Re:Obligatory reminder that an alternative exists
That's at least three sorts of nonsense:
https://www.fourmilab.ch/hotbi...
The OS has no magic either, or are you saying that it's random seeds all the way down?

Yes. There is for thing dedicated random number hardware and there is hardware that can produce partially random data, such as network cards and radios, but the latter are only really good when combined with eachother and with a random number tracker, which is something the OS can do.

Re:Cooling is the issue
Completing one's toilet was originally getting dressed and washed and a toilet (or lavatory) was the place to do that, etc, but then the word got hijacked, in a long and glorious tradition of being unable to call a spade a shovelling device...

Re:The point where vigilante justice makes sense
Great plan! Make sure to extract similar vengeance on:
Children with fireworks
Children who intentionally light fires
Grills
Campfires
Throwing out a lit cigarette
Yard/Trash burning
etc, etc, etc, you know, the things that typically cause these fires. This was just an accident, it happens. I think what we need to do is take a similar stance that we have on any activity that could lead to a fire, educate people on the dangers and how to handle it. Remember Smokey the Bear? Meet Slashdot's most wanted. I dare you to stare into the face of evil! -
Re:Still not practical
In Brussels I saw some parking spaces with charging while at FOSDEM, here:
Now this may be currently limited to one car rental scheme, but that's more-or-less a matter of software to fix, especially once a standard plug is widespread.

Re:Sun doesn't get much processor press
I bought a (24-thread) T1 because it was *cheap* for the specs, and because I can use all that parallelism for my Web server ( http://mirror-uk-rb1.gallery.hd.org/ ) and stuff it is doing on the backend, and it is *lovely*.
I also use various flavours of Intel chips including Core Duos in the MacBook that I'm typing on now and in my new low-power Linux laptop that's replaced 5 old Solaris servers ( http://www.earth.org.uk/low-power-laptop.html ), but I have to say again that the T1/Niagara is lovely to write threaded code for (eg in Java).

Already some 'entropy pool' public servers...
There are various 'entropy pool' based servers out there such as mine at http://random.hd.org/ and also see for example http://www.random.org/
The existing public servers gather noise from various sources such as audio or radio or radioactive decay.

Java Web StartI've always thought that the Java sandbox is well-enough understood and fast enough to be a natural for this sort of thing, since it's properties are fairly well tested and understood. And 'HotSpot' JVMs can give very good performance too.
For example, I just put up this Java Web Start http://master.gallery.hd.org/_AI/remote.jsp project to enable people to help along my little AI project. It is entirely in the sandbox, and is careful with bandwidth and memory and CPU usage. But you don't have to trust me, you only have to trust Sun.
