Re:Arbitrary Precision Floating Point? The Constructive reals package by Hans Boehm should work for you. It "sucks bits" from subexpressions as necessary to obtain the output precision that you ask for. Beware of questions that take forever -- with unlimited precision, certain (in)equality questions can never be answered.
I wrote some code that uses this package to test the quality of the Java Math.sin method, if you would like a starting example.

Re:another proof point that Sun is dyingSun still talks out of both sides of it's mouth. In one breath they make claims that the UltraSPARC cpu is the most competitive CPU known to mankind, and in the next breath they're releasing non SPARC based systems,
Yeah, no other big company would ever do such a thing. Like, offering customers different solutions for different problems.

Blade Servers!
If you really want to do this, the trend is blade servers. HP, IBM and others are very serious about this and the hardware works great IMHO.
Another very good example is the Cosine IPSX IP Services Switch, that shares "blades" with MIPS and PowerPC processors in the same chassis, all running under Linux, according to a sales rep. -
HP/Compaq Servers and SUN
HP/Compaq Servers and SUN have some similar things on their servers now. Although no web browser, and not technically BIOS. The Remote Insight Lights-out (RILo)boards provide great disaster recovery tools. Compaq An oldie but goodie is SUN Solaris PROM. Much more useful than BIOS.
I know people clammor for the good ole days of BIOS and CMOS, but now we just need to accept that these new products are going to be better. -
Sun is going down
_ALL_ Sun servers are very stable, but slow. SPARC speed is poor, take a look at SPEC CPU2000 Results. The memory bandwidthis _very_ low. In Linpack-top500 you won't see SUN in the 100 first places.
The Fujitsu SPARC64 V is better chip and 100% compatible with SUN solaris/SPARC. And better servers with 128 CPUs !!!!
LiNUX is a better alternative below 8 CPUs: Migrating Oracle9i - Based Sun Servers to Dell Servers Running Linux and Migrating Oracle9i - Based Sun Servers to Dell Servers Running Linux, Part 2. LiNUX+x86/ia64 , and soon AMD x86-64, is cheaper and faster than Solaris/SPARC
DEC/Compaq/HP have the best chip (Alpha EV7) and the best UNIX servers (ES47,ES80,GS1280) in RISC arch. It's a pity that Alpha is going to die to put intel ia64 instead.
And if you need NUMA machine, SGI Altix is for you.
Why do you need to buy a SUN server? -

Re:Give us a phone number to call this company
Sure enough, Mr. Gettys works for Hewlett Packard now, in the HP Labs division.
Yeah, and he's got a squishy head too... heheh. -
Re:Give us a phone number to call this company
Anonymous Coward trolls:
Give us a phone number to call this company:
Well Jim, I would love to confirm your employment when Kevin damaged your system. I imagine your full of it. Just my personal opinion.
Well first off, to confirm that the account belongs to Jim Gettys, this account has been posting to slashdot for years, including posting in articles about himself and his work, and you are the first person I've seen accuse him of being "full of it". If the jg account on slashdot were a fake, I'm certain there would be a number of his friends and coworkers pointing this out. There haven't been, so I will assume it's him.
Secondly, since you appear to have been asleep for the past ten years, you cannot call Digital Equipment Corporation, because they no longer exist. They were acquired by Compaq, which was acquired by Hewlett Packard. Sure enough, Mr. Gettys works for Hewlett Packard now, in the HP Labs division.
His employment at Digital is a matter of public record. He's even listed as a DEC employee in RFC 2068. If you really want to confirm his employment, I suggest you hunt down HP's Human Resources (or Media Relations, they might have a biography) department yourself.
While I am aware that Kevin Mitnick is a more recognized name for many people, Jim Gettys is far more deserving of fame. Both The X Window System and HTTP are the way they are today partially due to his hard work. Kevin Mitnick did something stupid, got caught doing it, and was abused by the government; Jim Gettys actually created things we use every day. -

Re:Wow!!! You mean like this?
linkpack itanium2 vs alpha ev68
This is the performance for ev68 equipped es45's with 1.25 and 1.0 ghz processors respectively.
LINPACK 1000 x 1000 6,847 (4 CPUs) 5,522 (4 CPUs)
Link to above
I work with large scale alpha clusters, and was just in maryland earlier last month learning how to support the itanium boxes so I looked a few things up while there.
Granted linkpack isn't the only benchmark, but the processor/memory and io bandwidth looks impressive from the specs I've seen. -

Re:What about software? - HP-UX is there
HP-UX 11i 1.0 runs on PA-RISC (uname -r returns 11.11).
HP-UX 1.5 and 1.6 run on ia64 (uname -r returns 11.20 and 11.21, IIRC).
So, its there already. And you can buy boxes running it today. -

Hmmm, perhaps they don't care about Alpha anymore? -

"Proprietary", eh? Guess what? All of the major formats are proprietary. Want to sell a CF device? You can if you ante up to the CF org. Sony has released quite a few specifications (http://www.memorystick.org/topics/eng/aboutms/for mat.html).
You might find prices on Amazon.com come close to CF or SD/MMC but I can walk into any camera shop and be offered compact flash cards by 3 or 4 manufactures where I'd be lucky if could find 2 for memory stick.
I count 6 manufacturers of Memory Stick: Lexar, SanDisk, Sony, I-O Data, Apacer Tech.

Maybe this time IBM will make money......
IBM has a long history of releasing open standards and not making money of it starting from "IBM-compatible PCs ". Then laptop standards and now this
....
Now by specifying PowerPC as the chip , which they own, maybe they will make actual money out of it...
Now HPQ, and last quarter Dell, sold the maximum number of "IBM comaptible PCs" in US. Even if this goes similarly IBM still can profit...Dell's current PDA uses Intel chips and Microsoft and HP uses Intel in iPAQ and Strongarm in Jornada. Dell being such a follower of "Industry Standards" ,might switch but lets see about HP -

We've been sneaking in Linux now for a few years..
All we had to do to get 'approval' was do proof-of-concepts. Now that HP Omniback (aka DataProtector) supports Liunx, SAP runs on Linux, and we can do 95% of our job on the desktop using Linux we are past the sneaking in. Linux is still a pain to configure due to the many flavors. I also wish tools/applications would install easier. We'd don't have DLL hell as much as we used too - now we have gcc hell!

Re:Do companies do research anymore?
What's happended to Bell Labs?
It got broken into a number of pieces, just as AT&T split up.
(is it somewhere in Lucent?)
The piece called Bell Labs did.
How about HP?
HP Labs still exists; whether they're doing less, or just doing stuff other than the commodity stuff HP's using more of, is another matter.
But, as has been noted, there are some research departments in big companies that are doing interesting stuff, such as IBM and even a favorite whipping boy on Slashdot. How pure the research of any given company is might be a different matter.

Not to worry
It appears they have a program in place to cost effectivly move the Alpha customers to the new Itanium systems when they come out.
They are calling it their Customer Assurance Initiative -
Re:linux?Speaking as someone who has in fact actually done it, yes, Linux will run on an EV7 Alpha system. If you'd like to try out an EV7 prototype system, we have one up in the HP Test Drive Program, where we give out free shell accounts on a wide range of hardware and operating systems. The EV7 prototype we have is running Tru64 UNIX at the moment, but we do periodically have Linux on there for people to try. We also have Itanium II systems running Linux, for anyone who would like to try them out as well.
I may work for HP, but that does not imply that my opinions are theirs.
-
Re:Intel is in trouble
The Itanium is a dud: systems based on it are hugely expensive, have iffy performance, and are not usefully x86 compatible.
Hugely expensive? You can get yourself a nice Itanium-2 workstation for less than you get get a 2x1.4G Opteron box
Iffy performance? Fastest SPECfp2000 result, bar none. Second fastest SPECint2000 result, clock-for-clock: only HP's awesome PA-8700 is ahead.
Not usefully x86 compatible? It's more than enough to run acroread. For everything else, you've got source, right? With over 90% of Debian packages available for IA64, and three free (as in beer) compilers for Itanium available to download, what's the problem with porting?
AMD aren't going to have a big winner on their hands. They're going to have another Athlon - enough to make an initial impression, that slowly fades into market oblivion over a few years as Intel take advantage of an inherently superior architecture while AMD are stuck trying to make their 64 bit extension of a 32 bit extension of a 16 bit extension to an 8 bit microprocessor go faster.
Do you think Intel are stupid, or something? -

Re:NEBS compliant hardware requiredI've used Sun carrier grade hardware, don't know of any Intel based. Does any exist?
Here is a list I compiled.
IBM
HP
Intel,
Crystal PC,
Force Computer,
RadiSYS
There are many many Intel server vendors but there
are only handful who makes NEBS compliant ones. -
HP class I took was great
I recently took a class from HP (it was HP-UX for experienced sysadmins) and it was a great class. There were only 8 people in the class, the teacher was very knowledgeable, and we were using modern equipment. We were learning for the sake of learning. No one was going to use NIS? Fine, we skipped that. If you want the exam prep, it was a totally different class.
Admittedly, this was just one class from one instructor, but the facilities should be at least comparable. There's one in the New York area. And, of course, you'd be learning something HP specific. Check out their web site for more info. -
Re:A brief history of alphas (and thier troubles)
This pdf document seems to support some of the comments you dismiss. " EV7 (21364 = (21264 core w/improvements + RAMBUS controller" - page 4 of the pdf file. "RAMBUS memory controller onboard the chip (256-bit dual channel, so it actually isn't a POS like many RAMBUS inmplentations" - pages 5-7. Etc. on the hardware. We know "Slot A was originally an Alpha slot" is true. From this German language web page (translated) "A 200 MHz system bus based on the protocol from alpha EV6 processor" supports "(additionally, MANY alpha engineers were hired by AMD when DEC was merging, and the EV6 bus (and many other tech goodies) were licenced to AMD" in the post about which you say "I don't think there is even one thing in his post that is correct."
I hate to call anyone a troll and some comments in the post might be wrong, but your credibility is pretty low (and yes, I did look at your scores and strong karma is not one of your strengths). -
Re:*BSD Vs. LinuxActually, that is the most recent version of Mandrake Linux for the Itanium. If you look through our previous news, you will also note that we have had Mandrake 9.0 available for quite a while as well - since September, if I recall correctly. The fact that Mandrake 9.0 is their latest release on the x86 platform does not imply the same for other platforms. If you would like to verify the most recent version number of Mandrake for any particular platform, may I suggest you try the news and download pages on their site.
I may work for HP, but I don't speak for them.
-
Re:*BSD Vs. LinuxFreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD are available for you to try out in the HP Test Drive Program. We also have several Linux distributions available for you to try, as well as HP-UX, Tru64 UNIX, and OpenVMS. Personally, I've found the *BSDs to be quite stable and easy to comprehend. Try them out for yourself in Test Drive and see what you think.
I may work for HP, but I don't speak for them.

Re:Desperate for silent machines
I have noticed over the range of Compaqs we have bought at work in the last year that they are getting quieter each round.
That's because they're saving all that noise for the servers... a Proliant DL380 (G3) sounds like a fscking jet takeing off until the OS is installed, and the power saving drivers kick the (up to 8)fans down. It's enough to give me a headache building them. And since I live in cubeville, no one in the 'cluster' can talk on the phone for ~2hrs because of the noise.
Of course, that's nothing like the Fujitsu systems I got to play with a couple years ago; one of their 3u servers had 21 fans, but didn't make nearly as much noise.

Re:Slightly Off Topic - Tablets Aren't Worthless
You should have followed the link I gave for the Compaq tablet. It has a detachable keyboard, so it is considered a dual form factor tablet. It can be used in Slate mode, or with the keyboard attached as an ultraportable laptop. When not necessary, the keyboard flips behind the screen out of the way, or detaches completely for a lighter tablet.
Here's an even better link :

Re:TRS80 Model 100
This may not be that old (c. '98), but the HP Jornada 820 is also a great portable terminal, although these are as tough as fingernails.

How does 3g fit into this ?
Apart from the title there is no mention of 3g in the article. Is the author actually looking for a 3g solution (in which case i can't help because 3g is not available in most of the world, including where i live) or was the 3g buzzword just thrown in for good measure ?
(note: the following info is gsm-only because that's all i'm familiar with)
Getting your mail via webmail can only be done if you have a phone that can surf the web like the nokia 9210i (gsm 900/1800 only, old, no gprs), siemens sx45 (again 900/1800 only, kinda old) or the sony ericsson P800 (which works on gsm 1900 and looks way better than the other two). Apart from the cellphone, make sure your gsm network provider supports gprs, because data transfers without it are more painful and more expensive.
If you only need pop3, all you need is a phone with a pop3/imap client (there tons available). Again make sure your network supports gprs.
Of course you could always get phone with decent data capabilities and a pda. If you really want to impress you friends, make sure they both have bluetooth. (bluetooth products: nokia hp/compaq Toshiba
