or
Download Site #2 -> http://securemecca.com/public/APKHostsFileInstaller/2012_06_01/APKHostsFileEngineInstaller32_64bit.exe.zip

INSTALLATION:
a.) Extract its sfx installer file from the zipfile
b.) Run the installer from inside ANY folder you like, extracting the executables + datafiles to any folder you wish (usually one you create for it, doesn't matter where, but you MUST run it as administrator for FULL functionality (simple & the "read me" tab shows how easy THAT is to do))
c.) Then, & lastly - Run either the 32-bit OR 64-bit version (rightclick on the executable & set it to run as Administrator, OR, make a shortcut that can for FULL functionality (like write-protecting the hosts file, & more...))---
What's it do for you?
Custom hosts files gain me the following benefits (A short summary of where custom hosts files can be extremely useful):
---
1.) Blocking out malware/malscripted sites
2.) Blocking out Known sites-servers/hosts-domains that are known to serve up malware
3.) Blocking out Bogus DNS servers malware makers use
4.) Blocking out Botnet C&C servers
5.) Blocking out Bogus adbanners that are full of malicious script content
6.) Getting you back speed/bandwidth you paid for by blocking out adbanners + hardcoding in your favorite sites (faster than remote DNS server resolution)
7.) Added reliability (vs. downed or misdirect/poisoned DNS servers).
8.) Added "anonymity" (to an extent, vs. DNS request logs)
9.) The ability to bypass DNSBL's (DNS block lists you may not agree with).
10.) More screen "real estate" (since no more adbanners appear onscreen eating up CPU, Memory, & other forms of I/O + electricity too - bonus!)
11.) Truly UNIVERSAL PROTECTION (since any OS, even on smartphones, usually has a BSD drived IP stack).
12.) Faster & MORE EFFICIENT operation vs. browser plugins (which "layer on" ontop of Ring 3/RPL 3/usermode browsers - whereas the hosts file operates @ the Ring 0/RPL 0/Kernelmode of operation (far faster) as a filter for the IP stack itself...)
13.) Blocking out TRACKERS
14.) Custom hosts files work on ANY & ALL webbound apps (browser plugins do not).
15.) Custom hosts files offer a better, faster, more efficient way, & safer way to surf the web & are COMPLETELY controlled by the end-user of them.---
* The malwarebytes/hpHosts site admin another person/site hosting it (Mr. Steven Burn, a competent coder in his own right), said it's "excellent" in fact and has seen its code too...

"nobody but you gives a toss about a noob delphi program that creates a blacklist hosts file..." - by crutchy (1949900) on Saturday August 25, @09:15PM (#41126205)
First of all - YOU certainly do, and you don't have one of your own to show by way of comparison either, lol (you're a lot of TALK, nothing more)...
Secondly, per my subject-line above? Well, the folks in the security community do, & decided to host it on malwarebytes'/HpHosts website:
http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download
As did another member of the security community who produces custom hosts file data (& other things like IE TPL's iirc):
http://hostsfile.org/hosts.html
(Opinions vary, & from folks out there attempting to HELP OTHERS by their efforts, in creating custom hosts file data!)
---
"even the form layout stinks of amateur" - by crutchy (1949900) on Saturday August 25, @09:15PM (#41126205)
Well, bitch all you LIKE, but you blew it on:
A.) The print statement & Python (which I knew of)
B.) gedit & text editors being unable to PROPERLY deduplicate/normalize, sort, & filter custom hosts file data, + FAR more
C.) Not having any wares of your own anyone can see or try/use (much less critique)...(And, more, on YOUR end... lol!)
So "the code with no lines has no bugs" & thus, 'CruTcHy' can say he writes "bug free code" @ least, lmao... even though it does ZERO too!
APK
P.S.=> I had a HUGE debate with a co-worker once, gave me the same guff you are now (shareware/freeware is easy): Well, I am going to tell him the SAME I am telling you, now - It has to run on EVERY SYSTEM UNDER THE SUN, whereas ones that are for information systems for a particular company, don't... the hardware is uniform, & so is the OS + software environs in that setting. It's NOT that way, when you "send it out into the wild" to run on EVERY SYSTEM OUT THERE, perfectly... apk
-
Is it my fault I made an excellent program
That does the job in less than 1 minute for custom hosts file creation? Less than 1 minute IF you have a FAST network connection (ala FIOS), & if you omit the "convert & filter" stage (optional, but GUARANTEES pristine data, 100%... omitting it, I can only guarantee 98++%, but it too usually comes out 100% on import as well).
One that's good enough to be featured on an exclusively 64-bit programs hosting site here:
??
One that's good enough for 2 security-oriented sites (malwarebytes' hpHosts -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download &/or securemecca -> http://hostsfile.org/hosts.html ) that create custom hosts file data for import to host!
That's done in BOTH 32-bit + 64-bit models???
* Face it - you WISH you were me... lol!
(It's not MY FAULT EITHER, that you're nothing but a "ne'er-do-well" ac troll...)
APK
P.S.=> Ah, "onwards & upwards" - it's NOT EASY, being "world-class"... apk

He created a program that helps security online http://start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5851:apk-hosts-file-engine-64bit-version&catid=26:64bit-security-software&Itemid=74
It's a program that security sites that produce custom hosts file data ( http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download & http://hostsfile.org/hosts.html ) host also.
Why would he create a security guide for Windows users then if he were a malware author, showing others how to secure their systems vs. attack http://www.bing.com/search?q=%22HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000%2FXP%22&go=&qs=ns&form=QBLH if he were a malware author also?
No, You've proven yourself wrong and yes, guilty of libel because of your ridiculously false statements intended to defame apk.

I.E.-> It's a program that has more than just potentials to do folks a LOT of good on several levels...
E.G.-> Especially in:
---
1.) Added/Regained speed/bandwidth
2.) Less electricity consumption vs. competing solutions like DNS + Browser addons like AdBlock (by blocking banners & more)
3.) Added "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth" vs. known sites-servers/hosts-domains that are known to serve up malwares (updated every 15 minutes here)
4.) Better reliability (vs. downed or dns poisoned redirected DNS servers)
5.) Protection vs. botnet C&C servers, bogus DNS servers malware makers use, & even better anonymity to an extent (vs. DNSBL's you feel are not right/just).---
& more...

P.S.=> Perhaps one day soon, when Delphi Xe3 hits (which is soon)? I'll "port it" to MacOS X (I can already do THAT via Delphi Xe2), & Linux (used to be able to with Kylix, Borland discontinued it, BUT I could with FreePascal + Lazarus - I'll wait for Delphi Xe3 though)...
Anyhow/anyways - in ANY event?
Well... Enjoy the program, she's a "runner", & thanks for your time (+ patience since the trolls here downmod my posts on hosts files - my guess is many are malware makers themselves is why)

c.) Then, & lastly - Run either the 32-bit OR 64-bit version (rightclick on the executable & set it to run as Administrator, OR, make a shortcut that can for FULL functionality (like write-protecting the hosts file, & more...))---
What's it do for you?
Custom hosts files gain me the following benefits (A short summary of where custom hosts files can be extremely useful):

10.) More screen "real estate" (since no more adbanners appear onscreen eating up CPU, Memory, & other forms of I/O & electricity too - bonus!)

Actually, using hosts lessens heat
"It used a hosts file filter list to block the known cold ranges and redirect them somewhere else. Then redirected the heat to 127.0.0.1 using the hosts file." - by Anonymous Coward on Tuesday August 07, @09:53AM (#40904811)
Wrong - see subject line above, & this: Since custom HOSTS files block off adbanner servers (who are a HUGE cpu killer in scripts, sometimes even infected ones!), and between hosts and noscript?
Well... you are NOT eating up as much parsing time on the CPU
(Especially string parse which is VERY CPU intensive, and script processing)
So - & thus, you eat less electricity, cpu cycles, AND generate less heat!
BONUS!
By using custom hosts files, You also:
---
1.) Go faster (since you can hardcode in your fav sites which accesses locally, far faster than calling out to remote DNS servers roundtrip, which MAY be redirected poisoned... AND, by blocking out banner ads - dual bonus!) - saving you money too, for bandwidth/speed you pay for: Triple bonus!
2.) Go safer (blocking out both maliciously scripted infested banner ads, AND, known sites/servers/hosts-domains that serve them up plus malware or other malicious content exploits), & more reliably online (less chance of DNS redirect poisoning here))
3.) More "anonymously" to an extent (vs. DNS request logs).
---
& more... see details, in depth, below!
AND?
For a custom hosts file generating program, both 32 & 64-bit? Well - I wrote one here:
(You simply extract its files to ANY folder you like (usually one you create for it, doesn't matter where, but you MUST run it as administrator (simple & the "read me" tab shows how easy THAT is to do))
* The malwarebytes/hpHosts site admin another person/site hosting it (Mr. Steven Burn, a competent coder in his own right), said it's "excellent" in fact and has seen its code too...

A Mr. Henry Hertz Hobbitt of securemecca.org &/or hostsfile.org can also verify that this program is safe - write him @ -> hhhobbit@securemecca.com
It'll be releasing soon to sites that host 64-bit programs (even though it also has a 32-bit model, line for line the same code except for 32 in place of 64 in its help file & user interface)!
What's it do for you?
It's a custom hosts file mgt. program that does the following for end users (Calling it "APK Hosts File Engine 5.0++") after it obtains custom hosts file data from 12 of the reputable & reliable sources listed below:
---
1.) Offers massively noticeable increased speed for websurfing via blocking adbanners
2.) Offers increased speed for users fav. sites by hardcoding them into the hosts file for faster IP address-to-host/domain name resolutions (which sites RARELY change their hosting providers, e.g.-> of 250 I do, only 6 have changed since 2006 - & when sites do because they found a less costly hosting provider? Then, they either email notify members, put up warnings on their pages, & do IP warnings & redirectors onto the former IP address range to protect vs. the unscrupulous criminal bidding on that range to buy it to steal from users of say, online banking or shopping sites).
3.) Better "Layered-Security"/"Defense-In-Depth" via blocking host-domain based attacks by KNOWN bad sites-servers that are known to do so (which IS, by far, the majority of what's used by both users (hence the existence of the faulty but for most part working DNS system), AND even by malware make

Explain the retraction of false positive then
IF they didn't mess up & on the grounds I stated? See subject-line above...
"They do not flag such files as "malware". They flag them as "heuristics found suspicious files that have properties often used in malware" - by Luckyo (1726890) on Monday June 04, @09:20AM (#40207883)
WRONG!
* The online scanners I noted don't DO what you said either... they only report "malware" & flagged it with malware names (virus names actually) no less... & they were WRONG too, of course, admittedly wrong on THEIR part no less... explain that!
(The last part in their admission of false positive is the BIGGEST burden on YOU now... the antivirus makers noted in my initial post, 5/70++ at JOTTI online + VirusTotal & even Microsoft Security Essentials said it was FINE!)

"If you actually read the text that your anti-virus software outputs on your screen, this becomes very obvious." - by Luckyo (1726890) on Monday June 04, @09:20AM (#40207883)
WRONG AGAIN, & IF YOU READ WHAT I ACTUALLY WROTE AND WHAT SCANNERS TYPES I USED (online Jotti & VirusTotal)?
You wouldn't have stated that... period!
---
"Unfortunately most people, apparently including yourself, do not read these messages and instead assume your file has been filed as malware when you're looking as a false positive hit from heuristics engine warning your about suspicious properties of your file.." - by Luckyo (1726890) on Monday June 04, @09:20AM (#40207883)

"Actual malware that is known is labelled very differently by most anti-virus software." - by Luckyo (1726890) on Monday June 04, @09:20AM (#40207883)
Again, B.S.: READ MORE CLOSELY NEXT TIME & check what online virus scanners I noted ACTUALLY DO!
Lastly - buddy look: I've been writing software that's done EXTREMELY well from the commercial software world more than once (to great acclaim in books, magazines, newspapers, technical trade shows & more), freeware/shareware, as well as custom database applications professionally since 1994...
So please: Don't even *TRY* tell me "how it works", or worse, act "condescending" to me, until YOU can show you've done the same (as well as "turning the antivirus makers over onto their heads" more than once, which I have a couple times now)...
In fact?
I'd actually wager I may have been doing things like that before you were even BORN.

Thoughts of others w/ urs
"I do not have mod point, so I can't mod you up again But anyway, I do appreciate what you are doing here" - by Taco Cowboy (5327) on Friday May 18, @02:08AM (#40038229)
In regards to the post u replied to & the question I asked there (where I wondered what it is they 'fear' about hosts files & WHY they downmoderate them, with NO COMPUTING TECHNICAL JUSTIFICATIONS WHY like pointing out technical errors in my post to justify a downmod)?
This next quote below is no doubt a possible answer (from someone in the security community I spoke to who also gets harassed/stalked/trolled in regards to hosts files):
---
"I don't actually get time for many sites such as slashdot anymore, but certainly see my fair share of trolls on the MyWot (Web of Trust (I'm a moderator there, and MyWot includes hpHosts in their "ratings")) and Malwarebytes forums, and you're correct - it's always either users of malicious software/sites, or the owners of such, that are doing it." Mr. Steven Burn - services@it-mate.co.uk -> hpHOSTS/malwarebytes http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download
---
* There's the answer MOST LIKELY... in a nutshell!
APK
P.S.=> In my estimation? The downmodders of my posts on custom hosts files are 1 of 3 types of people:
---
1.) A competing product maker who is afraid of hosts files (mostly antivirus OR antispyware people I'd wager, because if you cannot GET to sites that serve up exploits and THAT IS THE #1 CAUSE OF EXPLOITS to "get inside" ala trojans for remote exploitation (even you noted trying it)? You cannot be burned by them... what you cannot touch, cannot hurt you! Period...
2.) A webmaster being cut out of revenues by adbanner blocking (which robs users of money they pay out in speed/bandwidth for websurfing AND screen realestate too).
3.) A maker of DNS server programs (because hosts overcome issues in them, complimenting them in fact overcoming said weaknesses & they're easily controlled BY THE END USER TOO) & hosts help avoid tracking via DNS request logs also, by circumventing them completely for favorite sites users can 'hardcode' into a custom HOSTS file.
4.) A malware maker (per Mr. Burn of hpHosts/malwarebytes in the security community even SECONDING me on).
---
(Take your pick - tell us then, which of those are the downmodders of my posts on the added speed, security, reliability & even anonymity to an extent (vs. DNSBL's &/or DNS request logs) end users gain by using custom hosts files?)...

21++ ADVANTAGES OF HOSTS FILES
Over AdBlock & DNS Servers ALONE 4 Security, Speed, Reliability, and even Anonymity to an extent:
1.) HOSTS files are useable for all these purposes because they are present on all Operating Systems that have a BSD based IP stack (even ANDROID) and do adblocking for ANY webbrowser, email program, etc. (any webbound program).
2.) Adblock blocks ads (not anymore apparently, lol:
Adblock Plus To Offer 'Acceptable Ads' Option
http://news.slashdot.org/story/11/12/12/2213233/adblock-plus-to-offer-acceptable-ads-option )
in only browsers & their subprogram families (ala email), but not all, or, all independent email clients, like Outlook!)
Disclaimer: Opera now has an AdBlock addon (now that Opera has addons above widgets), but I am not certain the same people make it as they do for FF or Chrome etc..
3.) Adblock doesn't protect email programs external to FF, Hosts files do. THIS IS GOOD VS. SPAM MAIL or MAILS THAT BEAR MALICIOUS SCRIPT, or, THAT POINT TO MALICIOUS SCRIPT VIA URLS etc.
4.) Adblock won't get you to your favorite sites if a DNS server goes down or is DNS-poisoned, hosts will (this leads to points 5-7 next below).
5.) Adblock doesn't allow you to hardcode in your favorite websites into it so you don't make DNS server calls and so you can avoid tracking by DNS request logs, hosts do (DNS servers are also being abused by the Chinese lately and by the Kaminsky flaw -> http://www.networkworld.com/news/2008/082908-kaminsky-flaw-prompts-dns-server.html for years now). Hosts protect against those problems via hardcodes of your fav sites (you should verify against the TLD that does nothing but cache IPAddress-to-domainname/hostname resolutions (in-addr.arpa) via NSLOOKUP, PINGS, &/or WHOIS though, regularly, so you have the correct IP & it's current)).
* NOW - Some folks MAY think that putting an IP address alone into your browser's address bar will be enough, so why bother with HOSTS, right? WRONG - Putting IP address in your browser won't always work IS WHY. Some IP adresses host several domains & need the site name to give you the right page you're after is why. So for some sites only the HOSTS file option will work!
6.) Hosts files don't eat up CPU cycles like AdBlock does while it parses a webpages' content, nor as much as a DNS server does while it runs. HOSTS file are merely a FILTER for the kernel mode/PnP TCP/IP subsystem, which runs FAR FASTER & MORE EFFICIENTLY than any ring 3/rpl3/usermode app can.
7.) HOSTS files will allow you to get to sites you like, via hardcoding your favs into a HOSTS file, FAR faster than DNS servers can by FAR (by saving the roundtrip inquiry time to a DNS server & back to you).
8.) AdBlock doesn't let you block out known bad sites or servers that are known to be maliciously scripted, hosts can and many reputable lists for this exist:

1.) Get ahold of the "Android Debugging Bridge" (ADB) & install it
2.) Mount your system mountpoint as READ + WRITE (as powerful of priveleges as you need is this)
3.) Using the PULL command, copy the file over from your PC (or even on your ANDROID if its there already) using PULL & overwrite the etc. folder's copy of HOSTS

I defend against disk corruption with HOSTS filesDO THE FOLLOWING -- obtain a good reputable solid HOSTS file, like mvps' -> http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
* DONE!
(Yes, it's THAT simple vs. hosts-domain based threats which ARE THE MAJORITY OF THEM OUT THERE (because hosts-domain names are recyclable unlike IP addresses)... &, it works - you CAN'T be burned if you can't go into the malware kitchen!) No more malware, no disk corruption!
This concept & technique is VERY simple to understand, as far as how to install a custom HOSTS file, how to get data to populate it (& if need be? An Access import & "SELECT * DISTINCT FROM (tablename) ORDER BY ASC" type query & export can do the deduplication/normalization end even).
E.G.-> I've taught it to people who have NO CLUE in computing in fact, & they took to it like ducks to water - especially custom editing their custom HOSTS file with text editors once they understand what speeds them up (hardcodes) & secures them + how, by blocking out bogus sites/servers!
(And? Heck - They ought to like it & take to them fast! Especially considering a custom HOSTS file acts as a security layer AND more-or-less, an "online turbocharger" for speed too, for free! You already own one anyhow, with any OS that uses a BSD based IP stack (which IS most))...

Not cryin (happy actually): As I stated before?
Anyone's FREE to check w/ malwarebytes-hpHOSTS' site admin Mr. Steven Burn (a competent coder in his own right), who literally said it's "excellent" in fact!
Write him yourselves should anyone doubt any of this:
services@it-mate.co.uk
( OR, contact him via his site @ http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download )
He's even seen the majority of the sourcecode (Delphi Object Pascal 32 & 64 bit).
* I've even come up with a way to make it FASTER still, but... that'll wait until I do version 6.0++...
APK
P.S.=> Heh, know what makes me laugh? I feel like Steve Rogers in the GREAT film "Captain America" near its termination, when you hear (outta Ms. Righetti, who looks particularly stunning imo):
"All agents Code 13..."
Replace "agents" with trolls around here though for the "analogous comparison"...
Man, lol, especially since you dorks always appear "outta the woodwork" to troll me by ac replies, in vain...
Additionally, since I have been "out-of-the-loop" doing freeware/shareware since late 2003-early 2004 (by choice, work obligations, travel, & just life-in-general)?
"You've been asleep Cap... for almost 70 years..."
So have I, internet-time vs. "real" time that is (2004-2012), as far as doing wares for folks to use... no more.
I told myself that IF things didn't get "better" on the virus/trojan/spyware/rootkit (malware-in-general) front by 2012?? Out this app would go to the general public!
So, here we are... only a little more to go, & out she goes (64-bit too, there is, afaik, none done that way yet other than mine)...
Yes, HOSTS files are an EFFECTIVE "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth" tool vs. malware, a speed gainer that's HUGELY noticeable in two ways (blocking adbanners + hardcodes of users fav sites into it), good vs. DNS faults (DNSBL & downed or redirected DNS servers) & even for more "anonymity" vs. tracking & more (very versatile/ubiquitous)... and lastly?
They run in "Ring 0/RPL 0/KernelMode" (pnp design on Windows &/or MacOS X, not sure about Linux but, most likely the same too odds are & if not, it ought to be) which because they are only a filter for the IP stack itself in that layer of operations vs. usermode/Ring 3/RPL 0?
Hey, my last "Capt. America" analogy?
Capt.America/Steve Rogers: "What's it made out of?"
Howard Stark: "Vibranium - it's as STRONG AS STEEL & a 1/3rd the weight"
It just works - more efficiently than other methods & even complimenting them (such as for software firewalls vs. IP addressed attacks, the one FAR less used, because unlike host-domain names? Once they're 'blackballed', they're gone... not always the case with bogus host-domain names, they recycle/reuse them w/ diff. & often less reputable or cautious hosting providers)!
(And, for all of the above, complimenting things like browser addon like AdBlock + DNS servers (even filtering good ones vs. malware))...

I just proved 3 antivirus companies WRONG
Major ones in Symantec/Norton, ClamAV, Arcabit/Arcavir, & McAfee. So far?
1.) Arcabit/ArcaVir
2.) Symantec/Norton
3.) ClamAV
Have "retracted/recanted" their false positives on a program I wrote that another security community organization's hosting (malwarebytes/hpHosts) for me (very cool of them).
---
It's a hosts file mgt. program that does the following for end users (Calling it "APK Hosts File Engine 5.0++")
1.) Offers massively noticeable increased speed (via blocking adbanners + hardcoding users fav. sites into the hosts file for faster IP address-to-host/domain name resolutions)
2.) "Layered-Security"/"Defense-In-Depth" via blocking host-domain based attacks by KNOWN bad sites-servers that are known to do so
3.) Better 'anonymity' to an extent vs. DNSBL's or DNS request logs, as well as reliability vs. the DNS system being "dns poisoned/redirected" OR "downed" period...)
4.) Faster resolution of IP addresses for host-domain names (via hardcoding users fav. sites into hosts already ip address resolved, locally = MANY TIMES FASTER than calling out to potentially redirected/poisoned or downed DNS servers).
5.) Write protecting the hosts file every 1/2 second (supplementing UAC) - even if/when you move it from the default location via this registry entry (which if done, can function ALMOST like *NIX shadow passwords because of this program):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters
And changing the "DataBasePath" parameter there (I do this moving it to a faster media, a "true SSD" using DDR-2 RAM, in the 4gb Gigabyte IRAM I have).
5.) Sorting hosts entries (for easier end user mgt. manually)
6.) Manual editing of all files used (hosts to import list, hosts itself in its default location of %windir%\system32\drivers
etc, the hosts files to import/download & process, & favorite sites to reverse dns ping to avoid DNS (noted above why)).7.) Removal scanners (if the users decide to remove hosts entries from imported data they can check if the site is indeed known as bad or not (sometimes 'false positives' happen, or just bad entries, or sites clean themselves up after infestation due to vulnerable coding etc./et al).
Their site admin (Mr. Steven Burn, a competent coder in his own right), said it's "excellent" in fact!
(Write him yourselves should anyone doubt any of this -> services@it-mate.co.uk or see his site @ http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download ) & he's seen the majority of the sourcecode (Delphi Object Pascal 32 & 64 bit).
8,) Removal of bloating material in many hosts files like:
a.) Comments (useless bulk in a hosts file that's "all business")
b.) Trailing comments after records (produces duplicates)
c.) Invalid TLD entries (program checks this in a BETTER method than the API call "PathIsURL")
d.) Trims entries (vs. trailing blanks bloat on record entries)
& FAR more...
---
* McAfee's next & in process now afaik since I wrote them @ Mr. Burn's guidance & suggest to do so...
So far/So good, in that my "naysayer experts" are falling like dominoes, 1-by-1, since they simply didn't understand the executable compression engine technique I use... & did a "falsie" on my program!
It happens!
I use exe packing/compressing, for several GOOD reasons:
1.) Compressed exe's load FASTER over a LAN/WAN by far, very noticeably so (& faster from local HDD's too, since the compression/decompression process is offset by the speed of today's CPU's, & since the file is SMALLER on disk & tinier files load up from disks, faster!)
2.) Compressed exe's are HARDER TO "resource hack"
3.) Compressed exe's are HARDER to 'disassemble' (not in memory though)
4.) I test my program @ startup, & IF IT IS NOT THE COMPRESSED SIZE? It will self-terminate (assuming it is infested/infected OR being hack

Thank you (sorry to see you modded down)
I have submitted a program that automates the entire process yielding more speed, security, & even "anonymity" to an extent using HOSTS files for less CPU, RAM, & other forms of I/O costs by merely using native TCP/IP features (fast & efficient as it gets @ ring0/ rpl 0/pnp kernelmode operations, without layering on other potentially faulty things like local DNS servers, wasting the above, AND electric power too).
You can inquire about it here with a respected member of the security community who runs malwarebytes hpHOSTS sites here, in Mr. Steven Burn -> services@it-mate.co.uk :
From -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download
(imo, and yes, I am pretty well informed on this? It is the single best overall hosts file out there for giving users more speed, & more security, bar-none!)

Tell HIM that... especially after his utter technical fail below:
http://mobile.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2734503&cid=39497061
And yes, it's he attempting to "defend his trolling myself" on hosts files, especially so many days later (nobody's stupid enough to NOT know it's he for Pete's sake)...
... apk

Actually I just submitted a program to
The security community that a competent coder who admins malwarebytes hpHOSTS says is "excellent" so... you're b.s. off-topic attempts @ ad hominem attacks? Useless...
Write him yourself:
services@it-mate.co.uk
He's a good man, technically knowledegeable on networking and coding, AND does a great job on the hpHosts site for malwarebytes here:
http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download
(imo, and yes, I am pretty well informed on this? It is the single best overall hosts file out there for giving users more speed, & more security, bar-none!)
U FAIL, TheRaven64... lol!
Especially useless after this utter "overwhelm & devastate" reply of mine showed how technically WEAK you are TheRaven64:
http://mobile.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2734503&cid=39497061
* Do you really HONESTLY think people reading don't realize that was you trying to defend youself after trolling me on hosts files which you started up with myself here this week on ->
?
(Guess again - we're NOT that stupid pal, but, judging on your "performance' OR rather, lack-thereof, lol? U FAIL, & on all accounts noted!)
---
As to your quotes on wares I have done (inclusive of commercially done code that was a finalist 2 yrs. in a row @ Microsoft Tech Ed 2000-2002 in its hardest category SQLServer Performance Enhancement & making it later 40% more efficient for a certified Microsoft Partner that's been going strong now for 17++ yrs.?) Well...
The day you can show you have done more than I have, earlier, & BETTER, + around the art & science of computing on that level, which I did odds are STRONGLY while you were still in diapers?
That's the day you can even BEGIN to attempt to effetely & illogically ad hominem attack myself... which you have clearly failed in.
APK
P.S.=> You started this here -> http://mobile.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2734503&cid=39406223 and I am merely letting you finish it too (especially after your UTTER FAIL above via an AC post in the 1st link above, like that "fools anyone" (not))... and you are finishing yourself with it, I love it... apk

YOU ARE CORRECT as it gets... apk
hpHOSTS (best one, extremely comprehensive, & CLEAN, not bloated with crap):
http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download
OR
mvps.org's:
http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm
I like them both, but... the latter BLOATS their stuff TOO MUCH with b.s. comments & uses a less than efficient format in blocking addresses, which I proved here the other day to a network security instructor on the grounds noted in each case (funny part is, he asked for clarification & response, I gave it, asking the same... no show! "gosh" I wonder why, lol, not!).
There's others too, but... nobody makes them "std." as to blocking addresses use, pad fields, comment bloat & FAR more...
Which is, again, why I built an app for folks like yourself to use to gain as you noted & I note below... took me a month to refactor, optimize & rewrite it (again, 5th time now, lol).
It helps, in MANY ways too for hosts... not just blocking out adbanners (stealing bandwidth/speed you pay for, & infecting folks even more than a 'few times' the past decade++ now in fact), or even speeding up hosts-domain to IP address resolution for your favs (which also proofs you vs. downed or DNS redirected poisoned DNS servers but also vs. DNS request logs & even DNSBLS)... but for layered security and to an extent? "anonymity" vs. trackings too.
I could go on, but since you know what you know? I don't have to. That was more for others' reading's benefit...
Anyhow/anyways:
That which you state?
That is WHY I built the app I did, & submitted it to malwarebytes/hpHOSTS above...
For free/"outta the goodness of my heart", lol, for others, and in 64-bit too, because as YOU note? It works...
See - I've tested it against all kinds of others, & it's better + more accurate, because its more "automagic" & doesn't require anything more than 4 button clicks to build your OWN hosts file from the "best of the best" out there! Does more too, write protects itself (vs infestation by bytesize check @ startup & every 1/2 second) & the HOSTS file too, properly scanned by registry database path verification of location & more...
(1st of its kind on that note, afaik, in GUI @ least, + 64-bit, though it also ships with a 32-bit model too... which IS what folks want & use mostly).
Heck- I could AND HAVE built it to be faster in character mode, but folks don't like that!
(I.E.-> I have a model that way built in Object Pascal now, that is LITERALLY 10x as fast as the one I submitted to the 1st source I noted).
Ahhh, I am babbling now, sorry... just excited to see that even the guys making "the best" hosts file like my work (Mr. Burn a competent coder too imo) said "it's excellent work"... good enough for me, hopefully, others too.
That's the idea: Where I went to college? They "pound a great idea into you": Do something good for everyone once you get this education, help make the world a better place.
APK
P.S.=> It was "quite the battle" vs. Mr. H. Hobbitt (another hosts file maker) who put it through the JOTTI online virus test where it passed 19/21 scanners (3 more here too not on said test run from LINUX machines), but COMODO & ArcaVir/arcabit said it was "bad"...
So... I had to prove them wrong, how/why & more, not easy, but done in 2 days time...
See - sometimes, good as those guys are, like Dr. Mark & my correcting HIS wares even which I noted here? Make mistakes & probably due to being "hustled" by mgt. on quotas etc./et al (we all know THAT feeilng working for others)... apk

It's biting off what I get ribbed on here for
HOW TO INSTALL A CUSTOM HOSTS FILE ON AN ANDROID SMARTPHONE:
DO THE FOLLOWING (after obtaining a good reputable solid HOSTS file, like mvps' -> http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm ) OR better yet, HpHosts -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download
---
1.) Get ahold of the "Android Debugging Bridge" (ADB) & install it
2.) Mount your system mountpoint as READ + WRITE (as powerful of priveleges as you need is this)
3.) Using the PULL command, copy the file over from your PC (or even on your ANDROID if its there already) using PULL & overwrite the etc. folder's copy of HOSTS
---
* DONE! Yes, it's THAT simple... &, it works!
No 3rd party apps required @ all/whatsoever + completely free also since folks already have one on ANDROID smartphones!
(Other types of smartphones too. I simply note android because last I knew of, it even surpassed iphones out there in terms of marketshare).
As to my subject-line?
Well, there's a pack of idiots around here that calls me "hosts file troll", but they NEVER ONCE MANAGE TO DISPROVE FACTS I PUT OUT REGARDING HOSTS FILES... (20 of them vs. AdBlock &/or DNS Servers alone in fact).
Not once, for years now, in fact.
Who are they?
No doubt malware makers themselves, or webmasters losing out on adbanner views!
(Too bad the latter don't admit they suck up CPU time, RAM, & other forms of I/O a user pays for, including electric power, as well as bandwidth & speed a user pays for out-of-pocket... & adbanners loaded with malicious script? Tons of that happened over time now... want proof? Just ask, I'll put out a TINY sampling of it (dozens)...
Who else agrees with me on it?
Mr. Stephen Burn of hpHosts, & here is a quote from he on it as we discussed this this week in fact, and how the idiot trolls around here tried to libel & mock myself calling me "hosts file troll", when hosts files are for helping folks get FAR better speed, security, and even anonymity to an extent (vs. DNSBL + DNS request logs):
---
"I don't actually get time for many sites such as slashdot anymore, but certainly see my fair share of trolls on the MyWot (Web of Trust (I'm a moderator there, and MyWot includes hpHosts in their "ratings")) and Malwarebytes forums, and you're correct -it's always either users of malicious software/sites, or the owners of such, that are doing it."
---
It doesn't take a brain to realize that anyone harassing, stalking, & libelling myself as they have here repeatedly to no avail (they've never disproved points I make about hosts files benefits for users of them I extolled above after all), is done by those who gain by people NOT using them.
(That came about after I submitted a 64-bit hosts file mgt. program to he is why, another story in & of itself where I proved COMODO & Arcabit have problems with exe compressors & produce false positives)
APK
P.S.=> You MIGHT have to run a Dos-2-Unix program over your custom HOSTS file, per the above directions for installation into an ANDROID smartphone, & especially IF you didn't import one built for *NIX, but that's about it (since ANDROID is a Linux & thus, yes, a *NIX variant essentially)... apk speed a user pays for out-of-pocket...
-
I defend ANDROID smartphones w/ HOSTS files
DO THE FOLLOWING (after obtaining a good reputable solid HOSTS file, like mvps' -> http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
---
1.) Get ahold of the "Android Debugging Bridge" (ADB) & install it
2.) Mount your system mountpoint as READ + WRITE (as powerful of priveleges as you need is this)
3.) Using the PULL command, copy the file over from your PC (or even on your ANDROID if its there already) using PULL & overwrite the etc. folder's copy of HOSTS
---
* DONE!
(Yes, it's THAT simple vs. hosts-domain based threats which ARE THE MAJORITY OF THEM OUT THERE (because hosts-domain names are recyclable unlike IP addresses)... &, it works - you CAN'T be burned if you can't go into the malware kitchen!)
APK
P.S.=> Of course, your HOSTS file will need to have the domain/hosts name of the C&C servers, & that you have to obtain for this to work vs. threats like bogus servers &/or maliciously scripted sites. Here's some good sources for that above & beyond mvps.org (I noted them above):

Hosts files = superior 2 AdBlock &/or DNS alon
20++ ADVANTAGES OF HOSTS FILES OVER DNS SERVERS &/or ADBLOCK ALONE for added "layered"/"defense-in-depth" security + SPEED:
1.) HOSTS files are useable for all these purposes because they are present on all Operating Systems that have a BSD based IP stack (even ANDROID) and do adblocking for ANY webbrowser, email program, etc. (any webbound program).
2.) Adblock blocks ads (not anymore apparently, lol:
Adblock Plus To Offer 'Acceptable Ads' Option

in only browsers & their subprogram families (ala email), but not all, or, all independent email clients, like Outlook!)

4.) Adblock won't get you to your favorite sites if a DNS server goes down or is DNS-poisoned, hosts will (this leads to points 5-7 next below).
5.) Adblock doesn't allow you to hardcode in your favorite websites into it so you don't make DNS server calls and so you can avoid tracking by DNS request logs, hosts do (DNS servers are also being abused by the Chinese lately and by the Kaminsky flaw -> http://www.networkworld.com/news/2008/082908-kaminsky-flaw-prompts-dns-server.html for years now). Hosts protect against those problems via hardcodes of your fav sites (you should verify against the TLD that does nothing but cache IPAddress-to-domainname/hostname resolutions via NSLOOKUP, PINGS, &/or WHOIS though, regularly, so you have the correct IP & it's current)).
