Re:"Yeah, those suspicious e-lectronics".you can build a device that looks NEARLY EXACTLY like this one which will easy build up enough voltage to set off a small detonation cap.[...]
All you need is a fistfull of explosive putty with small detonation cap embedded in it and to ground the high voltage lead through the detonation cap onece the charge has built up. And you could put that device in a stuffed animal.
Why not point guns at people with stuffed animals, since they too COULD be bombs? -
Intel roadmap explained
Here's an old image which shows Intel's current roadmap: http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/5313/1775largelongtermroadmap7fs.png
Basically, intel releases a new architecture every 2 years and in between that they release a die shrink/derivative.
Penryn is mainly just a die shrink of Merom (codename for the laptop version of the Core 2). Merom was a 65nm chip and Penrym is a 45nm chip using the same architecture. Next they will release a new architecture using 45nm (codename Nehalem), then they will release a die shrink of Nehalem using 32nm, and so on and so forth...
Here's a quick rundown:
2006: Core 2 architecture released at 65nm
2007: Die shrink of the Core 2 architecture from 65nm to 45nm
2008: New architecture (code name Nehalem) released at 45nm
2009: Die shrink of the Nehalem architecture from 45nm to 32nm
2010: New architecture (code name Sandy Bridge, formerly known as Gesher) released at 32nm
2011: Die shrink of the Sandy Bridge architecture from 32nm to 22nm -

Re:Article is very misleading - JS benchmark only
Well, that is an interesting claim, but isn't corrobrated by my experience. To wit:
Opera 9.5 alpha
Safari 3 alpha?(beta?)
And that observation is borne out by casual comparisons between the browsers. Safari feels dog slow on Windows, quite contrary to Apple's bogus benchmarks. -

OUP wants me to pay for my own Open Access article
I have been dismayed (previous post: "Open Access") at the lack of commitment to OA by mainstream (primarily toll-access (TA)) publishers and have described this as a "systemic failure" of the industry. Here is another unacceptable lack of clarity and commitment from an Open Access journal from a major publisher. I had been investigating OUP's site for another reason (PRISM: Open Letter to Oxford University Press) and since I had published with them thought I would have a look at papers I had written ("I" and "my" include co-authors). This is what I found (screenshot):
The Image in the blog entry stating $48 cost
The electronic article is accompanied by a sidebar with "request permissions". I followed this and the result is shown above. The journal wishes to charge me 48 USD to:
* USE MY OWN ARTICLE
* ON WHICH I HOLD COPYRIGHT
* FOR NON-COMMERCIAL PURPOSES (TEACHING)
The journal is therefore
* SELLING MY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
* WITHOUT MY PERMISSION
* AGAINST THE TERMS OF THE LICENCE (NO COMMERCIAL USE)
I am lost for words... ... the only charitable conclusion I can draw is that the publisher ritually attaches the awful Rightslink page to every article automatically and that this is a genuine mistake. I have found such "genuine mistakes" with other publishers in their hybrid journals (i.e. where only some of the papers are OA, the majority being toll-access TA). But this is a fully OA journal - all papers are OA - I assume CC-NC. There is no excuse for including the Rightslink page on ANY OA paper, let alone every one on a journal.
If this is - as I desperately hope - a genuine mistake then my criticism might seem harsh. But it is actually part of the systemic failure of the industry to promote Open Access. And I hope that OUP can and will clarify and rectify the position. If, however, it is deliberate and that the publisher actually intends to charge readers and users for Open Access articles I shall reserve comment.
This is not a trivial point. The normal reader of a journal who wishes to re-use material has to navigate copyright constraints and restrictions on an all-too-frequent basis. Such a reader, especially if they were relatively unaware of Open Access could easily pay the journal for "permission to use an Open Access article for teaching". (Note that other charges are higher - to include my own article in a book I write would cost nearly 350 USD).
It is all indicative of an industry that simply isn't trying hard enough.
RECOMMENDATION:
OPEN ACCESS ARTICLES ON PUBLISHERS' WEB PAGES SHOULD NEVER BE ACCOMPANIED BY RIGHTSLINK OR OTHER PERMISSION MATERIAL. INSTEAD THE PUBLISHER SHOULD PRO-ACTIVELY POINT OUT THE NATURE OF OA AND ENSURE THAT THE READER AND RE-USER IS FULLY AWARE OF THEIR RIGHTS.
After all, the author has paid for this...

Re:Did you notice?
Sorry for replying to myself (why is that a bad thing considering it's impossible to edit a post?), but I just couldn't resist making an animated gif of the dude. Only seven frames and one of them seems to be a little off (too bright perhaps), but everyone's free to mess with it.

Correct Image Link to Cartoon
The Sunday cartoonist "Opus" is no conservative but he has just let himself go enough to joke a little about Islam. Bad move! A lot of papers that normally take it will not run this Sunday's cartoon. I have reproduced it above.
I dislike censorship, so if you want offensive cartoons on this subject, visit 7chan, gaia online etc., (but not 4ailchan due to moderation). Or turn off image filtering and look on the second page of Married to Children. Some cartoons were inspired by a Fark.com photoshop contest, but I can't find it.
There is a full-size version [1] here
As you can see, it is not in fact laughing at Islam. It is laughing at his fellow Berkeleyites, if anything. - Stop The ACLU blog
Please mod parent "over-rated" to hide it and mod this correct version up, if you wish. -

Re:blackboxsearch broken or overreaching?
Yes, I have used Scroogle in the past. The thing I liked about BlackBox is that it retains the Google look and feel when providing results. Here is a screenshot of the first page of results for "compiz-fusion". It should simply act like Google's search results, but the issue with the subsequent pages of results remains.
Anyway, thanks for the link. There is a search plugin available for Scroogle Scraper on Mycroft, too. -
Good idea
This sounds like a good idea.
I personally work on a digital hologram printer, and wouldn't mind recording a short video describing how it works etc.
Here's an example hologram that I've done: (Yes, I'm a KDE developer as well. It's the KDE dragon, konqi.)

Re:CerialIf Global Warming has increased the earths tempature from
.3-.6 C then a .15C IS a big deal. You're comparing apples to oranges (global temperature to U.S. temperatures). 0.15 C in the U.S. is not a big deal to the global picture, since the affect on global temperatures is about 50 times smaller.
It actually isn't that big of a deal to U.S. temperatures, either (here is a before-after graph of the change), although it is noticeable. It's really only a big deal for trends in specific regions of the U.S. -
