I read it in a magazine before Matrix Reloaded came out, but it was mentioned on the DVDs as well. They planned to film the sequence on the 101 in California, but had to construct a stretch of freeway of their own to do the filming as I understand it.
IMDB will also let you know where various parts of a film are filmed.

Yes, the Dutch police.
"Hallo dere! It's me Captain Stefan Van Der Haast Graacht of the Amsterdam Police again. Viz my partner - and also, I'm very happy to say, my lover

Is this the real world, or the Matrix? :pWait, what?
Are we now going to be held criminally liable for what we might do?
Did I wake up this morning in Minority Report?
Are they also saying, then, that since the version of PING that comes distributed with, say, Fedora Core or Redhat is a DoS tool and therefore illegal to own, simply because you could use many copies of it spread out over many computers, run with maximum message size, no delay, and running ad infinitum? Or that if I happen to have tools in my garage that could be used to break into someone's house, that it's the same as actually committing breaking and entering?
Oh, wait! I have the math and physics skills to determine critical mass! I must be teh terr0ri$t! Everybody panic!
What's next, then? If you have a Bittorrent client that you use only to download completely legal files (like, say, Fedora Core) that by association, Fedora Core must be illegal because you use an "illegal" piece of software to download it?
I'm being a little rediculous -- but only a little. This is exactly the sort of mentality I'm coming to expect these days.

Indeed, "Eigth Man" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0127373/would be far more cromulent. -
Potential Cameras
agreed
.. digging at the imdb entry for Speed Racer reveals the Sony F-23 which was unveiled last year with a japanese spec sheet here. The only major camera innovation i've seen in hollywood recently is the 3ality stuff who have probably upgraded their rig to use the latest Sony CineAlti. Done correctly you should have multiple images layered like the old disney cartoon/cell techniques to give an almost 3-D effect on a layered screen without the need for 3-D glasses .. (it looks pretty cool if you've ever seen it) .. but if you don't know what you're looking at i could see where someone just says that it just looks like it's all in focus due the crispness of the image that better reflects what we can naturally see than a typically transposed camera shot -
Re:Focus is a tool
Actually, I thought Waking Life was rotoscoped, like A Scanner Darkly, and rotoscoping is a very old technique. It may have been sped up through the aid of computers, but rotoscoping was invented in the 30's if I recall.

Gran Sasso
Borexino is really an amazing detector, but has a complex history. The experiment is located at an impressive place called the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) in Italy. Technically, it is one of the deepest labs in the world as measured by overburdon -- i.e. it has about a kilometer of rock in every direction to shield cosmic rays-- but is actually located high up in the mountains. Interestingly, it is almost directly under where Mussolini was held prisoner and subsequently rescued by German commandos at Campo Imperatore in 1943. It is also near where the movie Ladyhawke was filmed. Anyway, back in 2002 there was a chemical accident when some of the liquid scintillator material (highly toxic) got into the local ground water. The leak was an honest mistake and was actually rather minor as chemical spills go, but it caused a public relations debacle which tangled up the lab and, in particular, Borexino, in a long bureaucratic nightmare. I'm happy to see they are now back in the game producing cutting-edge results.

Re:Focus is a tool
I really don't understand all the skepticism I'm seeing in these comments. At this point, we don't know very much about the specifics of their new technique, except some very few comments from Susan Sarandon, who seems kind of flaky in the interview transcript. Computers are powerful enough now that we can do some mighty impressive things in post-processing. For instance, the movie Waking Life in which each frame was post-processed to give it a hand-drawn look (among other effects).
Of course, it could still be a total bomb, but these kinds of techniques should be encouraged because they expand the medium of film.

Emile Hirsch ... Speed
Susan Sarandon ... Mom Racer
Matthew Fox ... Racer X
John Goodman ... Pops Racer -
Stereotypes are funny.
There were more "offensive" things about muslims (and rednecks) in the first couple of minutes of the first episode of "Little Mosque on the Prairie" that this particular cartoon.
One unintentially hilarious thing that happened after the airing were the people expressing outrage at how non-muslims were depicted as dumb rednecks. Good stuff. -
GNAA annouces death of high-ranking wikipedo adminGNAA annouces death of high-ranking wikipedo admin's wife, hair
Caulfield (GNAP) - Vancouver, British ColumbiaGNAA operatives stormed the home of Wikipedia admin and registered NAMBLA member Ryan Bushby today, brutally murdering his Kenyan AIDS sex slave and cutting his lice-ridden hippy hair. Upon egress from the tar paper and plywood shack, GNAA encountered two other wikipedia admins armed with HH-1488 "Drilldo" anti-aircraft dongs, who then shot down the extraction roflcopter. This forced the GNAA to retreat and set up a defensive perimeter around the crash site. They would remain there sodomizing a large group of Jimbo Wales' militia forces until the early morning, when a rescue convoy led by Hans Reiser would finally reach them. Despite heavy losses on the part of the GNAA, the operation was deemed a success. As GNAA leader timecop observed shortly after the raid, "lol aids." Bushby was unable to be reached for comment, as he was too busy thinking up new ways to let him sit on his ass and smoke weed all day.

About Minneh Bushby:
Minneh is a Nigger from Africa. Whilst in Africa working as a street hooker, she acquired AIDS, and saw her family die in a refugee camp raided by a gang of rival Niggers. Re:fans DON'T think the music is no good
I have objective standards by which I judge music. Strong melodic lines (and by "strong" I mean "with consistent application of music theory", attention to the center of pitch, good vocal support, complexity, a large amount of variation in frequency, and novelty are the things I value in music. Basically, I want my music to be made by people incredibly proficient musicians, and no amount of style, feel, or groove is going to replace that.
Holy shit, please tell me you're just making a reference to The Dead Poets Society?Music that doesn't make you move, doesn't chill you to your core, give you goosebumps, wake your soul, send you to another level of consciousness... it's not music. It might be music to someone else, but... if you're sitting around "objectively judging" music, that "music" you're listening to isn't doing a thing for you. Keep searching... I sincerely hope you find some piece or artist that truly moves you. I don't know what kind of person I'd be if I hadn't.

Re:Tracing Of Users?
I vaguely remember something about it having to mix with the common garbage before it becomes fair game (though that could just be from a movie...).
You did indeed see it in a 1983 movie starring Michael Douglas. Wait a few years and you can see the new, improved version.

Re:So what you're telling me...
Having read all the Oz books as a kid I was thrilled to see a more accurate, darker picture of the land of Oz after the more saccharine MGM version. I guess I should check out 'Wicked' for the same reason
You might enjoy Snow White: A Tale of Terror http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119227/ with Sigourney Weaver playing the evil stepmother. I felt it lived up to its name quite well. -
American McGee
American McGee is supposed to be doing a film version of his video game American McGee's Alice.
There is some info about it here.
How will these versions compare? American's was very dark and twisted, with Alice emotionally disturbed and borderline insane. Characters were murdered and gruesome experiments were performed on the inhabitants of Wonderland. -

Re:Rather than suing...
This crazy guy poured his crazy little heart and crazy little soul into this crazy little book and some reasonably respected scientist craps all over it for modest crime of it being terrible. The author is upset about that and wants to punish the reviewer for making him look bad and costing him book sales.
I'm not sure what the best way to handle this situation is since I think scientists have a small but real obligation to expose ridiculous pseudoscience like this. As for the legal mumbo jumbo, my first thought is that counter-suing for something like being brought to court in bad faith is the way to go but establishing intent is very difficult. On a side note I'd have really liked to see more physicists work this piece of crap over more throughly in public. -

You know, that movie is not exactly bleeding edge these days - it's entirely conceivable that there are some child prodigy geeks on Slashdot who were born after it was released.
When I was a teenager, I don't think there were very many movie dialogues, from movies made before I was born [or even made when I was a young child], which I would have recognized. Maybe "The Wizard of Oz", but that's about it. Didn't really get exposed to things like "Casablanca" or "Citizen Kane" until college [or even graduate school], and I only learned e.g. "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" much more recently.
Heck, I don't think I saw "The Godfather" until a few years ago.
Jules: We should have shotguns for this kind of deal.
Vincent: How many up there?
Jules: Three or four.
Vincent: That's countin' our guy?

Vincent: So that means there could be up to five guys up there?
Jules: It's possible.
Vincent: We should have fuckin' shotguns.

Same here, but ... [spoilers of demo]
Very nice game indeed, but I am not going to get the full game...
I also got to play it tonight (I actually had free time and not in crunch mode?) for about 40 minutes (yes, it is short). The previews, screen shots, video clips, and trailers didn't excite me for this game. I kept hearing and reading very high scores from Xbox 360 port (demo and the full game that was sold earlier). Everyone was raving how scary, addicting, and pretty the game was. Now, I know why. The audio, graphic, special effects, etc. were very nice.
POSSIBLE SPOILERS: This 3D surrealistic first perspective shooter (FPS) game and story theme was an issue for me since it didn't hit me to excite me. It takes place in 1960 in an underwater city (it reminds me of Atlantis, Titanic, Blade Runner movie, etc.). The demo started out with an introduction that reminded me of Lost's Oceanic Flight 815 jetliner crash in the sea/ocean, but at night time. Wow, looking at the water was LOVELY and seeing the water splashes and droplets on my screen! While swimming to the lighthouse near by, I heard the flames, explosions, me coughing out water and breathing, etc.
The fun start begins in the lighthouse when I travel down to the underwater city named Rupture. At the same time, I met a guy helping me over the radio. You can hack robots to be on your side and protect you, security cameras, sentry guns, etc. There are various life spawn spots if you die. If you played System Shock 2, then you would recognize that this is the same people who worked on this game. The whole game system is based on it, but on a different game engine. The game still had scary parts, beautiful graphics and effects, objectives/missions, etc. It also reminded me of American McGee's Alice 3D FPS game for the surrealism and weirdness.
Check out the game if you have a decent gaming system or a Xbox 360 (heard it was good on the console as well and there's a free demo). Enjoy the graphics, special effects (check out those neat water falls, leaks, etc.), cutscenes, sounds, music, and horror. I was surprised it ran well on my not super fast system even without the beta NVIDIA driver that is supposed to be supported for this game.
Circuit City weekly ad/advertisement shows it for $39.99 for this week. So one extra copy for you to buy since I am not buying it due to above reasons and lack of free time (got other games to play and finish). If it was a sequel to System Shock 2 game, then I would be all over it just for SHODAN (I miss her harassing me like saying "Look at you, hacker: a pathetic creature of meat and bone, panting and sweating as you run through my corridors. How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine?")! -

The first thing I thought of in terms of MTV & Movies was Joe's Apartment but Alas it's not on that list. For whatever reason it's listed under MTV Networks. The simplest, most versatile way
Since he's asking for technological ideas, obviously the no-brainers, like pencil/paper, whiteboard, waxboard, etc.. are beyond her current mobility. A morse code key - a straight key connected to an oscillator is a simple and easily-grasped idea. While I love the idea of setting her up an FT-817 and a window-mounted antenna so she can just talk to everyone, teaching the code to someody in that condition is unlikely. The moment the key and oscillator is hooked up, she's up to Christopher Pike-level communication - one for yes, two for no. Add in long pulses to bring attention to start the yes-no guessing game. With that key as an outlet for communication, she'd immediately be able to pick up a few key characters - The numbers, "U" and "D" for up and down, "L" and "R" for left and right, and "I" for the itches she'd need u,d,l,&r for, initials of other frequent needs, favorite foods, etc.. If she's in for very long, you can elaborate - phone and/or internet connection, whatever. A lever switch , a AA cell and holder, some wire, and a tiny peizo buzzer from radio shack - maybe an spdt switch and a panel bulb for silent comms, and possibly a small piece of wood to mount at lest the switch on, 3 minutes with your soldering iron, and her mind is free. If she's got motor control issues, you'd have to obtain or create a suitable actuator - something as simple as an extension to the lever switch to make it easier to hit, to making a separate spring-loaded switch to keep her from actuating it unintentionally.

Re:No Child Left Behind doesn't matter
We, on the other hand, do not. Culturally, Americans view intellectualism with suspicion.
I can back this up to the lowest level. My nephew is a very smart kid (as much as my sister and I disagree on some things, she's done something correct in raising him - I digress).
At a recent family gathering, we were discussing a PBS Nova episode (my nephew and the rest of the family) and he got upset when we showed how impressed we were with his "smarts". After digging deeper, he revealed that he was recently rejected from a group of children on the playground because he "is too smart".
The kid is 9 years old and his peers are already persecuting his intellect.
I never realized the difference in Japanese culture until you just pointed it out. I'm thinking of Goonies at this point (the Asian kid-inventor - "boody trap!").
Posting anonymously because I don't want my sister to find out that I ever said anything nice about her (maybe 'nother story altogether?). -
Re:I disagree.
If you want to know what a society without copyright would look like, you should look at the countries where piract is rampant (95%+), like Thailand or China (off the top of my head). Do these countries still produce music and movies? They do, but I'm not sure how well they'd compete with the products of equally wealthy countries who value copyright.
Oh, and Ong Bak is one of the greatest martial arts movies ever made. -
Re:I can see the benefits to this technology
Yes, obviously rape victims should accept this fact and get on with life.
We're not saying "get over it", but it really can't be healthy to just be able to wipe out anything painful in your life any time you like.
Some people would probably end up blanking out huge portions of their lives. You might also lose the ability to make smart choices. If you wiped your memory, you might not know to be cautious in certain situations (or not not trust specific people). As shitty as they can be, your experiences are what you learn from. (Yeah, I know, I sound like Kirk.) Just blanking them out can't be any more healthy than having to live with them.
Watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind some time. Yes, it's fiction, but it does try to look at the consequences of being able to do such things.
And for me (though I could be just paranoid about such things) I'm not really willing to let someone muck about in my brain unless it's for life-saving purposes. I'd rather deal with whatever reality throws me than let someone fuck around with my neurons. They're gonna need a couple of decades to give me any confidence in this procedure -- wipe out enough neurons, and you spend your days with colouring books and drooling on yourself.
There might be some cases where this might be a treatment of last resort. But, I think there's a fairly high threshold of acceptability/safety which needs to be addressed.
Cheers -
