Re:Hey, lovely little slashdot racists
I mean, that is the South, home to the KKK
Historically a bit inaccurate. Oklahoma is not in "the South"
...and now it turns out that everyone identified in that video (so far at least) actually hails from Texas. Dallas, to be specific.

Re: Is google now about to become a target?
Perhaps Muslim countries should stop killing Infidels, LGBTQs, stop degrading women, stop censoring the press and stop being mediaeval theocracies.
Perhaps Christian countries should stop killing abortion doctors, blacks, homosexuals, stop degrading women, stop censoring the press, and stop torturing people for driving taxis.
Basically stop harbouring Christian terrorists.
You know, like the US needs to stop doing. Your hands aren't so clean.
So what??? No mocking can ever justify violence. Never ever.
Or suicide, but that's a classic case of victim blaming right there.

Re:Doomed? They Were Never Viable.
E-wallets have been popular in Japan for years. They are extremely convenient, especially if you use public transport a lot (and Japan has good public transport). No more messing about with change at the convenience store either. Vending machines take them too.
If I could get here what you can get from a vending machine in Japan, I might want one too!
Public transit would be a very useful application for an e-wallet, especially in Tokyo with all those incompatible rail lines where you have to pay to transfer trains. But that could be solved by a dedicated transit pass which auto-recharges from a credit card account, sort of like the EZPass does in the U.S. -
Re:Oh for fux sakeThanks for your reply. I read the whole of that. I never knew of the story, and it made me think a little less of him. But only a little. And the reason why is because throughout the whole of that saga, it seems Elon was so tied to his work he couldn't make much time for his wife. That's very sad, but the good that he's doing for the world is so immense that I would say it takes priority. Personally, when I worked really hard on a certain programming project, I practically ignored everything else including my family. I regret that deeply, but I was getting little sleep, and it was very frustrating what I was working on (as well as being quite addictive). If I could go back in time, I'd force myself to take more breaks.
Elon gave his old wife an ultimatum, which seemed a bit cold. But I would say that's better than leaving her point blank. She does indeed seem bitter, but not incredibly so. I quote:Although I am estranged from Elon — when it comes to the children, I deal with his assistant — I don't regret my marriage. I've worked through some anger, both at Elon for rendering me so disposable, and at myself for buying into a fairy tale when I should have known better. But I will always respect the brilliant and visionary person that he is.
You said:
As far as his main motive, I'm curious as to how you think you know what motivates him.
I've seen countless interviews of him. Lots and lots, so you kinda get to know the way he ticks. For example, when Tesla and SpaceX were dying and very almost went bankrupt, he invested his own personal money to keep them alive (they only just pulled through). He does go on about 'saving the planet' and 'global warming', but he's not 100% sure that we ARE wrecking it, but he thinks it's a good idea not to find out, given that obviously even if there's a 5% chance we are wrecking the planet, it's best not to risk even that small chance.
He's an engineer as well as a CEO of course. You can hear that technical passion when he talks about SpaceX and Tesla, and making an electric car that has all the advantages of a gas car and then some. His Hyperloop idea was brought about because he thought the plan for a $68 billion bullet train in California was horrendously expensive and less advanced than the Hyperloop (which would come closer to more like $6 billion). He doesn't currently have the time to pursue it because of Tesla and SpaceX, but he's put the whole idea into the public domain in the hopes that someone else will do it.
And as I said his pricing for the Tesla Model S in China definitely goes against the idea that he's in it for the money too. Supercharger stations (which can get about 100 miles of range in only 15 mins of battery charge) are and will be free of charge to fill up (he uses solar power to help power the superchargers). -

Van Art
Adding new tech to a van is OK, if you're into that kind of thing. (Which I am.) But of far more importance is what kind of art you put on your van. Be it a wizard summoning a space unicorn to be ridden by a hot babe, a barbarian protecting hot babes, or an interstellar wizard summoning hot babes for nefarious purposes, van art is what takes your van and gives it that certain je ne sais pas which says, "I am awesome."
In this case, I think you need to consider the technological contents of your van and create a motif based around that. For example, you can have a wizard summoning hot technological Linux cyborg babes. That would be cool. And when you drove down the street, people would be like, "that's cool." And isn't that the real purpose of owning a van?

Re:Certainly won't displace it in...
Or flash games? Really? There's no keyboard or mouse to play them, assuming that flash performance is going to be worthwhile anyway. How many flash games are there that are completely playable via clicking?
You, good sir, are talking out of your ass. Obviously you haven't been playing Flash games. Mouse-only Flash games used to be the predominant form of Flash games and they still consist a significant portion of them. Just do a simple Google search on the top Flash games of the past decade and look at the lists. Example. Be sure to also check out Ferry Halim's Orisinal. These would have no problems running on a 1024x768 tablet.
This isn't a huge loss, and more than made up for in app store games.
There are more and better fun flash games on the browser than there are App store games. The wealth of flash games is just incredible. The App Store does not more than make up for this and not all App Store games are free.

A comedy piece about the LCROSS mission
Hey, this is not a troll: I wrote this article on Heavy.com to try to express some frustration I had with how the LCROSS mission was being spun by the White House. I wanted to share it with anyone looking for a laugh today who has been following this mission as closely as I have. "Mars, Bitches!"

Pros and Cons of "Blowing Up" The Moon
The fact is that the pros and cons skew wildly in both directions, but scientific progress must come at a price. And finding water is certainly a major scientific imperative. But still, the skeptic in me always worries about operations like the one happening today on the Moon. It's hard for me to embrace the science and let go of my inner worrywart.
As this article puts it: "The plan has generated a lot of outrage among people who shop at Whole Foods and grind their own coffee beans. However, there are a host of reasons we should irreversibly alter the shape of the moon with explosives, and finding water is just the easiest one to fact-check." -

Take http://www.heavy.com/ very heavy on Flash.

Ah yes, I have thought of this.
However, I like Heavy.
I guess I just have to tune the mark II eyeball.... -
Heavy.com
The sight I've found that uses many mediums for their content is Heavy
It uses sight(Flash), sound(music), and video to show it's audience it's content. There is no url(besides www.heavy.com) since it's all flash. But the section is called HIPNODX, and it catches the real life of "break dancers"(for lack of a better word in my head). It's very cool.

Some suggestionsGame: Half-Life.
Lessons taught:
- You don't have to have a non-linear storyline in a game to be both interactive and engrossing.
- You don't need a full-motion video intro to a game to be impressive.
- Really effective AI code isn't about how clever it is - it's about how clever it looks. The soldiers in Half-Life are individually stupid, but the fact that they work as a team is already way better than most games.
- There are points in Half-Life where the designers came up with a completely fantastic idea. They used it once to full effect, and then never again. Rather than making you utterly bored of it, that one point really sticks in your memory. There's also amazing subtlety in the soundtrack.
- Oh, and the point about mods and Counterstrike and stuff.
Other games: Deus Ex Machina, Starship Titanic (disclaimer: I worked for the company that made it), Shenmue.
Sites: Metababy, Unweb, Heavy, Placing, DIRK, Requiem For A Dream
VR Experiences: Char Davies's Osmose. Probably the most affecting thing you can don a head-mounted display for. If you ever get the chance to try it...

karma whoreI've been especially wowed by some of the flash work at heavy.com even if I actually like some of the material they parody. Its well put together and a bandwidth hog.
another would be snarg.net for its uniqueness and total lack of conformity to any consistency.. Its amazing it actually pulls it off.. congrats to the author (i can't remember his name)..

Some good flash animations
http://www.heavy.com/ . Which turns out is also pretty damned funny. Especially the Contagious movies.
