Re:Fearless Sun Leader pokes at IBM
IBM already has tons of projects to which it contributes to. http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/views/opens
o urce/projects.jsp Thats why we like IBM this year/month/week/day. That said I'm not blaming Sun either. -
Re:question?
You must have been out of the IT world for quite a while. IBM sells:
- intel servers (running linux or windows)
- AMD opteron servers (SUSE has an AMD64 port)
- power processor boxes (running AIX and linux)
A press release from 2000: SuSE delivers Enterprise Linux for IBM RS/6000 -
Re:How can we fracture it?
you do not distribute additional software intended to supersede any component(s) of the Redistributables
As long as Sun's Java is non-free, Debian and other distributions need the right to distribute replacements for the compiler, class libraries, and Java Virtual Machine. -
Re:Call me ignorant, but...
IBM was big on VX-REXX (from Watcom, I think) for a while, and I guess that's how they did the GUI.
Incidentally, there's also a mod_rexx for Apache, from IBM.

REXX, free from IBM
You can get the latest version of REXX, Object REXX, for FREE, for Linux, Windows, Solaris, and OS/2 (which comes with "classic" REXX, which you can update to Object REXX).
There's also NetREXX, which compiles to Java bytecode.
For open source fans, there's Regina Rexx, available for almost all platforms. Debian users can "apt-get install regina-rexx".
cheers. -
More details for those interested
Tried submitting this a couple of times since yesterday but the submission system seems to have picked up a few bugs of its own where it says "Thanks for the submission" but nothing shows up in the queue. Here are the details...
Yahoo, Hotmail Users Vulnerable to XSS PC Attack
Both Yahoo Web e-mail and Microsoft Hotmail are vulnerable to an Internet Explorer cross-site scripting (XSS) attack that lets malicious users run local code, according to Israel's GreyMagic security consultants (proof of concept). Possible consequences range from theft of login and password to a remote takeover of the compromised machine. Reports indicate that Microsoft has patched the hole but Yahoo has yet to solve the problem. The vulnerability presumably affects Windows PC-based versions of Internet Explorer only. Some people might want to read this developerWorks article on how to prevent cross-site scripting and protect oneself, mentioned last month on Slashdot. More coverage at InternetNews and The Register.

Re:Rational Unified Process
Robert C (Uncle Bob) Martin and others (even the RUP people - nowadays part of IBM, Rational - themselves) have argued that XP can be seen as a (lightweight) subset of RUP.
Martin wrote about XP vs RUP in 1998 (gg PDF-as-HTML). Martin calls/~ed it "dX" ("dX: A minimal RUP process"). Gary Pollice, former Rational 'Evangelist', have also explored RUP and XP common ground (gg PDF-as-HTML). Google for more. -
How about...
..some some 'Security through Obscurity'?
When was the last time an OS/2 WARP Server was rooted? When was the last time OS/2 had a virus?
Then again, when was the last time OS/2 WARP Server was available for purchase?
Damn. If only I still had a copy...

Re:Sure is!
with no info anywhere about what Rexx is.
You might have looked in the wrong places.
Why not try The REXX Home Page at IBM?
Or the Rexx Language Association home page? -
Fond meories of Rexx
Wow. This article brings back some fond memories.
You know you're a geek when the mention of a language from your past fills you with warm fuzzies.
Back in the old days (for me), when I was unable to get Unix for my PC, I went out and spent cash money on PC-DOS from IBM, just so I could get Rexx. The coolest part was that command.com had been tweaked by IBM such that the any
.bat file that started with a Rexx comment would be interpreted by Rexx when invoked (instead of the grungy batch language everyone else had).It was pure heaven to have a real language to script with under DOS.
Ironically, my company is slowly being encouraged by some of our potential customers to be more big-iron friendly. They want our new-fangled Java stuff, but the more we play nice near mainframes, the more pilot projects we win. I'm now able to use my mad COBOL and Rexx skillz for real.
Who knew?
-
Re:My Input
Actually, Object REXX is available for Linux no-charge (as is) here. I've been using it with MySQL to kludge up a home inventory, as well as a few data extraction scripts for a project at school. While I'm planning learning a more conventional scripting language for Linux, I still haven't found any that match the power of the PARSE... But I digress.
-
and of course NetRexx
NetRexx is just your normal Rexx, but it compiles into Java byte code:

No need to make jokes here, they already have an official mascot in the links above. Did you look at it? It's much more scary than the one you posted!

Re:Browsing with people is a pain
From Opera's press release and IBM's writeup, it looks like web pages have to be specially encoded with new X+V markups to enable this. My guess is that you have to tie each link to a specific voice command and an instructive icon (or soundbite) is displayed (played) with the link.
So more likely (and if the page is designed well), you'll see/hear stuff like "say 'specs'" to view the specs, say 'contacts' to view our contact information, ..." -
Re:i like my pc based gamesOne thing I hope changes is the console controller, the console controller hasn't (really) changed since the console was created, analog contol pads have gotten better and cheaper, but not much else. If someone comes out with a controller that is truely supperior, it could bring them a lot of business.
I'm a big fan of IBM's trackpoint technology, it blows away a trackpad, although I still perfer an oversized trackball. Integrating something like a trackpoint into a controller would make jumping a cursor across the screen possible.

Re:Same 12 reasons as last year?I think that the proof of Linux's expansion can be seen in fact that there are court cases against it (SCO). I'm not necessarily talking about the IBM and Novell cases though they do lend their support, but I speak more directly about the cases against Auto Zone as a Linux user as well as putting forth threats of legal action against government agencies, and thats just in the United States. Why would a company spend millions of dollars fighting legal battles against something that is not a threat.
Yes there are success stories, you may have heard of a small search engine called Google, though admittedly they are a company built on Linux, not one switching over. For a list of other success stories see IBM's website and yes it is true that some of these companies have only switched a portion of their computers to Linux, but I think you'll find that when any switch is being made it gets done a few computers at a time, I know of companies that do this even when upgrading their chosen OS ie. MS 2000 to MS XP.
When it comes to switching OS's two basic rules apply:
1. The switch will go much smoother if the technical knowledge base already exists in your company.
2. The larger number people the switch affects the larger the problem of switching. I think the latter in particular applies to the case of the German government, though their IT guys may be well have experience with Linux, it may not be on the scale that they are working on now, and when you add in the training that need to be done to get the large number of users up and running on Linux it starts to become clear that there will be extra unforeseen expenses and delays.
The company I work for just switched a large number of people over from using IBM's OS2 to using Mac OSX an OS know for being relativity user friendly and we have had many unforeseen setbacks, so this is not just a Linux thing, it can happen with Windows, Unix, BSD, even Mac.
Change may be a good thing in the long term but it can have severe short term effects and the challenge is to not let the short term disrupt business for longer than is necessary.

Re:Switch to what? They're all pathetic.I use a simple curses-based POP client to delete spam on my server before letting my GUI client get it.
This is the problem with Windows. There's hardly any command line mail clients. Pine used to be one, but now it's switched to a standard GUI-like app which won't run in the cmd.exe window. The only choices I can think of currently is to use Mutt, or curses-Pine through Cygwin. I've also found an IBM lotus client, but it requires registration. With all the email viruses on Windows, one would think that someone would create a nice, native text client.

2 thoughts: 1 for, 1 against
One thought is that I can see uses for this shape/size of device. I can see it as useful for the video display function for different stuff and as just a good shape for getting a device on your wrist (better than the other tries anyway). And, if you want it more descrete, wear it screen-down like some wear watches anyway...
The other is a gripe. If someone wants a display, why not make it a remote one for something with more power and keep it the size of a watch? make the watch a time-piece AND be able to use it for messages, alarms, etc. from a PDA or something else via bluetooth or maybe even PAN? -
Re:IBM
I have to disagree here. Especially in storage (look at IceCube as an example), there's all sorts of good things going on, and that have gone on in the past (like magnetic disks).

GNAA Press Releast:GNAA Press release:
GNAA claims responsibility for kidnap of Olsen Twins
By Gary Niger
Lindon, Utah - GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America) this afternoon announced one of their loyal members was responsible for kidnapping the twins inside a popular New York Club, Vudu Lounge (Websites).
In a shocking announcement this afternoon, GNAA representative rkz revealed that he was the mistery gunman who penetrated high-security defenses of the Vudu Lounge and injected viral gay nigger seed deep inside the Olsen Twins, was indeed a full-time GNAA member.
"This is serious," rkz began. This is a first event of such magnitude since GNAA opened its doors to new members in 1996. Until now, we were gathering new members by announcing our group information on a popular troll website, slashdot.org, but this is a whole new era. By injecting our holy gay nigger seed right into human females, we will be able to immediately collect thousands of members. "Make the most of the next six weeks," he added. "We will grow in numbers more than you can possibly imagine".
Insertion of the GNAA collecting penis into their tight little vaginas came right between the consideration of Justin Timberlake to buy out the entire early saturday morning disney entertainment show's cast, and will most likely positively affect the decision. By adding all the gay niggers working for Timberlake with the gay niggers developing Mac OS X kernel source, GNAA will be all-powerful and will begin plotting our next plans to penetrate "backdoors" into the next favorite teen pop star Kelly Osborne.

Whoo, karma to burn, boys!I think the US Navy in conjunction with Radio Shack should do a series comic books based on the adventures of Grace Hopper. Sort of like those "Electronics is Cool! No, Really!" comics they did in the 50's-80's. Here's some proposed titles:
- Grace Hopper : Girl Genius of Vassar
- Lt. Hopper of the U.S. Navy
- Grace Hopper and the Mystery of the Hollerith Code
- Grace Hopper Tames the MARK I
- Grace Hopper Defeats the NAZIs
- Grace Hopper vs the Pernicious Moth
- Grace Hopper Unravells Sputnik
- Grace Hopper vs the Commie Russians
- Grace Hopper Unleashes the Scourage of COBOL
- Grace Hopper Arm-Wrestles Hyman Rickover
- Cmdr. Grace Hopper : Recalled to Duty (special double issue)
- Cmdr. Grace Hopper Defeats the Commie Russians
- Grace Hopper CyberGrrrrrl
And remember, (+1, Funnay) does nothing for karma!

Imagine... a single Virtual machine spec...
Sun have a chance !
a Sun Virtual Machine ( SVM ) that has libs for java and can be targeted well by other langs
start with the JVM fix the Java memory model
(JSR 133, which has been active for nearly three years see article on fixing it and links at bottom located at )
let ADA and fortran target it well
(i.e. think about take floating point IEEE754 seriously but get it out there and tune later)
really not that hard look at Programming Languages for the Java Virtual Machine
Start with something you know well and adapt it
if it was refered to the ITU I bet they would love it and make it a standard !
regards

One more tutorial (karma whoring)
Lots of other comments, as well as the story, have pointed to a number of good tutorials and introductions. I'd like to recommend also the one I wrote for IBM developerWorks. I believe my tutorial is a bit better for real beginners to FP than are most of the others out there.
Anyway, you can find it at IBM dW(free registration required) or at my own Gnosis Software site.

Of course you shouldn't read that unless you also read the the rebuttal - apparently a lot of what is in Ross Andersons FAQ is flat out lies.

this just in!
IBM has had thinkpads containing TCPA chips for years! On top of that, they provide a Linux driver for it on their website!

Re:Where have I seen this before?
Obviously, you are an email admin, not a developer.
First... Notes is more than just email, in fact email is just a tiny part of it. Consider that the record-breaking websites for several Olympic Games were run on Notes/Domino. ("The Nagano Olympics and Wimbledon sites served record numbers of hits per day (630 million).")
Notes/Domino has been a model for incorporating standards into a development platform. They were one of the first to start using OLE/DDE over a decade ago and one of the first 4GLs to incorporate HTML and Java in the 90's. Right now, it has everything from XML/HTML/Java/J2EE to actually being an LDAP server when you want it to. Oh, and they don't implement these standards the way Microsoft does, they are actually very, very open. Which reminds me, they support Linux, OSS and there are even personal efforts on that front.
Oh, and I think you misrepresent what your article link states.... Notes is not 'hard to get rid of' because of thick clients, it's hard to get rid of such a valuable development platform.
p.s. Websphere Portal was moved UNDER the Lotus Software division, it's not dead, it's growing !
Please learn a bit more, then get back to me ;)

Oracle and DB2Did you know: If you're a developer you can get a free development license for Oracle and/or DB2.
This is really helpful if you want to play around or learn them, but you need to have a pretty big machine to put them on. Figure on 1GB RAM, 2GB swap and at least 20GB disk, just to play around with ONE of them. Then add in the size of the data you'll be working with...

There are American Companies that do this
IBM - look at everything done at the Almaden labs and just general research
JPL - technically not a gov't organization
Intel - Itanium
AMD - x86-64
There are plenty of examples where companies have and still are doing this. You don't hear about it because it hasn't made any money yet. You can however read about most of it if you know where to look. Microsoft, IBM, Intel, AMD, HP/Compaq are some of the largest research funders in the world. You don't have to look very far to find the money being spent in research which might or might not make money in the long run. -

Re:Why no high end workstations?Good question.
First of all, this is exactly what IBM is doing , targeting the high end of the spectrum. Particularly Linux on Mainframes and what not. There is a huge market in the corporate world for high end Linux computing, in part replacing Unix mainframes.
But also there are several vendors of High end Linux Workstations. Folks like ASL, PogoLinux, Micronux and the list goes on. Here the market niche is scientific/tech workstations, and yes, they are typically high end.
The market that is still not ripe for High end Linux workstations is the power gamer home PC, and this is the one probably holding WalMart, HP and others back on high end Linux PCs

Re:Warm heart
Somehow Transmeta will always have a warm place in my heart.
And Intel will always have a warm place in my lap.
Seriously, though.... The new IBM X40 is only 2.7 lbs with approximately the same battery life. The Transmeta only looks good until one realizes that it has a tiny 10" monitor. -
SWT and GCJI use WSAD, which is built on Eclipse. It's pretty darn impressive. The main goal was to provide a great development environment and I'd say they achieved that. Certainly there are other great IDEs (IntelliJ?). It's SWT, not Swing, and you can see the difference in apps that do use swing such as JEdit, Sun's NetBeans and Togethersoft's TogetherJ. Yes they are good, but when you use a product every day every little bit of speed, ease of use is important.
Also here's a good article on SWT and GCJ.

What a load of rubbish
Surprise, Microsoft releases
Sun produces Java for a whole bunch of platforms. So does IBM. .Net for Unix, and the entire effort is null and void. Your pride and joy is now a footnote, and a deprecated one at that.
Intel have a C compilers on a bunch of platforms. So does GNU (and Sun, and Microsoft).
Software doesn't suddenly become useless simply because another vendor releases a competing implentation on the same platform. If MS do release a .NET implementation for Linux then mono will still be valuable. Licencing terms will obviously be one area they compete on. No doubt there will be others. -
Sometimes it's a hobby...I read on a minor Japanese news site (here) a little while ago about a site that was running a Japanese translated ripoff of the US Yahoo. The site was just running the Yahoo site through a machine translator (excite's i think), and changing the references to Yahoo to Shimanto.
The news site interviewed the guy running the fake and asked him why he was doing it. Shimanto.com wasn't making him any money. Rather he was paying a fair bit for the hosting fees. Plus it could get him in a bunch of trouble.
He was just doing it for fun...
Apparently, the guy has a history of doing the same thing, as well as domain name squatting, things like that.
Right now the Yahoo fake is gone, but it's now ripping off IBM's news site.

Hard call.Of course the Sims isn't educational. I assume you're not letting them anywhere near the on-line service either; Google for Sims and Prostitution. I also think your definition of "simulation" looks a little narrow. Flight Simulator is more what I think of when you say simulation than The Sims, but I'm "old skool". It could even be considered educational. However, it is incredibly boring. Most of the other simulators, using the classic definition, focus either on racing (eg; Accolade's Test Drive series) or shooting things (eg; A10 Tank Killer -- anyone remember that?)
The more modern definition of "sim" that you seem to be using typically doesn't include anything of any redeming educational value. Most of the rules of the world are so simplified that behaviour within the sim is borderline random or very easy to effect by doing something seriously unrealistic. You'd get about as much educational value out of Monopoly as you would out of Railroad Tycoon. You could try looking at word and puzzle games. There's a "Wheel of Fortune game for the Mac, but I would imagine that a room full of kids would go through the library of puzzles pretty quickly.
My final suggestion might be a little out of your scope: Robocode or Corewars -- Kids develop their own little programs that battle it out in a virtual arena. The second is a little more abstract than the first. At the very least it will teach them how to program.
