same model; but without the Apple blessing) the system goes into full thermal freakout mode.
The firmware isn't the issue (never has been. I really don't know why Apple does that; but it doesn't matter anyway); it's merely the fact that Apple is using some unused pins on the drive connector. Fortunately, there's already a simple solution (will be available in production quantities in June, according to the article).

Apple
I hate Apple as much as the next guy, but not mentioning them at all in the summary is a bit... crude. Also, here's a list of all the new stuff (taken from http://www.hardmac.com/news/2010/01/11/displayport-1-2-validated).
* Doubling bandwidth mostly to support 3D: 21.6 Gbits/s.
* Connect even more monitors from a single DisplayPort. Dedicated hubs should soon be available.
* As for the HDMI, transport USB data between a computer and a display, supporting Display USB functions such as a webcam and USB hub.
* Connect to display with 3840 x 2400 resolution at 60Hz, or a 3D display (120Hz) at 2560 x 1600.
* Audio Copy Protection and category codes
* High definition audio formats (such as Dolby MAT, DTS HD, all BD formats, etc.)
* Synchronization assist between audio and video, multiple audio channels, and multiple audio sink devices using Global Time Code (GTC) -
as much as I dislike Vista
and its onerous security notifications, adherence to DRM and general pointlessness, I don't think that "incompatibility with hardware" is really a valid statement. It runs on modern hardware from a wide variety of vendors. If you want to see an operating system with stringent hardware requirements, you need look no further than OSX. At least I can show people how to run the OS on my own hardware without the software's manufacturer coming after me and threatening legal action if I don't stop.

Too bad Apple doesn't...

Re:ahemThe G5 iMacs do have an excellent internal layout. Open yours up and check.
It's not actually mine, it's my mum's (although I did pay for it, so I suppose it is mine in a way...), and since she lives a long way away, it's hard to just pull it apart at a whim
:).However, this, this and this would suggest it's not as nice as earlier ones - particularly since you have to go in through the front, past the screen, to get at the guts of the newer models.
And I still think they could have used a (replaceable) PCIe-slotted video card without changing the iMac form factor much...

Re:They Can't Ignore WoW
The performance of the iMac is identical to (or better than) its equally-specced counterpart in the MBP line. There is evidence that the performance of the iMac is better due to underclocking on the video card.
At their peril, of course. He has a point... an iMac in its current form is not gamer friendly... even WOW friendly. A PowerMac *is* - and handles WoW quite well... but if they price it out of the reach of family's... they expose themselves for great risk!
Balderdash. A current-gen iMac plays WoW as well. I've even heard suggestions that it plays better on a current top-of-the-line iMac than it played on the PowerMac. And by the way don't... use elipses... in writing... they... make....... you sound like... a dipshit! Yeah, the iMac isn't an Alienware system, but it's not designed to be. You don't need one of those beasts to game properly, and the iMac does just fine. In any given MC run, there are five or so people who constantly have to reboot their computers or get kicked from the game because they have too much adware (connection issues aside). I would be surprised if there was one of these annoying raiders on the planet who was using a current-generation iMac.

Problem with Intel, maybe ?
Tom's Hardware reports that Intel Yonah processor prototypes have energy consumption problems. HardMac also points to this article, by the way... This can explain why Intel and Apple are delaying the availability of the MacBook Pro (ugly, ugly name, bad)

Re:IHBT
um, ready corys first post...he got that from my article on engadget
That article talks about the problem, i.e. downloading being broken. The one you submitted to Slashdot talks about the solution (hex editing), which was sourced from here, ja? Perhaps they should be getting the ad revenue?
But yes, I am glad you post as yourself; it's a point in your favour. -
IHBT
Then why not link to the original article instead of a paraphrase thereof on your ad-supported site? Pretty much everyone here has a blog or site of some type, yet only you and Roland Pipequalle are ill-mannered enough to direct people to yours instead of the original source. Not only is it deceptive, but it shows a sad lack of creativity. Go off and write some interesting journalism / software / whatever, then you can link to yourself for the right reasons.

Re:one of the reasons they prospered w/the PC?
Virtual PC 7 for Mac is supposed to natively support graphics hardware, and all the real work for the games is done via the graphics processor anyways. That shouldn't be a road block to emulating XBox games on the XBox Next.

Re:Good riddance!
Here you will find a photograph and In here the schematics of the cooling system used.
And yes, there is a pump in there. So 'dynamically' is not a mere buzzword in this case. And no, it's not a simple heat pipe.
Oh, and it's not Burnoulli tube, but Bernoulli tube.
Now, did you really need to be that rude with someone only because he had a different opinion (even if you forget the fact that he was actually right and you wrong)? -
Cooling Pictures Available
A picture of the cooling system has been posted. This should put to rest the debate that it is not merely a heat pipe.

Re:Countdown clock
Flash aside, this is one important update for Mac users and shows how much code optimization can get you in terms of performance
Absolutely! I'm not the biggest fan of XBench, but these numbers do paint a very impressive picture.
Regardless, don't forget the cool stuff Apple's adding - Expose is cool, I got a chance to play with a pre-release version of Panther and it's one of those things that you'll begin to wonder how the hell you ever lived without it. The other thing that I'm looking forward to is the on-the-fly, user-friend 128-bit AES encryption. Your computer goes walkies? Least the pricks don't get all your stuff.

Pleeeeeease
This is a report about SGI's open letter and SCO's response previously discussed on
/.
Will the similar news reports from all the other IT websites make it to the front page as well ? If Darl had to pay a dollar each time /. makes a SCO news, the whole thing would have ended this summer.
In any case, the SCO-IBM comedy is already over.
