Re:So tablets at PCs now?
Your iPad 2 passes every test, except for half the tests.
And so, what about that C-64. It doesn't pass at least 1, and possibly 2 (mouse) of the tests, either.
Yet I dare you to post on here that IT isn't a PC...
Yes, I know about the 1351 Commodore mouse, and the various PS/2 and serial mouse kludges for the C-64; but if you're going to throw that up in my face, I submit that is no more kludgy than THIS Bluetooth mouse driver for the (jailbroken) iPad.
And I GUARANTEE more software will work with the iPad's mouse than was ever written AT ALL for the C-64, mouse or no mouse.
So, I guess we're down to one (arbitrary) "criteria". User-upgradeability. And the C-64 already fails that one; so...
Again, PLEASE argue that the C-64 IS a "PC", and the iPad (or Android/Windows) tablets/smartphones are NOT.
I'll be waiting for you to now move the goalpost... -

1. Apple stock off 200 points.
2. Apple market share falling.

3. Apple's margins down.

Re:really conflicted on this
Apple is pissed off that everyone copied them. And everyone did. This is not in dispute. THIS REALLY HAPPENED.
Oooh, let me try!
-
Re:really conflicted on this
But Apple has misbehaved in exactly the same manner, for the same absurdly ridiculous details.
You can't just look at Apple v. Samsung as though the complaint was isolated. This is the way law works. If you steal bread and get caught, you'll get charged for stealing bread, sure... but you'll also get charged with breaking and entering, trespassing, walking on the wrong side of a highway, and anything else the prosecution can think up... maybe most won't stick, but we're not going to let you get away with stealing bread even if it means we're prosecuting you for wielding a deadly weapon (the bread). That's what you and everyone else that is hating on Apple is conveniently ignoring... that this is how the law has ALWAYS worked. Apple is pissed off that everyone copied them. And everyone did. This is not in dispute. THIS REALLY HAPPENED. It's not a case of "oh, well... that's how everyone's design would have trended even if Apple never existed" --- which, btw, has always been a bullshit argument. Apple's R&D is legendary. Apple, in strict secrecy, spent millions of dollars and years working on this "perfecting" the smart phone experience, and iPhone is the culmination of that effort. Then, 6 months after iPhone is released, behold! ALL SMARTPHONES LOOK LIKE IPHONE. Apple's complaint in Apple v. Samsung was about blatant copying... but Apple can't quite get the offender for the exact, precise crime... thus... they got Samsung on some bullshit... and Samsung deserved it (Apple gave Samsung many opportunities to make it right, and even Google was telling Samsung to back off the blatant near-counterfeiting of iPhone, but Samsung WANTED to copy the iPhone because they knew they might get away with it).
I say let Apple do as they wish. If they can protect their IP, then good for them. If they can't... then we're just going to have to get used to a long lasting trend of zero innovation... because what is the point of spending time and resources on innovation if another company can come along, reverse-engineer your innovation in a few months, and release a product that is superficially similar, and fool 1 in 5 (or better) of what should have been your customer into buying the knock off? None... no point in spending anything on innovating anything new... because you can't justify the cost, and the subsequent loss by copy theft.

Re:Huehuehuehue
The same site did a similar test with iOS browsers, and the performance results were very similar, which isn't exactly surprising since they all use the same back end.
Actually, 3rd party browsers will be slightly worse, since they can not access the Nitro Javascript engine, which is significantly faster.
Well, they can't unless you jailbreak it

Re:easy to license most of the patents
Those aren't the patents of concern. The problematic ones are those held by companies like Apple, that aren't essential but are rather pathetic and used as weapons against competitors. Let alone the hazards of patent trolls armed by companies like Microsoft, Apple, and IV.
most of these patent articles are just FUD and click bait
Which patent trolling firm do you work for?
So if the technology is 'pathetic' and 'non-essential', who cares? Just don't use it.
Apple is using all means necessary to stop KIRFs. Some of what Samsung has done is flat out pathetic, and if you do your research they deserve all punishment received.

Re:Uhh, phones != profit...
Now hopefully they actually write an app that uses Android properly instead of some stupid iOS port - I've seen so many that are hard to use on Android because of this.
Which version of Android would that be? Development often revolves around the least common denominator, which in Android's case is 2.2. In the real world ~15% of the market is still a significant figure. What new and useful features have been added since then? Are you aware of how many different implementations which are vendor specific, things like graphics, button functionality (interesting related blog post illustrating these points) which might hamper development? I know this isn't an end user concern but you're experiencing the symptoms of Android fragmentation. What version of Android are these handsets running? Take a look at the SDK usage and OS versions as of this month. Looks like Gingerbread, which is from December 2010, in handset terms that's nearly a generation or two.
At least with IOS you're dealing with pretty current hardware since Apple (love it or hate it) makes it a point to support only the last two releases, and over 2/3 of devices upgraded to the newest version within a month, wish it were the same for Andorid. -
Re:Apple has shown the way for Motorola.
This is surely simple; Apple is using Motorolas patents; if they will not accept the FRAND offered by Moto then a Judge will surely be willing to grant a injunction against sales and promotion of all infringing products. As apple themselves have shown, this need not take years.
Or do fanbois think that 'rounded corners' drawn by one of their case designers a few years back represents a more important piece of IP than the detailed algorithms controlling signalling in a congested radio band that took real scientists and engineers years of research and skill to develop?
I can't believe people actually think this garbage.
Apple does not have a patent on 'rounded corners'. They have a trade dress patent which is a collection of almost a dozen individual features that create the unique image of an iPhone. They do not have individual patents on each individual feature, but rather one trade dress patent to stop KIRFs.

Re:Actually...
So you can do this with your iPhone?
With a jailbroken iPhone, of course you can.
Can you customize the built in mail client on Android with 10 lines of code?
Customising an iPhone means buying a new case.
Yeah we also have more of those too.

Re:Data comm speed - guess LTW means nothing...
I'm surprised you didn't catch this. There HAS been a significant upgrade to the speakers and microphones in the iPhone 5 (and to top it off, Apple is working with carriers to improve audio quality during calls as well).
http://www.idownloadblog.com/2012/09/12/iphone-5-three-mics/ -
Re:False Comparison
You can turn off 3G/4G data in the settings if you want to match.
Actually for many, you can't. Carriers can disable the 3G toggle on the iPhone 4S. AT&T does so.

Re:WP7 Nokia 900 owner here.
I look forward to be being able to upgrade my iPhone 4S and iPad 3 to iOS 6 for "free" and later upgrading to iOS 7 next year again for "free".
You have that guarantee in writing, right?
Don't attack the messenger. I'm just asking because it seems that iOS 6 leaves out those original iPad owners. http://jaxov.com/2012/06/ios-6-features-compatibility-release-date-all-you-need-to-know/
I guess koolaid makes some people forget that existing generations of the iPhone are NOT always compatible with new iOS versions. Here is another story from way back in March 2011 to remind you http://www.idownloadblog.com/2011/03/05/ios-4-3-will-not-be-compatible-with-all-idevices/
People like myself prefer to be called early-adopters or hobbyists. Look into it.

Re:How is it even possible to innovate these days?
I realise your comment is limited, and I haven't read the whole claim, but doesn't the claim to any number of design choices sound ridiculous to you?
Apple owns the identity of the iPhone. You can articulate this identity by detailing a list of specific hardware and software choices that make the iPhone unique. Almost all smartphones are rectangular with rounded corners - and this by itself is completely innocent. Samsung made dozens of purposeful and willful choices to create a product that mimicked the iPhone in almost every way possible. This is not ridiculous whatsoever, and an entire jury agreed.
http://media.idownloadblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/samsung-vs.-apple-e1313955567548.jpg
This blatant copying should not be allowed. -
Re:What's really funny...
And the quantities of finished products has to be similar given high-end Samsung phones roughly equal sales of iPhones.
This includes their low end phones the quantities far exceed the iPhone.
The markup for Samsung when they're making the parts *and* the finished product has to be much higher than just making components for Apple.
The exact opposite. Apple while selling only 6% of the world phones takes home 75% of the world's profits from phones. Apple is amazing good at targeting the consumers that are mostly price insensitive. And because Apple is so profitable they are willing to pay the parts division a premium for the best parts while Samsung's own handset division needs to be cost sensitive.
Anyway Samsung's estimate for 2012 iPhone sales is $13b is sales and $2.2b in profits which is almost 1/2 their profits for the entire company for the year across all their product lines. Apple turned their display business from losses to profits.
Just to pick an example from outside of cell phones, my Retina Macbook pro has Samsung's terrific 450 mb / sec SSD controller. You won't find that controller on Samsung laptops.
Samsung would rather exit the phone business than lose Apple as a customer.

Hopefully Samsung's gig is up
because this is just ridiculous. I will no longer support any of their products - mobile or otherwise. Doesn't take much research to find how much Samsung blatantly rips off their competitors.

Re:Too bad no one will get it
This is the most ridiculous claim I read everywhere regarding iPhones: the fact that even the 3GS still gets updates without cerains parts. You want to know what 'certain parts' are?
Pretty much every fucking thing that matters. Check here.
I own a 4S and an iPad 2 and I'm pretty sure next year I'll already see some stuff not being released to the 4S - hell, even the iPad 2 don't get FaceTime over celullar (yeah, a lot of technical reasons you know...)
Please stop saying that even the 3GS gets upgrades. At most it gets security updates which I agree it's good, but upgrades? No fucking way.
Yes, that's the point of the "non-premium" option - some of the new whizz bang cool stuff won't be included, but you're getting it for free on contract. What do you expect? That it has all the same features as the 4S (and whatever the new one gets)? It's a discounted, more-budget-friendly, less-feature-rich phone.
It *does* get updates though - iOS6 does add some new features and improves old ones that the 3GS *will* get the benefit from (as well as all the security updates etc). Just because it doesn't get all the same stuff as the top of the line premium phones doesn't mean that there's "no fucking way" it is being upgraded when iOS6 rolls around (or when iOS5 hit, or iOS4).

Re:The rest of the world does not care
Well - pity for those in the US, they wont get the new stuff now...
Fortunately the rest of the world can enjoy all those things that are forbidden in the US. Seems the US is no longer the place to get your new stuff.
Now I am the last one to say anything about the quality or something, but at least the rest of the rest of the world has a free choice. The same issues Google/Samsung/Motorola ran afoul off in the USA are also being brought up before governments all over the world.
Google/Motorola is preparing for a major hit where it hurts.
Could you loose your ability to speak if you have been screaming in pain and anger at adverse developments rapidly revealing themselves as you prepare to celebrate your accomplishments?
The blow to Google Android Motorola was prompted by six key congressmen who visited the FTC on Thursday and told them FRAND ABUSE as practiced by Google in protecting Android would not be tolerated as it was anti competitive. In effect they told the FTC to step up their game as they were now watching what transpires.
Overseas the EU is investigating the same FRAND ABUSE issues and is preparing to smack down Google/Motorola for the same reasons. The FTC just provided documents to the EU to help the EU build their case.

Re:MAD
Unfortunately for you your apologism is trivially blown out of the water by the fact that Samsung couldn't help themselves and even copied the design of the charger. Only changing the colour. If you're saying that's the only way a charger can be reasonably designed, you're insane.

Of course
Of course we need Steve Jobs to tell us what we need, the consumers can't choose for themselves based on the choices in the market which is always bad. We need only one or two form factors.
These two should be banned from the market by fiat. for not conforming to Jobs' dictates and taste It's not like anyone would find it right for themselves right?

Re:Boycotts
I can understand the hate, I was like that in my early 20s, then I grew up. Apple isn't doing anything against Linux, nor even targeting the "Linux phones" as the article claims. They are targeting a subset of a very particular implementation of a Linux-based system on a few smartphones, for being a blatant copycat of their interface, not for running Linux, and in my opinion they are perfectly entitled to do so. If this boycott doesn't move people like me, it won't move anyone.
> The trick is to get other corporations to join the boycott. When advertisers started to pull their ads from the News Of The World it was forced to shut down pretty much instantly. If say Google decided to pull it's apps, YouTube iOS support and all other iOS tailored web sites we might see some results. Or how about Visa refusing to process Apple payments? We can only dream of course.
That would be a huge shot in the foot for Google and anyone else who profits from advertisement, considering that they have recently admitted that 2/3 of their mobile hits come from iOS devices. Furthermore it would be seen as monopolistic behavior in a time when Google is already trying to avoid being accused of anti-competitive practices in the advertisement market. It would actually be hilarious of Google pulled such a stunt.

Re:Hey, buddy.
Have you ever even looked at the evidence against Samsung? I'm guessing not since you posted Anonymous. They copied the design, the icons, the packaging, even the power adapter is identical. This isn't some 'vague look and feel', but pretty much straight clone. It is an obvious attempt to cash in on customer confusion.

Re:Not allowed to look closely?
Not when the Samsung is a copy of the iPad, no. That's the point.
If you took ANY pre-iPad tablet and tried to tell the difference, it would be simple.
http://www.idownloadblog.com/2011/08/19/tablets-before-after-ipad/
Case proved. Now why is Samsung wasting everyone's time in court?
